I'm tiring of Ubuntu and Gnome, and would like to go back to KDE. What #distro would you recommend? For context, Manjaro is probably out since I have an Nvidia GPU and the last time I tried it, support for the GPU wass fine until it would break suddenly.

A conservative #Linux youtuber reviewing an openly #antifascist and #anticapitalist distribution. He never mentions the general politics of the #distro , but we can see multiple times that the codename of the reviewed version is "Arditi del popolo", which is the name of the first ever armed organization organized specifically to fight against fascist "squadre", and then against the regime.

>If you like #Debian on the server, going with Debian on the desktop is probably a good idea.
The second seems a pretty substantial non sequitur from the first 😮
What about peeps who like a "set & forget" server, yet still want their desktop penguin to include non ice age package versions? Surely the set of criteria one would use to ascertain their use-case's optimum desktop #distro should be slightly more comprehensive than merely "what do you run on your server?" ? 🤷♀️

I'm going to put on my flameproof suit and ask the Internet about Linux distros...
In the 1990s, I ran Red Hat
In the early 2000s, I ran Debian
In 2006 and since, I ran Ubuntu
The whole issue of snaps and privacy with Ubuntu has me looking for a new home, but:
- Guix's packages are often very out of date, making GuixSD a non-starter
- PopOS seems to not have any releases since 2022
I need a good general purpose OS for my laptop and everyday use.

Why don't more people use desktop Linux? I have a theory you might not like
"There might be a very simple explanation for why the masses have yet to adopt Linux as their desktop operating system and it's one the open-source community won't like"

I installed #debian and #vscode on my new laptop (on an external SSD for now). Of course vscode hangs at startup. Some posts say it can be fixed by deleting one of two keys from the key ring, but really?
I’m still tempted to try a rolling #linux #distro, but which one? I don’t want one that takes forever to install and manage, uses #xfce and doesn’t pre install hundreds of utilities and games I’ll never use. Oh and a nice theme too perhaps?
🐧 Nitrux 3.0.0 Review: Is This Your Next Linux Daily Driver?
「 Nitrux’s foundation is based on Debian, known for its appimage-based offerings. But what truly sets Nitrux apart is its custom NX Desktop environment. This tweaked version of the KDE Plasma desktop is a visual feast, incorporating Plasmoid, Kvuntum themes, and Maui Kit-based components 」

An nice article, especially for those newer to Linux, that discusses the basic.essential components of a Linux Distribution. Each one is discussed in detail by the article and gives a good overview of the separate pieces of software that come together to make an OS.
- Linux Kernel
- Init System
- Desktop Environment
- Display Server
- Sound Server
- Package Manager
- Additional Software Source
Manjaro 23.0 Uranos released
So I admit a certain degree of #FOMO with #NixOS. I tried installing it via their #Plasma #ISO #distro and it crashed on the install. What's the best way to install Nix for a newb? I want to be able to build this glorious config file for #ReproducableBuilds but where do I start with that? Any help is appreciated.
Question for the Linux nerds: What pre-installed CLI program would you run to view info about your system - e.g. OS version, kernel version, Processor, memory, display
Assume neofetch is not installed.
Is there something better than uname?
Include your distro in your response.
@zbecker @mattl #Linux is both a #kernel and an idea. The idea of a free #operatingSystem, abiding some concepts. What a #distro is called is up to the distributors. If that bothers you, write a license agreement that addresses this.
We should really ask ourselves why we're even having this Linux vs. GNU/Linux debate. Is it about GNUs visibilty? Is it about being more precise with our naming? Or is it about putting yourself above others? I have a strong feeling it's no. 3 for too many people.
Today, #Debian turns 30 years old.
A milestone achieved only by serious, concrete projects with clear objectives.
My journey with Debian began three years after its inception, and for the past 27 years, Debian has been a constant companion in my daily life. It has never let me down, both in its "pure" form and as a foundation for other projects like #Proxmox, etc. Even now, it remains my favorite Linux distribution (alongside Alpine Linux).
Happy birthday from the #BSDCafe community, Debian! 🎉

Try that with a #BananaPiZeroM2 that even people who do Computers for a living and teach in them can't even get the few systems that support it to run on anything but 720p60.
It's literally how I sync shit.
Bonus point: At 10W max this is affordable even at absurd electricity prices like in Germany...
#Google is increasing the speed of their #enshittification of even their #OpenSource projects like #Chrome with #ManifestV3 and #WEI and #Android stopping development for core apps like #Phone and #Messages.
#FOSS projects should stop relying on them for their codebases. I'd love to see @Vivaldi fork #Firefox and @calyxos base their code on a #mobile #Linux #distro and help break up the current #monopoly.
Google can't be relied on for any codebase.
anyone have recommendations for the best Linux distros for visual artists? preferably not just a reskin of Ubuntu for moral reasons (although I have started with Ubuntu because it was the only distro accessible to me at first). doesn't have to be super beginner-friendly as long as it has documentation.
#linux #art #distro
My secret to distro hopping?
Your /home directory should be its own independent hard drive.
I can wipe my whole system and install a completely different operating system, while keeping all my photos, documents, videos, downloads, and often many of my personal settings and configurations too.
In fact, I do not even need to sign back into any website either, because my Firefox browser settings, cookies, cache, and browser extensions are preserved.

Thank you so much, @fedora!
I started using #Fedora two weeks ago for the first time ever, and I am still figuring it out.
I made the silly move to start from #Fedora38, and I realized it is never a good idea to start from a beta version… 😬
I am lucky the release is coming out so soon, then!
Could you be so kind to share the steps I should follow to switch from the beta to the stable Fedora branch?
Please, tell me it is an effortless process 🙏🏼👀
Run YUUUGE #Manjaro update at 1 am, I told myself.
"What could go wrong?" I told myself.
Ugh. Running a backup now... will be wiping everything.
It hast to be able to run 12th-gen Intel hardware, because... glutton for punishment, I guess.
I'm mainly looking at arch and debian/ubuntu-based distros. I'm also thinking of switching from KDE to MATE. I love KDE, but man, the bugs are kind of annoying at times.
I am super proud to be a full-time @vanillaos user, and by watching these interviews I become even more proud and thrilled. Thanks a lot to all the contributors, and to the wonderful community!
I've been running kUbuntu for a long time but I'm getting tired of Canonical and their antics. It's probably time to switch distros. I really only have two requirements:
1. Good support for KDE plasma.
2. I have kids so it has to run Steam easily and well.
Any suggestions? Thanks!
I wrote a new thing! This blog post is dedicated to every Linux news site and blog (hi @d0od!) because I may have blatantly stolen a common format but with information straight from the source. 😈
But seriously, I hope this is useful both for existing and new potential users!
