Just fixed a bug in newly added charts showing annualized deviation of excess deaths by select disease categories.

The "deaths since 2019" figures in legend were populated with inflated values. Math error.

Charts using only annual data weren't effected.

Interesting #dataviz exercise. Can this chart be remade effectively without using dual y axes? I initially misread the (non)significance of the relative bar/bullet sizes, but my efforts also have drawbacks.

1. scatter plot with radial ratio grid lines
2. variable width bars
3. dual bar charts

Some 62 (+1) counties ≥ 100% capacity per HHS data.

Map: Adult Hospital & ICU Capacity by County
Data: U.S. Dept of Health & Human Services, American National Standards Institute
Updated: May 25, 2023

Shows a color scale of 7-day average adult inpatient beds occupied over 7-day average adult inpatient beds staffed for 48 contiguous states only. Scale runs from black (well over 140%), to purple (120%), to red (80%), to orange (50%), to yellow (10%). Counties for which no hospitals/beds are reported are represented by colored hatch marks, reflecting state-level reported capacity.

Patterns of black circles represent counties where adult ICUs are near full; circles are dotted where adult ICUs are entirely full. Sparse grey dots show areas where no ICU beds are reported.

Most of the map is dark purple-orange, with splotches of lighter orange-yellow in the interior, mostly in the Rockies and lower Midwest. Black indicators heavily pepper the map.

Striking drop in annual growth of GDP per capita from 2019 to 2020 💸

A series of #dataviz|es as alternatives to two choropleth maps, comparing the trends per year as shared by Max Roser (OurWorldInData).

2️⃣ Slope graphs per country as tile grid map showing trends for each of the 186 countries featured.

🛠️ #rstats + #ggplot, in combination with the #geofacet ️📦 and #Figma to add the "how to" section + continent labels

A geofacet (a tile grid map that represents the [most] countries of the world as equally sized rectangles, mimicking the original geographic topology as closely as possible) with colored slope charts for each country. The world map is overall very red highlighting that "average income has decreased in almost all countries from 2019 to 2020, with GDP per capita growth turning from positive to negative in most cases".

Each rectangle (slope chart) features a country code and continent labels are added to help to distinguish the original spatial shape. A "how to interpret the slope chart" box showcases how to read the chart by using the trend for Great Britain, summarizing that: "From 2019 to 2020, the annual growth of GDP per capita of Great Britain has decreased by approx. 10 percentage points, turning from positive to negative."

1⃣ Slope graph showing trends for 196 countries, overall and split per continent

🛠️ #rstats + #ggplot2, using the new #ggblend 📦

A large slope graph (upper row) and five small multiples showing annual change in GDP per capita in percent (~income) overall and splitted by continent. The title reads "Average income has decreased in 185 countries from 2019 to 2020, with GDP per capita growth turning negative in 72% of these cases".

Boxplots placed to both sides show the overall distribution per year, color indicates the difference (percentage points) ranging from red (negative) to blue (positive). Small horizontal bars using the same color encoding placed below the slope charts summarize the trends. Overall, only 11 out of 196 countries show a positive trend.

Pediatric staffing never recovered to pre-omicron levels. Rather, one in five pediatric beds reported last May: now missing.

PICU Capacity Level (not shown): 69%.

Weekly average ~50 PICU beds were covid patients.

We're failing our kids. The emergency is over.

Chart: Pediatric Capacity: United States

Stacked area chart of daily 7-day averages for pediatric Unoccupied Beds, Non-Covid Beds, and Acute Covid Beds, for the period from August 2020 through May 23, 2023. Hash marks—indicating PICU beds—overlay bottom of each stacked area.

Dotted lines indicate historical and current Hospitals Surveyed (83%), Hospital Capacity Level (67%) and Critical Staffing Level (11%). First has fallen off as psychiatric and rehabilitation hospitals have gone to once-annual reporting; second is the ratio of total occupied pediatric beds to total staffed pediatric beds, nationally; last the ratio of hospitals with pediatric beds reporting critical staffing shortages as a share of those that answered said question either 'yes' or 'no'.

Capacity was climbing toward 55K, with climbing occupancy, before plummeting to under 10K in Jan '22. Feb '22 saw gain toward 45K; above in May, before trending down to now well below 40K.

Tried to recreate the chart by the Guardian on Press Freedom in the World in @observablehq
It's not perfect but learned some new things.

{sgplot} is an #rstats 📦 "for creating accessible plots in the Scottish Government. Currently, functions are available for styling #ggplot2 plots.

"The package has been developed using the Government Analysis Function Data Visualisation guidance for charts and colours."

Grouped bar chart titled "Living longer: Difference in life expectancy, 1967 - 2007" for Belgium, France, Ireland, and the UK. Source: Gapminder
stacked_bar_data <-
  gapminder |>
  filter(year == 2007) |>

                    breaks = c(0, 75, Inf),

There is an arrow pointing to the theme_sg(legend = "bottom") line

The New York Times is known for their groundbreaking #dataviz but what I really admire is how they have refined the basics to an exquisite level.

Look at this simple bar #chart:

- Category labels in bars
- Dual tints in each bar
- Bold text for the two leaders
- Right alignment of values and their title
- Elegant fine horizontal lines
- Enlightening annotation
- Medium grey for source

So clear yet few achieve this level of polish.

"The AR-15 semi-automatic rifle is one of the most popular guns in the U.S., and one of the most reviled.

It is an emblem of America’s political divisions, beloved by firearm enthusiasts for its versatility and cachet and targeted for bans by gun control advocates who blame it for a rise in mass shootings."

#DataViz #guns https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/ar-15-rifle-mass-shootings-semiautomatic-weapon-rcna84193

A chart showing which types of guns were used in what percentage of mass shootings since 2006. Mass shootings were used in 88%, rifles (excluding semi-automatic rifles) used in 16%, shotguns used in 15% and semi-automatic rifles, including AR-15s, 12%. Atop the chart is the text “Numbers do not add up to 100% because shooters may have used multiple types of guns.”

Over the past few months I wrote a series of tutorials covering the use of the pipedream.com platform to:

- make creative bots that post random images
- make data visualizations
- automate your Mastodon profile
- turn an email subscription into an automated feed

Altair 5.0 is out! 🎉

Vega-Altair (Altair for short) is a statistical visualization library for Python built on top of the Vega-Lite declarative grammar.

This version introduces selection parameters and variable parameters, experimental support for the DataFrame Interchange Protocol (hence compatibility with Polars!), and much more.

You can install it with `pip install "altair==5.0.0"`

And read the complete release notes at https://github.com/altair-viz/altair/releases/tag/v5.0.0
