Ever been to Tlaquepaque? It's a super cool arts district in Sedona with over 90 bronze sculptures by the amazing Chris Navarro.

My favorite is Mustang Pride, because it allows me to take silly photos.

White River Falls, in Central Oregon (west coast, USA).

It's startling to come across such a thundering outpour of water in the high desert. In the second photo, you can see the derelict power station at the bottom of the falls.

West of the Cascade Mountains, it's all about the moss and ferns and Douglas fir trees. The moment you cross over east of the Cascades, it's Ponderosa pines and sagebrush, the type of landscape you expect to see in an old Western movie.

A large, three-step waterfall pours over light brown basalt rocks with greenery growing where the spray hits. Blue sky above.
A river winds through the bottom of a basalt gorge, where a few trees grow. At the top of the gorge, stark high desert plateaus with sagebrush. At the bottom, a derelict power station, visible as a failing roof.

In the early 1990s, I toured the south-western US, and this was taken the day I visited Death Valley. It's a view over the salt flats in Badwater Basin, which is the lowest point in N America, at 86 m below sea-level.
It was over 40°C that day, I remember, and if you put on the aircon in the car, the engine would overheat. Hop out, take a picture, and then get moving again fast was the only option...

Today's ride.
Started on a little section called Teddy Bear. Was nice, pretty easy, with interest. No trail signs, but it was on Trailforks, but not the park trail maps.
Went up lower Golden Gate where I think the last 3 are from, and over to upper Gates Pass where I found trails with signage but not on Trailforks or the park maps, so that was interesting.

Dear Friends,
#ClimateDiary 1/3
PM2.5 (particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers) was 151 at 06:00 when this photo was made. These particles are from #Quebec, #Canada #WildFires. In Quebec the rate of wildfires so far this year is 600x more than average. 160,000 hectares have burned. #Pennsylvania and #NewJersey are at very high fire risk. Risk is added by chances for #DryThunderstorms. They are a feature of #desert climate.

Sedona Red Rocks Abstract in Orange. The red rocks of Sedona, Arizona have be sculpted by wind and rain and baked by searing heat for centuries. Rounded here, jagged there, striped with layer upon layer of sediment and glowing various colors in the ever-changing sunlight. This is a landscape that seems to be always changing but ever the same - otherworldly. Who keeps the secrets and can tell the stories of this ancient landscape?

Sedona has long been regarded as a sacred and powerful place. A cathedral without walls, Stonehenge not yet assembled. Searchers from around the world travel here to experience the mysterious cosmic forces that are said to emanate from the red rocks. They come in search of the swirling centers of energy that are conducive to healing, meditation and self-exploration called vortexes. These are places where the earth seems especially alive with energy. People often report feeling inspired, recharged or uplifted after visiting the area.

Oh, look! A desert kite with no 'killing pits' at its end. Here, the 'lead-in' walls (blue) lead to a series of 'folds'/cells (red), of a type that occur all over the Jordanian desert.

The stones for the cells could have been reused later on, taken from a putative 'kite' enclosure. But there definitely doesn't appear to have been the space at this point for that to have been the case; the other kite 'heads' are much larger.

More of life on the #desert #homestead: we have discovered we're popular in a way never expected.... being full of 💩💩💩... quite literally. Five equines on the place. Months of manure collecting where most neighbors are trying to develop gardens and trees. People are starting to show up to load their truck or car or skidsteer full of old manure. Me: "Here, please let me help. Please take more!! Hey, c'mon, you could fit 2 more bags in there." 😂

But, I was happy to discover they finally rerouted the road around the private property owner who had denied access to the site for so long. “It’s a micro-super bloom!”

A New York Times article profiles the efforts by California botanists to find rare and ephemeral native plants. They're emerging to flower, often for the first time in many years, after the unusually intense winter rains.

"She was scouring the desert for delicate blooms so tiny that they are called “belly flowers,” because botanists must get down on their stomachs to get a proper look at them."

Late-day light illuminates snow covered ridges and thin forest along the summit of the Panamint Range, Death Valley National Park.

The reputation of Death Valley National Park is mostly tied to heat — the desert, the dunes, the rare rainfall. I once asked German relatives why they choose to visit in the middle of summer when few of us would choose to go there. The answer, more or less, was that Death Valley is famous for being the hottest place on earth, and that is what they wanted to experience. People who “know” the park from that perspective are often shocked to find that snow is common here in the mountains.

Landmannalaugar is a really cool place.

Click to see full upright photo

The upright photo shows a mountain landscape in Iceland. At the bottom of the photo, the foreground is given by a dark, shady hill edge, and you notice is the tiny silhouette of a single hiker walking on the hill edge. The mid ground and background of the photo is given by the wide, open desert-like landscape, shining brightly in different tones of yellow and partly green from the moss growing on the lava soil. No sky is seen on the photo, as it is shot from the top of an opposite mountain, directed towards the lower hill edge and the lowland behind (forming the middle ground of the photo). The background is given by the mountain range beyond the lowland. The lowland in the middle ground is a flat flood zone of a river, mostly dried out at the time the photo was taken. Looking carefully, you notice, in different tones of ocher, the meanders of the partly dried river – traces of past flowing water.
