Encountered a few overly-online takes about professional #DungeonsAndDragons #GameMasters getting paid.
Most of them argue that #TTRPG experiences should be shared between friends for free.
Gives me vibes of "creatives shouldn't expect as much compensation as they ask. It is enjoyable work, almost a hobby."
Enjoyable work = work, & should be valued as such. Devaluing it is disrespectful to those that do that work for us for free.
Our friends are giving us all a gift when they run for us.
Rewatching Dungeons and Dragons. Oh man it is so much fun! Everyone is cast so well... this is destined to be a classic no matter what it did in the theaters.

I think the best DM tip I have seen for when to ask for a roll in #DungeonsAndDragons, is to ask for a roll when failure leads to drama.
Don’t ask for a roll if it’s possible for the character to succeed and the failure state is just that they failed. Only ask for a role when you have some thing dramatic in case they fail.
Example: they fail to pick open the door? The goblins inside hear them trying to pick the door and fling it open. Otherwise, just let them pick the door

Could also make it so that the level up doesn't happen until all the party members are successful in using new features three times. Makes it important for everyone to try their next level options ASAP for the good of the group.
Alternately, what I usually do is have players go through a bit of "training" downtime after leveling up, which is easier to implement. But it would be fun to have, say, a 1st level Rogue attempt a Cunning Action against a particularly dangerous enemy. If they can successful use a next level feature three times, then on their next long rest they level up!
I want to implement a leveling rule in D&D that allows players to attempt to use features from their next level, before they level up. I've always thought it was kind of dumb that characters suddenly know how to do new stuff; wouldn't they try it out while adventuring first?
The problem is ASIs and Feats. Can't have players trying out every single feat before they level up, but I sure as hell can't pick a feat that far in advance.

All of these dice are over 40+ yrs old, collected in the ‘80’s from various ttrpgs and games. In fact, the small white 6-sided dice are the oldest - over 60 yrs (originally bought by my mum). I’m so glad I kept all of these. Each is like a little history lesson in my hand.

Today I decided to give Pool of Radiance yet another shot.
1st ed #dungeonsanddragons rules can be a blast, when you know some of the basic idiosyncrasies.
I wish the game design here felt more primitive than it does, to be honest. Going on 40 years since this game first came out, and pretty much all CRPGs still do a terrible job of implementing non-combat gameplay systems.
Games like this are, unfortunately, what gave birth to so much of the modern problem with power gamers.

So. Here’s the thing: I loved D&D as a youth, although it’s been decades since I last played (but I still have the dice!). As a digital alternative, the only thing I’ve found that gives me the same joy are two games from Spiderweb Software: Avernum (6 separate games in the same world) and Avadon (3 games in the same world). Both give many, many (many!) hours of adventuring fun, and can be returned to and played again and again.
I’m considering trying Baldur’s Gate.
Tell me true, Mastodon: is it worth it?

I've been putting together a #FastAndFurious #DnD campaign.
The plot is stupid, makes very little sense and is held together by dreams and Spiderwebs, so it might be the most true to the source material that it could be.
Oh my, it turns out that there were even more people at this storied table! In addition to Matalas, Ryan, and DM Stashwick, the players included Mica Burton as well as writers Matt Okumura, Christopher Monfette, and Silvina Knight, in Stashwick's MAGNIFICENT "nerd lair."
This weekend brought us @JeriLRyan playing #DungeonsAndDragons with Todd Stashwick and Terry Matalas. The universe truly is full of wonder.

@slyflourish I made playlists from the different Elder Scrolls games. There is so much great music for every mood. I have playlists for: Suspense, Creepy, Action, Combat, Reverent, Epic, & Ambient. Having them from the same series helps keep a consistent “feel” & the music for the different regions (e.g., Skyrim, Summerset, Elsweyr) makes it easy to create different soundscapes based on where the players are.
