Are myasthenia gravis symptoms always better in the morning? People with MG usually feel better in the mornings and then get worse as the day progresses. Though this is true for most, it doesn't always happen. Some people, like me, are worse in the mornings. It's called "paradoxical weakness".
Kelan tulkkauspalvelusta ulinaa.
Tilasin viittomakielen tulkkeja ennakkoon marraskuussa järjestettävään Suomen Kuurosokeat ry:n syyskokoukseen.
Eilen Kela laittoi viestiä, ja kyseenalaisti tulkintarpeeni täysin. Olin aivan ihmeissäni, koska viestissä luki "Kyseessä on viittomakielinen tapahtuma". 🤯
Kuurosokeus on kirjo. Kommunikaatiotapoja on lukuisia ja viittomakieli on vain pieni osa sitä. Kokouksessa käytetään pääsääntöisesti puhetta ja jokaisella jäsenellä on omat avustajat ja tulkkinsa mukana.

Vivaldi Browser – First Impressions of a Disabled User
Firefox has always been my go to browser and I recently tried DuckDuckGo but, spent a little timme playing with the #VivaldiBrowser in the last few days. I've decided to update this post by sharing my impressions as a user with multiple physical and invisible disabilities. I'm not a "tech guy" by any means.
I'm composing this update using the "Notes" feature built into the browser. I can interact with other Mastodon users while still working on research and articles in the sidebar and thus far, I like this feature. It allows users to switch from markdown view to editor, add captures of selected areas or full pages, as well as attachments. With functions like…
* bullet points
* ~~strikethrough~~
* link creation
* and indentation options,
...it works as good, if not better than other processors, like MS Word. The notes can be saved and organized into folders, as well. It's much more than just a place to make "notes".
There is multitude of themes available including, several Star Trek themes that may be attractive to many users on Mastodon. Vivaldi allows you to modify the colors of existing themes, create your own, and schedule them to change at selected times automatically. For those with visual impairment or colorblindness, this customization option is great, especially to differentiate between regular and private windows. It's definitely not the singular "one size fits some" option, offered in some browsers. Vivaldi seems to recognize individuality and personal expression with the design of their browser.
The sidebar also includes tabs to access many functions including a reading list, the "notes" word processor and a built-in translator. Users with accounts on Vivaldi Social, can easily access them through a tab, also on the sidebar. I worked on configuring my new Vivaldi account on the side while interacting with others using my Kolektiva account open in the main window next to it. The size of the sidebar and columns can also be adjusted to user preferences and multiple tabs can be titled to view all at once. There's also a "Workspaces" tab allowing users to "declutter your tabs by separating social, work and hobbies" into separate workspaces. A "pause" button at the bottom lets you "take a break" from webpages and work, to focus on other things without closing the tabs. Clicking the pause button "mutes and stops HTML5 audio and videos, hides all tabs, panels and other content leaving the screen clean", while saving resources.
As someone with a limb difference disability (one functioning hand) I use voice recognition software. I found some pros and cons in regard. The biggest "pro" when comparing Vivaldi to Firefox is, my voice recognition software actually works, unlike in Firefox. Despite the existence of a Firefox extension, it doesn't work at all and other users have had this complaint. When composing directly on Mastodon, it does not capitalize the first word of a sentence, which is a problem I've had using any browser. The extensions associated with my voice app, that should alleviate this issue, do not seem to function with well with Edge or DuckDuckGo either. One negative of the Vivaldi browser is that, aside from the common challenges mentioned above, the Vivaldi browser seems to miss spell words occasionally, while other browsers do not do this. The misspelling of the word "time" at the top of this post (timme), was left intentionally as an example. All corrections on done on Mastodon have to be made manually rather than by voice command but, this is true with every browser. I'm hoping eventually, Vivaldi will create an extension for Nuance Dragon voice software that will work better than the others I've mentioned.
The only other drawback so far, is the learning curve associated with the multitude of very cool features. Once I figure it all out, the Vivaldi browser will be even more accommodating to my invisible disabilities, in regard to organization. As a visual person, I especially like the page view when hovering over open tabs. There are so many features, I have yet to discover all of them. With tabs tiling, QR code creation and a plethora of other features, I've yet to crack the tip of the iceberg on this thing. The initial use may be a bit overwhelming to users with invisible disabilities, simply because of the number of features and settings available. I feel once individuals get past that, they may find the browser to be an accommodating accessibility tool for organization. With Vivaldi just a step behind Firefox regarding privacy in many reviews, it may become my main browser. I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

"Suppose the disabilities of age mean you can no longer safely live in your own home. Well, you’re on your own. Unless you can afford to move to some kind of assisted-living facility, you’re in real trouble.
Time for another positive affirmation, picked at random from a list:
#20: “I can do anything I put my mind to.”
I’ve tended to agree with this statement for things like music, art, code, or performing for others. But when it has to do with my body and its capabilities, I struggle quite a lot.
Every time I feel weak, a part of me blames myself. For no reason, I know…but this is all still difficult to process. And with chronic illness, especially neurological/immunological, I don’t even know the full extent of what I need to come to terms with. It keeps me in a vicious cycle of trauma and grief without any end in sight.
So, I’ll work on that I guess. It’ll take time but I’ll get there.
Day 2 with the new walker.
My back has that feeling of muscle tiredness; the kind you get when they've been atrophied by lack of use and now they're trying to keep up with the new activity.
I think this is a good sign.
I've tried walking unaided and it's not possible yet, but I can manage a few steps provided there's something I can hold on to.
I think this all stems from my feet surgery 15 years ago. I had to get a cane after that and it's been downhill ever since.

My housemate was dumped by her boyfriend a couple of weeks ago, and is trying to navigate how to still be friends with him going forward.
We were talking about it the other day, and she said that while in this relationship she had been the most clearly straightforward shed ever been in a relationship, asking for what she needs and clearly communicating her feelings.
It's something she and I have talked about a LOT, because we dated for almost 10 years and have lived together for a further 10 years post our break up.
She said "you know, I think I'm going to just put in my dating profiles that I'm not autistic but I get on with autistic people best because I like when things are clear and open and honest".
I'm like 🤔😏
(She's scored very low on the Raads-R, but I still think she's one of us..)
Also, because of this I'll often post my day's To Do list on Facebook, and then post updates of the things I've gotten done. It's super helpful to have people cheering me on, especially on days where my #ExecutiveDysfunction is dysfunctioning and my #PDAAustism is really PDAing..
⚠️ CW – Suicide Prevention Month (TBI and Suicide)⚠️
September is National suicide prevention month and many members of the Invisible Disability Community are at high risk but, they're not alone. Individuals in the LGBTQIA community are "four times more likely" to make such an attempt for much the same reason as disabled individuals. The way they are mistreated and stigmatized in society. It is also the second leading cause of death for young people in the US between the ages of 18 and 25. "Native American communities experience higher rates of suicide compared to all other racial and ethnic groups in the US being the eighth leading cause of death…".
I thought this would be a good time to migrate and repost a piece I did on TBI "traumatic brain injury" and suicide to include these other at risk groups. What can you do if someone in your life is at risk? Spend some time with them, don't be judgmental, listen and love. If you see them being victimized or bullied, stand up and say something.
TBI - Traumatic Brain Injury and Suicide (originally posted Dec 27, 2022)
Why support is so important for those that live with TBI and Brain Injury. Between 2014 to 2017, the traumatic brain injury-linked death rate rose from 16.3 to 17.5 per 100,000 people.
There were 61,131 TBI-linked deaths in 2017 alone, and nearly half of these deaths were by suicide or homicide from 2015 to 2017. Last summer, a rash of suicides on the USS Washington raised questions about lack of support and services said to contribute to these deaths.
The links below present the dismal statistics and some ways to help prevent suicide among the population living with Brain Injuries and other marginalized people.

The York Access Hub runs a Facebook Group where we invite all York businesses, venues and facilities to join to make us aware of their accessibility to the disabled community. It’s also open to individuals who wish to know of such amenities. Come on York businesses, join up ! #accessibility #york #business #disability

For the first few years of the pandemic, my employer was really good about accommodating people's working styles. Whatever made you more productive was okay (WFH, hybrid, or in the office). But I suspected it wouldn't always be this way, so I asked my manager to move me to a permanent WFH contract. He said he didn't think that was necessary. He promised he'd support me, that we could just agree it between us.

Recent blog entry by disability activist Alice Wong.
"This was the first time a host asked me to consider modifying my response. It felt like censorship to me, a way to dampen my valid frustration and disappointment in certain public figures and reshape my remarks in the name of civility, respectability, and palatability." @academicchatter @disability

The first track on #Kflay's new album is all about being angry and coming to terms with a new #disability, which is a subject that doesn't get nearly enough attention in mainstream discourse.

Vivaldi – Setting an Example for Other Instances on Mastodon regarding Ableism:
I don't often have good things to say about many companies, however, in this case I have no choice but to commend the makers of #VivaldiBrowser in regard to their @Vivaldi instance, here on Mastodon.
Many users with disabilities, including myself, have often taken exception to most instance rules and the wording of the "Mastodon Server Covenant". I have had a piece on the back burner about this issue for quite some time, while examples of this problem continued to occur. Many disabled users have said they feel excluded by these rules, and therefore, left vulnerable to ableism. I personally have had certain instance administrators ignore blatant examples of ableism, seemingly on the technicality that, it does not violate their rules; or that of the Mastodon Server Covenant. To be clear, the instances I have accounts on (kolektiva.social and neurodifferent.me) do list ableism as an offense, and neurodifferent.me seems particularly protective of CERTAIN users in this way.
Servers on mastodon are required under the covenant to have:
"Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia.
Users must have the confidence that they are joining a safe space, free from white supremacy, anti-semitism and transphobia of other platforms."
There is absolutely no mention of ableism or any categorization that it would fall under. So, what about Vivaldi social?
I downloaded the Vivaldi browser last week and have not completely familiarized myself with it but, if you like the bells and whistles that go along with customizable browsers, you should like Vivaldi. It's equipped with many fantastic features for research and writing, as well. They have also recently taken steps to protect the privacy of it's browser users from prying Google eyes. After discovering that they had an instance here on Mastodon, I reached out to Vivaldi who graciously responded to me on several occasions. Their Mastodon instance even offers its users a blog space for writing. This was an exciting prospect for me.
When I looked up instance rules for Vivaldi social, I found the rules to be very similar to many instances and Mastodon's server covenant with a couple of additions including: xenophobia and casteism. Though xenophobia would seem to encompass ableism, I asked about the absence of the term on their server rules. Today, I received a response that speaks volumes about the character of those involved with Vivaldi and their Mastodon instance.
The correspondence said in part: "While for us it's common sense that any form of discrimination is not acceptable, it probably is best to spell it out more clearly. So, we've tweaked the wording of the server rules now." So what do Vivaldi's "tweaked" rules say?
"No discrimination of any form (incl. racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, casteism, ableism, etc.)".
I was pleasantly flabbergasted by this. Words like "fantabulous" and "bravissimo" are not a strong enough complement to this statement of equality and inclusion of the disability community by Vivaldi. Thank you so much for this consideration. Hopefully, other servers will follow the example you have set by adding one simple word to your server rules. You are truly a friend and ally to people with invisible disabilities throughout the world. There is no doubt in my mind about another statement on Vivaldi's server registration page: "EVERYONE IS WELCOME". Thank you again Vivaldi.

""If your activism isn't accessible and inclusive, who is it even for?"

Woke up in an intense amount of pain this morning, way way beyond my baseline (which has been creeping upwards the last month). I needed the transit passes before, but now I *desperately* need them in order to make drs appointments to investigate all this new pain. They're 26 bucks for a weekly and 96 for the month, but I can't a monthly for Sept, just Oct. Pls, can someone slide me pass money?
