I'm tiring of Ubuntu and Gnome, and would like to go back to KDE. What #distro would you recommend? For context, Manjaro is probably out since I have an Nvidia GPU and the last time I tried it, support for the GPU wass fine until it would break suddenly.

In the 1990s, I ran Red Hat
In the early 2000s, I ran Debian
In 2006 and since, I ran Ubuntu
The whole issue of snaps and privacy with Ubuntu has me looking for a new home, but:
- Guix's packages are often very out of date, making GuixSD a non-starter
- PopOS seems to not have any releases since 2022
I need a good general purpose OS for my laptop and everyday use.

I installed #debian and #vscode on my new laptop (on an external SSD for now). Of course vscode hangs at startup. Some posts say it can be fixed by deleting one of two keys from the key ring, but really?
I’m still tempted to try a rolling #linux #distro, but which one? I don’t want one that takes forever to install and manage, uses #xfce and doesn’t pre install hundreds of utilities and games I’ll never use. Oh and a nice theme too perhaps?

So for those asking, the #1440kB #Floppy Version of OS/1337 will be a better #Floppinux with #Ethernet & #Network support and packing in #Dropbear as #SSH client.
So you could at the very least use it as a #SSH #Terminal #distro...
Sadly this means it will require at least an #i686 and won't run on an #i486 anymore as a lot of memory was eaten up by #486SX workaround code in the kernel...
So I admit a certain degree of #FOMO with #NixOS. I tried installing it via their #Plasma #ISO #distro and it crashed on the install. What's the best way to install Nix for a newb? @zbecker @mattl #Linux is both a #kernel and an idea. The idea of a free #operatingSystem, abiding some concepts. What a #distro is called is up to the distributors. If that bothers you, write a license agreement that addresses this.
We should really ask ourselves why we're even having this Linux vs. GNU/Linux debate. Is it about GNUs visibilty? Is it about being more precise with our naming? Or is it about putting yourself above others? I have a strong feeling it's no. 3 for too many people.

A milestone achieved only by serious, concrete projects with clear objectives.
My journey with Debian began three years after its inception, and for the past 27 years, Debian has been a constant companion in my daily life. It has never let me down, both in its "pure" form and as a foundation for other projects like #Proxmox, etc. Even now, it remains my favorite Linux distribution (alongside Alpine Linux).

Whereas one can basically DIY a #Linux #distro for the #RaspberryPi just from the #LinuxFromScratch & #Raspberry Foundation's documation.
Try that with a #BananaPiZeroM2 that even people who do Computers for a living and teach in them can't even get the few systems that support it to run on anything but 720p60.

It's literally how I sync shit.
Bonus point: At 10W max this is affordable even at absurd electricity prices like in Germany...

Your /home directory should be its own independent hard drive.
I can wipe my whole system and install a completely different operating system, while keeping all my photos, documents, videos, downloads, and often many of my personal settings and configurations too.
In fact, I do not even need to sign back into any website either, because my Firefox browser settings, cookies, cache, and browser extensions are preserved.
So I asked RMS what he thought about the whole RHEL story, since he's one of the co-authors of the GPL, and his answer was that he's not reached a conclusion yet and that "it's complicated".

I'm coming from Pop_OS! Which frankly has worked FANTASTIC for the past 4–5 years for me, but it's getting a little bit stale?
Generally I prioritize:
- Software Compatibility
- Game-a-bility
- Development
Meaning it's mostly been #debian based distributions with the rare interjection from #Arch/#Manjaro, very little #RedHat influence (always struck me as "for corporate" over "for individuals"?)
