A previously unknown giant herbivore discovered (video)
A new subspecies of grass lizard, which has been named Garumbatitan morellensis, was discovered in Spain.
This new dinosaur has been named Garumbatitan morellensis and was 10 meters high and 25 meters long.
The herbivore was a four-legged herbivore with a long neck and tail, not unlike a brachiosaurus.
It was exactly six years ago tonight that Star Trek Discovery premiered. The first hour was on free CBS broadcast television and the second hour streamed on CBS+ (or tried to).
It was almost impossible to watch the second hour because CBS greatly underestimated the bandwidth they would need to stream to millions of users, all at the same time. This is why they premiere the episodes in the middle of the night now - to spread out the demand.
I found Dr Pollard intriguing for her commitment to stay on as an (energetic) emergency physician through the #Discovery’s journey forward to the future.
Really wish we’d gotten to know #StarTrek’s RA Bryce better - pilot, Comms officer, engineer, he was always cool. But recognize Rowe has been busy bringing representation to lead and principal roles in other projects.

Star Trek: Discovery started 6 years ago today on CBS (and then CBS All Access, which became Paramount+), initiating a revival of the Trek franchise on the small screen (Short Treks, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, very Short treks, and the upcoming Starfleet Academy & Section 31).
The fifth and final season will be broadcast in early 2024.
I just finished the first season of Star Trek Discovery. I was liking it a lot until the mirror universe showed up. I liked the mirror universe when it first showed up, but it just feels like it's been done too much now. Discovery did a very interesting twist on it, that I didn't see coming, and it made the whole season one of the better Star Trek season. I can't wait to see what happens in season #2. #StarTrek #Discovery #StarTrekDiscovery
“It may not be the beginning of the built environment, but it is the earliest time we have of people taking trees, taking charge of this material, and shaping something that has no precedent, that has no natural form to emulate. [...] It’s a real cultural imposition on the landscape.”
The #discovery expands our understanding of early human behavior, suggesting that advanced behaviors were more widespread than previously thought.

So...

#JukeboxFridayNight theme is #Discovery with an emphasis on the scientific variety. Giant Squid was a post metal band that drew influence from aquatic life. Every song on this album is themed around a different life form; this one, the pacific lamprey.
Maybe another song for #JukeboxFridayNight might be good? Too tired to look around for things so this is yet another Stax number.
It's called Daddy Didn't Tell Me, by The Astors, and it might not be immediately obvious how this fits the #Discovery theme. But the song is about discovering how to act when you fall madly in love. So I think that works.
And another Stax song, this time by the great Mavis Staples: I Have Learned To Do Without You.
(nerdy detail - yes, it's on the Volt label, but Stax and Volt were one and the same, because at the time there was a limit on how many songs from each label a radio station could play, so having two imprints doubled that quota. Anyway, sit back and enjoy Mavis giving her all to the big climactic crescendo.)
Discovery … let name-check a famous inventor, then.
A Chinn-Chapman composition played by session musicians, with the "band" only providing vocals. Their musical abilities would be used in the studio from 1972.

He kept dreamin'
Ooh, that someday he'd be a star (A superstar, but he didn't get far)
But he sure found out the hard way
That dreams don't always come true
A song with an appropriate title, from Evergrey, one of my favorite band ever.
This is from their first album, almost forgotten even by the band itself (they rarely play live something from it). But great stuff nonetheless.

How do we make discoveries? We ask questions like: why?
Plus, this one may come as a discovery for some people.
Ever wondered why the Collective Soul single was called "Why pt2"?
Perhaps it has something to do with their b-side from the "Breathe" single (I had the cassingle).

Matisyahu - Searchin
In the Earth, there are so many wonderful treasures.
And if you know where to dig, you will find gold, diamonds, all kinds of treasures.
But if you don't know where to dig, all you will find is rocks and dirt.
He can show you where to dig, and what to dig for,
But the digging you must do yourself
(The digging you must do yourself)
Andrew Bird - Lull
IDK why this is the first song that came to mind. Inner exploration compared to deep sea exploration.
"Being alone, it can be quite romantic
Like Jacques Cousteau underneath the Atlantic
A fantastic voyage to parts unknown
Going to depths where the sun's never shone
And I fascinate myself when I'm alone"
Ho'oleilana - a fossil from a time near the birth of the universe
Check out this video for more context and insights on the process of formation of Baryon Acoustic oscillations - with credits to ARC Centre of Excellence for All-Sky Astrophysics (CAASTRO)
Ka’iu and Larry Kimura named other astronomical objects before: the interstellar asteroid ʻOumuamua, the imaged black hole Pōwehi (M87*), and others as part of the "A Hua He Inoa" program: Leleākūhonua an extreme transneptunian, Pōniuāʻena a quasar, ...

Last but not least, a new measurement of the Hubble Constant is obtained by analyzing the geometrical properties of Ho'oleilana: 76.9 (+8.2)(-4.8) km/s /Mpc
This value is consistent with other direct local probes, and further exacerbates the "Hubble tension" in the ΛCDM model.

A major aspect of the study presented in this paper is the analysis conducted by Cullan Howlett to understand the significance of this discovery against a physical BAO model, using in particular mock galaxy catalogs with and without BAO features.
A video visualization of the cosmography of Ho'oleilana is part of the paper. Major components in proximity to the shell are highlighted and identified by name. The historic Boötes Void lies interior to the shell structure.

The cosmography of Ho'oleilana is pretty amazing: its shell includes some of the largest known structures of the universe: the Sloan Great Wall, CfA Great Wall, Hercules Supercluster, Corona-Borealis Supercluster... At its core is the Boötes Supercluster.

Ho'oleilana was found unexpectedly in the distribution of galaxies of the Cosmicflows-4 Catalog, within its SDSS PV "Peculiar Velocities" subsample of early-type galaxies, derived from fundamental plane measurements.
By contrast, the discovery of Ho'oleilana represents the 1st direct evidence of a BAO, as an individual entity and a new confirmation of the standard model of cosmology.
A discovery made 53 years after the prediction - that's more time elapsed than for e.g. Higgs and his boson!
Acoustic waves generated in the hot plasma of the early universe became imprinted in baryon fluctuations. The prediction was made in 1970 by Jim Peebles and others. Indirect evidence of the BAO phenomenom came in 2005 by observing a peak in the pair-wise separations of galaxies.
A spherical shell-like structure 1 billion light-years in diameter named Ho’oleilana is discovered in the distribution of relatively nearby galaxies. We posit this is the 1st observation of an individual Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO).

#Human ancestors nearly went extinct 900,000 years ago
A new technique analysing modern #genetic data suggests that pre-humans survived in a group of only 1,280 individuals.
“About 98.7% of human ancestors were lost,” says Haipeng Li, a population geneticist at the University of Chinese Academy of #Sciences in Beijing, who co-led the study. He says that the fossil record in Africa and Eurasia between 950,000 and 650,000 years ago is patchy and that “the #discovery of this bottleneck may explain the chronological gap”.

Discovery is hard to get right, fancy algorithms can work with enough data
When you don't have enough data, basic signals such as like or comment counts can do the job
Nothing beats human curated discovery though, and I can't do this alone
Imagine if I could delegate this to a group of trusted users who can find and add/categorize posts and together could vote on content and categories
Imagine a single person could be in charge for the day, and it rotates between them
First season of Picard in the bag. First three episodes of Discovery season 1 in the bag.
I did not think for a moment that Discovery could meet or surpass the bar that Picard set for me, but holy hell, these new Star Trek shows are everything I could possibly want in a continuation (and prequel-ing) of what came before.
I don't have Paramount+ yet, but checked these out of my local library. I think, though, these may have convinced me to break my golden rule and begrudgingly subscribe to yet another damn streaming service.
@renice #Discovery is red team. #DS9 is the beleaguered #neteng that keeps getting told there's no funding for a dedicated blue team. Except sometimes #section31 comes along claiming to be blue team, but they're really a bunch of self-motivated charcoal-hat cowboy coders on shadow projects. You're pretty sure most of them couldn't pass the company code of conduct policy tests. There's a persistent rumor they're going to get formally recognized as a skill team any quarter now.
#Voyager is that startup that never quite lands their IPO, and keeps having to seek new sources of VC funding along the way. They keep picking up new people, and the old hands can barely remember what it was like before seven years of 24/7 crunch time.
#Prodigy is that code #bootcamp that gets away with not charging for their services because the parent company accidentally bundled them with a datacenter's electric bill, where they're just noise in the budget.
#tos is the retrocomputing club. Spectrum Sinclairs and Altairs line the walls, but are mostly for show. Someone converted an old IBM POWER workstation into a #Hackintosh so they could show Kid Pix to the kids. Everybody else spends their time showing off their DOS savegame files on the club's file server. One guy is playing DOOM in the corner with the music coming from an external Roland MIDI keyboard. Another guy figured out how to launch old DOS door games under containerized #dosemu instances via inetd, but people stopped talking to him once he solved the sandbox escape problem by having systemd launch the containers on-demand in a deprivileged chroot.
#StrangeNewWorlds is the club founded by that guy from the retrocomputing club that got DOS door games running via systemd; Now he's porting his door game collection to run in #webassembly, and has managed to reach a new generation of people respinning the classics.
Did I miss anyone?
