A new subspecies of grass lizard, which has been named Garumbatitan morellensis, was discovered in Spain.
This new dinosaur has been named Garumbatitan morellensis and was 10 meters high and 25 meters long.

It was exactly six years ago tonight that Star Trek Discovery premiered. The first hour was on free CBS broadcast television and the second hour streamed on CBS+ (or tried to).
It was almost impossible to watch the second hour because CBS greatly underestimated the bandwidth they would need to stream to millions of users, all at the same time. This is why they premiere the episodes in the middle of the night now - to spread out the demand.

I liked the mirror universe when it first showed up, but it just feels like it's been done too much now. So... Ich bin ja gerade gesundheitlich etwas angeschlagen und hab die Zeit genutzt mit mal #startrek #discovery komplett anzusehen. Das war irgendwas zwischen harter Arbeit und starken Schmerzen. Ich hatte das schon mal vor ewigen Zeiten angefangen, dann aber abgebrochen weil es so schlecht war. Jetzt hab ich Staffel 1-4 durch und auch wenn es dann etwas besser wurde, es war von Anfang bis Ende schlecht. Das stellt sogar Voyager in den Schatten und das war schon kaum zu unterbieten.
Discovery ist eine Mischung aus schlechtem Script, mittelmäßigen Schauspielern, Virtue Signaling und alles ist von CGI zusammengeklebt. Keine großen Fragen, keine Charakterbildung (haben sie bei Saru versucht, aber Mega-fail), dümmliche Dialoge und nervige Charaktere. Überhaupt waren so gut wie alle Charaktere flach und wenig ausgearbeitet.Die einzige Ausnahme sehe ich Michelle Yeoh alias Philippa. Die hat es trotz schlechtem Script geschafft ihren Charakter halbwegs interessant darzustellen. Andere sind einfach nur absurd. Tilly, angeblich hyperintelligent, macht dauernd dummes Zeug. Überhaupt ist es interessant, dass ausgerechnet die fette Frau es ist, die von Komplexen zerfressen ist. Das passt auch zu dem Rückschritt wie die Klingonen als mordlüsterne, flache Gestalten dargestellt werden. Da war Star Trek echt schon mal weiter.
Adira stellt Wesley Crusher in Nervigkeit in den Schatten und ihr Sidekick Gray ist ein noch größerer Fail. Die bringen die Story Null voran, vor allem Gray. Ehrlich, was soll dieser Leprechaun in einen SciFi-Frenchaise? In jeder Folge gibt's minutenlange Phasen leerer Gefühlsduselei, wahrscheinlich dass sich die Zuschauer wohl fühlen.
Das größte Problem sehe ich aber im Gesamtplot. Die reisen 900 Jahre in die Zukunft um die Föderation zu retten. Das ist als ob man sich ein paar Wikinger holt um die EU zu reformieren. Selbst wenn es Umbrüche und Rückschläge gab, 900 Jahre sind eine verdammt lange Zeit und es ist Bullshit zu behaupten, dass keiner von den tausenden bewohnten Welten in der Zwischenzeit nicht auch den Sporenantrieb entdeckt haben soll.
Und Spock war ja nun einfach nur noch albern, so wie er dargestellt wurde... Eigentlich haben die das Franchise so nachhaltig beschädigt, dass man jetzt damit aufhören könnte, wenn nicht Picard wäre.

A new technique analysing modern #genetic data suggests that pre-humans survived in a group of only 1,280 individuals.
“About 98.7% of human ancestors were lost,” says Haipeng Li, a population geneticist at the University of Chinese Academy of #Sciences in Beijing, who co-led the study. First season of Picard in the bag. First three episodes of Discovery season 1 in the bag.
I did not think for a moment that Discovery could meet or surpass the bar that Picard set for me, but holy hell, these new Star Trek shows are everything I could possibly want in a continuation (and prequel-ing) of what came before.
I don't have Paramount+ yet, but checked these out of my local library. I think, though, these may have convinced me to break my golden rule and begrudgingly subscribe to yet another damn streaming service.

#Voyager is that startup that never quite lands their IPO, and keeps having to seek new sources of VC funding along the way. They keep picking up new people, and the old hands can barely remember what it was like before seven years of 24/7 crunch time.

#Picard is the local #Solaris users group that's all gung-ho about #Illumos. They've got some good points and originated some iconic features, but they're principally about nostalgia these days.
#tos is the retrocomputing club. Spectrum Sinclairs and Altairs line the walls, but are mostly for show. Someone converted an old IBM POWER workstation into a #Hackintosh so they could show Kid Pix to the kids. Everybody else spends their time showing off their DOS savegame files on the club's file server. One guy is playing DOOM in the corner with the music coming from an external Roland MIDI keyboard. Another guy figured out how to launch old DOS door games under containerized #dosemu instances via inetd, but people stopped talking to him once he solved the sandbox escape problem by having systemd launch the containers on-demand in a deprivileged chroot.
#StrangeNewWorlds is the club founded by that guy from the retrocomputing club that got DOS door games running via systemd; Now he's porting his door game collection to run in #webassembly, and has managed to reach a new generation of people respinning the classics.
#Enterprise is the #beos users group. Really a subgroup of the local retrocomputing club. They hate it, because people keep confusing their interests with Mac OS Classic and Linux.
