#debian
Also, as much as I appreciate some of its tradeoffs, I won't really miss #RHEL if I end up someplace that uses eg the #Debian #Linux family, or idk, Alpine?
I legit miss my last technically-just-a-dev role back in 2005-2007, where we ran #Gentoo. I suppose the modern equivalent would be a place that deploys #NixOS to production? 🤔
Hey #Maintainers could you please give me any hint about #Debian #Aptly #Repository #AppStram #MetaData ?
How I can add Icons & Screenshots to my repo ?
@argv_minus_one It isn't the #midi end that's failing. It's #sound output that's failing.
There's dozens, even hundreds, of #linux programs in the #debian repo that have no problem *reading a midi file*.
Only a couple can actually *make noise happen*.
This isn't a "does not support midi" problem. It's a "sound system is fundamentally broken" problem.
There is a new application available for Sparkers: OnionMedia X https://sparkylinux.org/onionmedia-x/ #linux #debian #sparkylinux

From #debian, I've tried
- showq
- bristol
- midish (special hell here that requires a config file it will not create even a default for)
- fluidsynth
- pmidi
- timidity
all failed in various ways
EXISTENCE PROOF
**With no configuration changes** I was able to make `wildmidi` play a file just fine. It can be done!
`wildmidi` doesn't support keyboard input, sadly.
Just trying to get a simple way to explore transcription...
@MarvinTheMartian @ecsd @improbite I'm the other way: I like Debian for servers, and like POP_OS! for desktop. Debian 12 has me considering it for a desktop, and I use it on a couple of them... If a common "WebDev" needs all the bells and whistles in an Ubuntu system, I worry about them. Although I have used Ubuntu for the kernel and distro support for things like T.38 Fax Modems and other weirdies. #Debian
@dizzy #debian everywhere, #raspbian, #slackware , and #lfs because you know, that strange hobby.
Love the snarky comments on the Debian upgrade guide:
```
# Perform the major release upgrade, removing packages if required
# Interrupting this step after downloading has completed is an excellent way to stress-test your backups
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
$ sudo apt-get full-upgrade
```

Ça fait vraiment plaisir de trouver un début de #traduction du manuel d’installation de #Debian en #kabyle.
Traduit à 2% au même titre que le norvégien.
> Qui aurait pu prédire ?
@dizzy I have no idea what counts as “primary”, since most of my personal services on linux run in alpine containers, but half are on #synology’s unique distro, other half on #raspbian (a #debian); at work 25+ datacenters of #OracleLinux (a #rhel); but I’m also actively moving my raspbian & synology services to #freebsd; and I’m spending most of my free time trying to get useful at contributing to #illumos.
Would you believe my day job is as a technical project manager?
@Raspberry_Pi any schedule when we'll get an official rpiOs Bookworm?

Gestern aktualisierte ich #Mastodon auf Version 4.2.0. Meine Erfahrungen habe ich mal unter https://kubieziel.de/blog/archives/1695-Aktualisierung-von-Mastodon-auf-Version-4.2.0.html
aufgeschrieben.
@galaxydinodragon I've been #Debian since 1999... and party like it!
under #debian sid & bookworm (stable) the NIC of the #cubieboard seems software broken. I get a link but no address(es). An USB NIC using the same network connection works fine.
😞
I tried to use #FreeBSD but my #Cubieboard did not see its SATA hdd.
So back to #debian?

@hovav It did not make it to libwebp 1.3.2. Some linux distros have cherrypicked it for their packages though. For example #debian unstable:
libwebp (1.3.2-0.3) unstable; urgency=medium

@umiamz I just reenabled ElasticSearch and made that modification to the jvm options and instead of 13.4GB/15.6GB I'm at 7.3GB of 15.6GB. Excellent. Thank you for the tip. I will tweak as required. ElasticSearch is definitely taking some CPU time as well but this could be just from being new, so I'll let it run for a few days and see what the experience is like.

@anderspuck

Both #ejabberd by @ejabberd and #prosody by @prosodyim are pretty easy to install and configure nowadays. I use the official #Debian packages for that, which you should have in Ubuntu as well. The hardest part is DNS and the right selection of ports.
Looking for an server for at home, optimal with some remote mgmt, multiple sata ports, enough ram and - while ideling - not too much power usage (and not too much DIY, adding Ram or case is ok but CPU+cooling should be already inserted). X86 or Arm (or any other architecture that #Debian supports). Any hints would be apreciated
@sebsauvage évidemment, juste quand je finis d'écrire mon message c'est le moment où je trouve la réponse.
C'est bien une convention d'écriture de #debian/#ubuntu.
@gnutelephony I feel this one from both sides. On the one hand, I love the stability of #Debian; it's so stable that unattended-upgrades is possible and trusted. OTOH, as a FLOSS developer, maintaining old branches of things has no enjoyment for me and is not something I would do on something even close to the scale of the #Linux #kernel voluntarily.
The real problem here is, I think, that there is nobody willing to pay for staffing for #LTS.

The #Debian long term review is offiically ready to be edited. All the b-roll is done, the voice over is done. All I need to do is edit it, which I will do tomorrow. That was quite a ride.
2 videos recorded tonight. 1 of them is my #Debian Long Term Review.
not sure if either of them get posted tonight. It's late and IDK how long I'll be able to edit. we'll see.

A deep-dive look at the latest Linux Mint LMDE 6 Faye BETA release:
https://tiffybelle.vivaldi.net/2023/09/20/deep-dive-linux-mint-lmde-6-faye-review/
In this blog post, I opine on why the #Debian Edition of #Mint appeals to me over the main Mint #Ubuntu release.
I also take an in-depth look at what the latest LMDE 6 has to offer, from installation to setting up #Cinnamon after the initial boot.
I had great fun trying the new LMDE out!

Installing Jellyfin on a Debian bookworm machine
sudo apt install extrepo
sudo extrepo enable jellyfin
sudo apt update
sudo apt install jellyfin
Jellyfin will be running on 0.0.0.0:8096
This basically avoids the manual process of installing Jellyfin from upstream Debian repo as mentioned here:

Hello friends #Linux #Mint #Debian Edition users who enjoy the #Brave and #Vivaldi browsers!
I would really like to use Vivaldi with the system's native window decoration. In the image of this post, @brave is on the left and @Vivaldi on the right. I would really like the window control buttons in Vivaldi to look like the native ones, like they do in Brave. Does anyone know how to do this? I'm using #Cinnamon

Estou usando o #Cinnamon

Hello Linux People!
I have been using debian based distros i.e. kali, ubuntu, linux mint, pop OS, etc for years now; I now want to switch the distro and learn something new, please suggest which is the next good option for devs/hackers after debian.
The suggested debian should have good support with the tools and software.
I was finally able to play a little #Starfield last night!
For those of you on #Debian 12 stable, like myself, I needed to use "Proton Experimental" and configure the following launch options:
VKD3D_CONFIG=force_host_cached VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json %command%
Running smooth on my Ryzen 7 5800X and Radeon RX 6800 XT, even at 4K.
Been checking out the recently released Linux Mint LMDE 6 "Faye" BETA edition:
https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4562
No interest in using the #Ubuntu release, but this latest LMDE based on #Debian 12 Bookworm feels very solid and polished already.
I usually just use #Debian, but the additions and utilities by the #Mint team all feel like an enhancement to the overall Debian experience. The #Cinnamon DE is pretty nice to use too.
Well worth checking out.
Do you want to see an app included in FreedomBox?
If there's a Debian package available for it, you can write a FreedomBox app for it in Python. We are always looking for more app developers for FreedomBox.
Please refer to FreedomBox's Developer Documentation on how to get started.
TIL about the existence of extrepo in the #debian repositories. It let's you search for software in external repositories and add them to your sources lists. No more need to hunt for those repos manually, yay!
