As salt water continues to move upstream, additional communities along the river will be impacted, including New Orleans. The salt water is not likely to affect parishes upriver until mid- to late October. By late October, the salt water is expected to reach West Jefferson, according to the timeline provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Happy #Monday from the #Northland!

The #rain isn't over yet for some of us as the #low-pressure system continues to slowly move across the area.

It has been an impressive #rainfall since Friday, with nearly everyone seeing at least 1". For a few spots, this will likely end the #drought in their area.

#wxtooter #weather #wx #MNwx #WIwx #UPwx

The satellite and radar for the Northland around 2:15 p.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023, shows several bands of showers and a few thunderstorms continuing to move north/northeast.
Radar estimates for rainfall across the Northland since 12 a.m. Monday, September 25, 2023 have mostly been in the couple tenths-of-an-inch, with a few spots in Pine County likely seeing over 1-inch.
Rainfall totals since this storm system began to impact the Northland have included a few spots seeing 5 to 7.5 inches. They are all located in the area between Duluth and Two Harbors.

For the first time in five months, the #Northland is going through a wet September.

No place has been hit hardest with #rain than #Duluth.

Just a few slides to get this point across...

It is safe to say that for them, the #drought is pretty much over. Just need the monitors to catch up to the data.

#wxtooter #weather #wx #MNwx #WIwx #UPwx

A slide that shows that Duluth tied its record rainfall total for September 24 on Sunday with 2.96-inches, and it could surpass it if more rain comes before midnight. So far in September, Duluth has recorded 9.74-inches of rain. In an average September, it receives 3.48-inches. No matter what, Duluth will receive more rain in September than it did for the past four months COMBINED!. May, June, July, and August recorded a total of 7.97-inches of rain..
When looking back at Duluth's records for precipitation totals, which go back to 1871, 2023 is looking to be the second wettest September on record. Currently, it's 9.74-inches is only behind 1881's 11.52-inches for most rainfall for this month in recorded history.

“We’re destroying our springs to have lawns. How sad.”

In another gorgeously photographed feature, Dylan Baddour of @insideclimatenews visits the once lush, vibrant natural springs of Central #Texas, struck low by #drought and overdevelopment. Water experts say today's strained aquifers warn of tomorrow's emergency shortages: https://www.texasobserver.org/texas-aquifers-springs-groundwater-drought/

A lonely figure stands in a dry spring bed, usually full of gushing fresh water. There are drought-struck trees all around the "well" of Jacob's Well.

@gerrymcgovern Another article about #Spain and #Google: https://inspain.news/opening-water-guzzling-datacenter-in-empty-and-dry-spain/ and here's an interview why #AI is dangerous for the #water #footprint and #drinkingWater https://themarkup.org/hello-world/2023/04/15/the-secret-water-footprint-of-ai-technology
Every companie with #cloud service or using #AI uses horrible amounts of #water. Every film that we stream costs water! When we use a cloud we use water. #drought

@gerrymcgovern #Google #water #drought #drinkingWater #ecology #dataCentre It's not only there, Google placed a datacentre in an arid region in Spain and elsewhere. It is not only Google but everyone with cloud servers. The #ClimateCrisis won’t break our social systems all at once but it will tear away and erode them bit by bit.

#drought

"There's some real issues here [with] respect to consecutive years of drought … it's starting to mentally wear on people, and financially wear on them," Malmberg said.

#Beaumont #TX really wants you to know there is a #drought and to stop watering your lawn... unless you are in that TINY sliver between alert zones.

A Continued Lack of Rain and Excessive Heat has Elevated Mandatory Water Restrictions to a Level 3. The City of Beaumont is requiring all customers to conserve and discontinue water use for non-essential purposes, including landscaping, pools and more. Read More: https://beaumonttexas.gov/

From #TheTimes - photo of an article on #heatwave and #drought affecting food crops and how that is likely to lead to UK food shortages and rising costs. #ClimateChange #CropFailure #FoodSecurity #Inflation

Headline from The Times on 15th August 2023 reads 'Mediterranean heatwave risks adding billions to cost of food' above a picture of a man gesturing towards the camera while holding a fire hose. Another man is to the left in the image facing a fire burning on the ground and directing hose at the flames. Large trees are on fire in the background. Article basically say UK is buggered as they import so much food from countries around the Med like Spain and Greece who have been badly affected by drought and fires. Final paragraph has a quote from Gareth Redmond-King 'It's sobering to realise just how much we rely on imports from parts of the world most at risk from the changing climate. The heat we've seen in Europe this summer would be all but impossible without climate change. These impacts will worsen as we continue to burn fossil fuels and emit greenhouse gases, leaving the UK facing a future of more shortages and increasing costs.'

Not going to be able to irrigate our way out of the #ClimateCrisis

Really, are people not thinking this through. When there is less water available where is water for irrigation going to come from. Who is denied the water; probably the ecosystem which is already stressed.

Irrigating corn to turn it into ethanol is particularly stupid, but no one questions that.

Temperatures in Spain soar, again.

"The #heatwaves recorded in #Spain and wider Europe this summer have also worsened a prolonged #drought, lowering reservoir levels as #water evaporation and consumption increase and prompting authorities in Catalonia to impose restrictions."
