There is also a new module in the middle of my Discover feed containing a # of topics I can follow. Google is really pushing for you to let them know what you like (which obviously drives the entire experience).
And last, I'm also seeing a new choice at the bottom of my Discover feed where you can choose to see more content based on what you are following specifically versus your typical feed based on what Google thinks it knows about you. Very interesting
There's also the fake search box that drives you back to the SERPs for that topic (which has been around for a bit). But now when you visit the SERPs, I'm now seeing the "New for you" carousel, which seems to provide several layers there. So like I thought, it can push all of the other results down heavily.
Interested in Discover? Google said features for following topics would roll out 'in the coming weeks', and I'm now consistently seeing that in Discover. That just hit my feed late yesterday. I'm now seeing articles organized by topic, which has a prominent "Follow" or "Following" pill.

More Google Discover testing. I'm now seeing more examples of Google driving users to the SERPs from within Discover via a magnifying glass search box. It's a little deceptive since it looks like you can enter a search there, but tapping it takes you to a fresh SERP for that query. There are also reports of being able to follow that topic within Discover. I haven't seen that option but have seen screenshots. Just a heads-up if Discover is important for your business.

I think a lot of it stems from Mastodon users wanting to be searchable and discoverable but the only way to opt-in to this is unfortunately by using a lot of hash-tags. If toots were searchable this wouldn't be necessary.
The https://universeodon.com instance has implemented a custom feature for searching text in posts which I've been trying out and it's great. I'm all for discoverability without having to use hashtags as long as it respects those who choose not to be.
I'm hoping to see adoption of a way to fulltext search being implemented soon. 😊 It's being discussed over on GitHub.

OK, let's reverse course again. The Helpful Content Update DOES impact Discover, but it's a light signal for it. And it's been used since last October for Discover. But... I can't see many sites impacted by the HCU getting much traffic from Discover, so maybe doesn't matter. :) -> Google's Danny Sullivan corrects himself, now says Discover is impacted by the Helpful Content Update

It makes total sense that the HCU would impact Discover visibility. That wasn't the case when it rolled out, but now it can. I wonder when that went into effect. :) -> Google's helpful content update now can impact Google Discover visibility, as do other ranking systems like core updates via @rustybrick

Is there any practice to #discover the "official" #mastodon presence for a tech company.
For example, I'd like to subscribe to the gitlab mastodon account but obviously a search for gitlab on mastodon yields tons of results that aren't the company. (They are having downtime, I'd like to hear when its done).
This is one of those use cases that Tw* was good for!
