As a drummer, my #1 priority is maintaining time. I got called to play with a band last weekend that had 2 drummers before me that “could not keep time”. I did the gig without a rehearsal but did my homework learning 35 tunes in a week. After the gig, they asked me to join, which I excepted because they are a New Orleans Funk band (I love the second line groove).
A basic concept of drumming at any level….have fun but practice what you can’t do and always use a METRONOME.

Played three #baraat s this weekend including one at the Colorado Singh Sabha which is always a honor. More and more grooms prefer riding the route in souped up cars instead of on a horse, which is fine except it means I’m seeing less of my friend Jeannyne the horse handler. Couldn't agree more with the quote attached to this meme about how a good groove is what good #drumming is all about. Mickey Hart has said some profound things about the experience of drumming and I pretty much agree with them all. Best known as a rock n roll drummer for The Grateful Dead, he also had a deep love of, & respect for #djembes and other hand drums.

In a July 2022 interview he said: "There’s the idea of representing the drum in its glory, in its original indigenous form, played in the grooves that it was made for. There’s an argument for that and I’ve done that on many of my records. For me, in this moment, though, it’s not necessarily about a great djembe sound; it’s about how that sound moves me. By using that drum as the basis of operations that triggers some other kind of processing, I can take that djembe, or any drum, and transform it into an orchestra or something much larger or different."

On the topic of software #drums, the best app / VST I have come across for playing acoustic kits via an electronic drum kit is EZ Drummer.

I was put off trying it for a long time by the extremely naff name and the skeuomorphic interface but it is actually a very solid bit of software, the kits are really well recorded and usable, and it has some excellent features.
E.g. midi sequencer, mixer and midi input maps for most electronic drum kits.
They also make Superior Drummer which gives more control over sound design but is quite expensive.

For electronic drums or sequencing by mouse input I have found XO by XLN Audio very inspiring.

But there are so many ways to skin a cat.

Yesterday I remembered I had the Launchpad app on iPad and practiced #drums with it. The app is like a very stripped down and touch-friendly Ableton session view, basically a fun toy

The cool part is I can use it just fine with one hand, which made me realize I can play drums pretty decently using only one arm! Not at Neal Peart levels of shredding, but well enough to tap buttons on a touch screen at the same time. Skills levelling up, fun times!

During the summer of the George Floyd protests, in the first year of pandemic, my pony surprised me by sending a video of him doing a drum cover of Sepultura Refuse/Resist while in rubber and pony gear. Also klar, für weniger trainierte Schlagzeuger ist es sehr schwer, hohes Tempo lange präzise zu halten. Aber so oft, wie mir das auffällt, gehört es anscheinend auch ein bisschen dazu?

I also made the decision to purchase a drum set.

I was a drummer from 5th-12th grade, but didn't have a set until I entered high school. played in a band in school as well.

had to sell it for rent in '08. bought one with settlement money from a head injury in '11, sold that one in '12 for rent again.

decided it was time to have that part of me back. did a big reveal on stream for it. #drumming #musician #Persona5
