🎉 Exciting News from BSD Cafe! 🚀
After a long journey in my mind, the BSD Cafe project is finally taking shape. Registered the domain a year ago, and last July, I unveiled the first piece: our Mastodon instance. Since then, Miniflux, Matrix, and recently, our public Wiki have joined the family, inviting everyone to contribute.
The community's response has been overwhelming, far exceeding my expectations. It's clear there's a thirst for modern, decentralized, open tools to nurture our favorite BSDs and our community.
One early idea (also suggested by many) was a forum. However, existing BSD forums felt repetitive. I craved something more modern, decentralized.
After weeks of experimentation, I'm thrilled to announce another cornerstone of BSD Cafe: BlendIT!
https://blendit.bsd.cafe is a Lemmy instance centered on our beloved BSDs and more. For those unfamiliar, Lemmy is a decentralized, federated alternative to Reddit, compatible with ActivityPub. Meaning, yes, you can follow and interact with Lemmy communities from Mastodon and other Fediverse software.
Lemmy isn't just a Mastodon clone. While Mastodon excels in microblogging without algorithms, where old statuses fade into oblivion, Lemmy keeps everything organized, using algorithms to manage newsfeeds.
BlendIT aims to be a hybrid - a mix of a Forum, Wiki, Mastodon instance, and more - all seamlessly integrated into the Fediverse.
I've set up some basic communities where users (registration is open and manually approved like Mastodon) can create news, discuss, vote, and even follow communities from other Lemmy instances.
BlendIT (a play on Reddit, symbolizing the blend of our diverse BSD OS), like the Wiki, could become a vital tool for spreading information about our favorite BSDs - but only with your help.
Let me know if you encounter any issues or have suggestions. Happy registering!

I vividly remember when, less than 20 years ago, they used to ask me, "Why do you want to do this with Linux|Free|Open|NetBSD when it can be done with Windows? Everyone uses it!" Today, the question is similar but different: "Why do you want to do this on Free|Open|Net|DragonflyBSD when it can be done with Linux? Everyone uses Linux for this!"
The problem is precisely this: if everyone is doing it, do we really take it for granted that it's the best solution? I stay informed and have everything in production: all the BSDs and many Linux distributions, choosing the best tool each time, in my opinion, to achieve a result.
Why people always feel the need to conform to everyone and everything, and continue to decide what's better based on trends, personal beliefs, or social conventions, will forever remain a mystery to me.

Very much enjoyed the first #bsdnl day in Utrecht. Thanks @OpenBSDAms and others for making this happen!
@railmeat Depends, what do you intend to do on the system? Is there anything specific you want different from what you currently have? There is no best OS or best linux distro for every job, so its hard to give good recommendations without knowing the job. And even if you know the job a lot of solutions may be adequate and its purely preferential, lemme just throw a few into the room that you may want to try out and see how you like them: #Devuan, #Debian, #Artix (if you wanna deepen your knowledge), #Gentoo (if you wanna REALLY deepen your knowledge), #PikaOS (this one mainly just because a friend of mine is a maintainer, sorry not sorry), #Fedora, #openSUSE, maybe depending on what you wanna do, you may also wanna try other non-linux operating systems like #FreeBSD(or its derivates like #MidnightBSD), #OpenBSD, #DragonFlyBSD, #NetBSD or #OpenIndiana
The list goes on
Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the wider #Fediverse, the time has come: you can now sign up and contribute to the wiki! 📝
My hope is that it will evolve into a go-to resource filled with a wealth of information on our favorite BSDs, including guides, walkthroughs, and more. It aims to compile the myriad of articles and information currently scattered across blogs, how-tos, and videos.
As previously announced, we are using DokuWiki. I've set the main pages to read-only and established macro-categories: Reviews, Tutorials, and Users. The first two categories are further divided into subcategories (DokuWiki namespaces), one for each BSD. Additionally, every user has their own private namespace (to create articles, take notes, etc.) and a public page to add a personal introduction or whatever they wish.
Registration is open, but I ask for your assistance in content moderation since these "open" wikis can sometimes attract trolls and defacers.
I hope the Wiki will become a useful, powerful reference tool for many of us. I'll also soon create a page about the BSD Cafe project, detailing our goals, vision, etc.
We're waiting for you at https://wiki.bsd.cafe
As always, let me know (@stefano) your thoughts and how we can improve. I've already got two more steps in mind for additional services but still need to ponder over them... stay tuned!

🎉 Celebrating two months since launching the BSD Cafe! 🎉
Exactly two months ago today (20th July 2023), I released the #Mastodon instance of BSD Cafe, effectively announcing to the world the idea behind BSD Cafe. The response was much warmer than expected from both *BSD enthusiasts and the entire #Fediverse community. This overwhelming support motivated me to keep pushing forward, expanding the Cafe with new services.
We've introduced a wiki (https://wiki.bsd.cafe - currently a site describing the Cafe services, but in the future, it will also host tutorials, tips, experiences, etc.), a Miniflux server (https://miniflux.bsd.cafe - for personalized RSS feed reading), and recently, a Matrix server (https://element.bsd.cafe - for BSD Cafe users to chat in the Lounge, discuss various *BSD topics or interact with the world due to the decentralized nature of the protocol).
BSD Cafe will also be mentioned in the upcoming FreeBSD Status Report (https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-doc/files/12642300/Introducing.the.BSD.Cafe.project.pdf).
User numbers are growing weekly. Some stay active, some not as much, but one thing remains consistent among all: a passion for technology, free operating systems (especially *BSD), and a desire to collaborate and grow together.
So, a big thank you to everyone who contributes daily to make BSD Cafe vibrant and growing, those who offer advice, participate in polls, and believed in us these past two months. Without you, all of this wouldn't make sense.
Stay tuned! 🚀

Informal survey for folks who use BSD Unix:
1. Are you aware of any variety of BSD that has converted its base filesystem layout such that either /bin and /lib are symlinks to /usr/bin and /usr/lib respectively (possibly with several more such symlinks), or, the other way around, /usr is a symlink to /?
2. Are you aware of any variety of BSD that has concrete plans to make either of the above changes in the foreseeable future?
3. Are you aware of any variety of BSD that has considered and *rejected* making any such change?
I'm asking these questions in my capacity as /de facto/ maintainer of Autoconf. Your answers will help me document how to write third-party software that works correctly regardless of whether /usr is separate from the root.
[For the record, Autoconf already does, and will continue to, support both of the above altered filesystem layouts as well as the traditional one. The only exception I'm currently aware of is that configure scripts may malfunction or fail to start if /bin/sh does not exist at all, which I hope everyone can agree is a pathological case.]
Please boost for reach. Answers accepted either by replaying to this toot, or by email (zack at owlfolio dot org). It is helpful if you can provide references to release notes, mailing list discussions, etc. to support your answers.

🌟 Introducing BSD.cafe 🌟
Excited to present the first building block of the BSD Cafe project! When I registered this domain months ago, I envisioned a themed bar where we can casually chat about *BSD systems, Linux, and Open-Source technology among friends, acquaintances, and patrons. But like any bar, discussions can cover a wide range of topics while respecting everyone.
BSD.cafe will be a hub for various tools and services, powered by *BSD.
The first brick is a new Mastodon instance, a gateway to the Fediverse. Registration is open, and the server will be moderated under clear guidelines promoting good behavior and zero tolerance for hate towards anyone. Inclusivity, respect, and constructive dialogue are the key values of this new instance.
The main server is currently hosted in Finland on a small VM, based on #FreeBSD. Services are divided into VNET jails, connected in a LAN via a local bridge. A VPN system is also present and have been able to move individual jails to different, more powerful, machines.
Multimedia data and cache are hosted on another physical server (FreeBSD, within a jail), with Cloudflare in front. The aim is to cache and geodistribute data, reducing network traffic on the main VPS.
Reverse proxy (frontend), mail server, media server, and the instance itself are reachable via #ipv6.
The instance started empty. No unnecessary content was pre-loaded; I want it to grow organically based on users' interests and following. There won't be any preemptive blocks at this stage. Users are encouraged to promptly report anything they find worth flagging.
Join us at https://mastodon.bsd.cafe to build a constructive and inclusive community—a safe and relaxing space for everyone.
Our wiki, located at https://wiki.bsd.cafe, features essential links and articles related to the BSD world. It provides an overview of the tools, services, rules, uptime, and more information about the BSD Cafe Services.
A Matrix server, a Miniflux RSS Reader, the Wiki itself, and the BlendIT Lemmy instance are all part of the BSD Cafe services, with more to come.

I started with computers end of the 80ies, got attached to #Unix and #programming mid of the 90ies. Since then a Unix like OS is my daily driver.

Working in #InfoSec for >20y, heading a sec department at the largest German hosting company.
