Kind of random question, and maybe it's just my exposure to the disease, but is "ALS" really still better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease? I just think of it as ALS. It's not like "ALS" is hard to pronounce. Now what ALS stands for, yes, that can be a mouthful. ALS itself though gets plenty of mention since it's always "ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig's Disease." If it's a generational thing, that could be. For context, I remember the 1980s.

I don't get it.

Here in Australia, in one of Sydney's biggest hospitals (Royal Prince Alfred aka RPA) masks are mandatory at all times — for everybody. And they WILL kick you out if you don't follow the rules.

Yet I'm reading that many health services worldwide are only now "considering" maybe perhaps one day reintroducing masks.

What the flaming fark? Just bloody do it! Masking saves getting a nasty dose of a number of airborne diseases, and hospitals & doctors' rooms are know for their diseases — it's why they exist for crying out loud!

We mask in shops etc too, but I get it, perhaps they're not as bad as a health setting. Perhaps. You do you there. But a hospital? There should be no question.

If not for you, for the other patients.

Sadly, this country is sliding into the #fascist cesspool the right wing has been embracing for a while now. It's a slow motion trainwreck.

The Allied forces may have won WWII, but #fascism and #hate were never defeated. Instead, these toxic and violent ideologies were driven underground and spread quietly throughout the US until recent.

The American-brand of fascism is just a different strain of the same toxic sociopolitical #disease which plagued Germany and Italy last century.

Fascism infects society just like HIV infects the body; the #American brand of #Christofascism is an evolved strain of the same disease.

The right wing endorses violence because they lack power and only know cruel oppression. They align themselves with the real owners of this country (billionaires and #corporations for their own self interests.

We cannot and must not grow numb to this, nor is there room to be afraid. Fascism occurs because #democracy is weak.

Future of the human climate niche
and
Quantifying the human cost of global warming

Future of the human climate niche
"All species have an environmental niche, and despite technological advances, humans are unlikely to be an exception. Here, we demonstrate that for millennia, human populations have resided in the same narrow part of the climatic envelope available on the globe, characterized by a major mode around ∼11 °C to 15 °C mean annual temperature (MAT). "
"We show that in a business-as-usual climate change scenario, the geographical position of this temperature niche is projected to shift more over the coming 50 y than it has moved since 6000 BP."
"Global warming will affect ecosystems as well as human health, livelihoods, food security, water supply, and economic growth in many ways."
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1910114117

Quantifying the human cost of global warming
"The costs of climate change are often estimated in monetary terms, but this raises ethical issues. Here we express them in terms of numbers of people left outside the ‘human climate niche’—defined as the historically highly conserved distribution of relative human population density with respect to mean annual temperature. We show that climate change has already put ~9% of people (>600 million) outside this niche."
"The worst-case scenarios of ~3.6 °C or even ~4.4 °C global warming could put half of the world population outside the historical climate niche, posing an existential risk"
"The ~2.7 °C global warming expected under current policies puts around a third of the world population outside the niche."
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41893-023-01132-6

This year’s dismal harvest probably will make already #expensive orange juice even more so. A gallon has climbed above $10."

FILE - This 2014 photo made available by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a feeding female Anopheles gambiae mosquito. The species is a known vector for the parasitic disease malaria. The United States has seen five cases of malaria spread by mosquitos in the last two months...the first time there's been local spread in 20 years. There were four cases detected in Florida and one in Texas, according to a health alert issued Monday, June 26, 2023, by the CDC. (James Gathany/CDC via AP, File)James Gathany/AP

Why scientists have a hard time getting money to study the root causes of disease outbreaks.

Propublica has done a series of stories which show that "government and nonprofit groups that award grants to scientists favor research that’s high tech and treatment oriented."

Novel infectious #diseases will keep coming at us, #wildlife
ecologist Peggy Eby warns. Investing in scientific work like hers “seems like a poor approach now,” she said, “but 20 years from now, we’ll look back & wonder why we didn’t do it.”

US Syphilis Cases Reach 70-Year High.

Cases of the #sexually transmitted #disease #syphilis soared in 2021 to the highest total in more than 70 years, a new report says.

Earlier this year, the #CDC issued preliminary projections that syphilis rates had made a startling jump from 2020 to 2021. But now that health officials have finalized all of the 2021 data, the increase is worse than what was announced back in March.

Alan Urban, a writer at Medium, provides an excellent weekly summary of (as he puts it) "the latest signs that we are living through the collapse of global industrial civilization." Basically it's all the bad news you'll really wish you didn't have to hear, condensed once a week into a handy list for ready reference.

He's thorough, I'll give him that, but it's not exactly the most cheerful reading. Still, if you can handle a barrage of unpleasant truths without becoming overly depressed or going insane, I recommend it.

Here's a link to this week's edition -- https://medium.com/@CollapseSurvival/collapse-catch-up-4-9-23-f55698f414f

Photo (perhaps a composite, I couldn't find the original) of an ugly landfill in the foreground. Beyond it, on the horizon, is a large city with tall buildings and with factories spewing brown and gray smoke into a hazy, smoggy sky.
