Każdy neutralny węglowo model zegarka Apple Watch spełnia następujące rygorystyczne kryteria: 100 procent czystej energii w procesach wytwarzania i eksploatacji produktu, 30 procent (wagowo) materiałów z recyklingu lub ze źródeł odnawialnych, 50 procent transportu bez wykorzystania drogi lotniczej. Projekty stymulujące przechodzenie na czystą energię elektryczną
Cała produkcja neutralnych węglowo modeli Apple Watch jest zasilana 100-procentowo czystą energią elektryczną – dzięki inwestycjom i poszukiwaniom źródeł energii prowadzonym przez firmę Apple i dostawców. Ponadto każdy producent części i składników używanych w tych modelach zobowiązał się, że do końca dekady przestawi całą produkcję dla Apple na energię pochodzącą w 100 procentach ze źródeł odnawialnych. Poza tym opakowania wszystkich modeli Apple Watch Series 9 i SE są teraz mniejsze i mają nowy kształt, który pozwala umieścić o 25 procent więcej urządzeń w jednym transporcie.
Jednocześnie Apple angażuje się w szersze działania na rzecz dekarbonizacji branży transportowej, m.in. poprzez inicjatywę First Movers Coalition i wspieranie badań nad możliwością produkcji ekologicznych paliw lotniczych. Firma pracuje nad innowacjami technicznymi, w tym zastosowaniem paliw alternatywnych i pojazdów elektrycznych, i wybiera dostawców, którzy oferują opcje o niskim śladzie węglowym, by jeszcze skuteczniej przyczyniać się do dekarbonizacji całej branży.

I remember when the world population hit the 7 billion milestone, which really wasn't that long ago (2011 in fact). So, the fact we've grown by another 1 billion people in such a short time is truly shocking, and scary. Remember, each human being requires huge amounts of fresh water, food and energy throughout their lifetime - the production of which has enormous implications for the environment. Indeed, just feeding this incredible population requires that vast swathes of natural habitat which would otherwise host a diverse array of species are instead destroyed and replaced with industrial-scale plant monocultures devoted entirely, and preserved exclusively, for the satiation of human appetite.
2. 𝗢𝗳 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵, 𝟵𝟲% 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀, 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗮𝗶𝗿𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀. Every non-human primate, from gorillas to lemurs, every giraffe and elephant, every dolphin, whale, and seal - along with every other non-human mammal neither a farm animal nor pet - all of them combine amount to just 4% of mammals living on this planet today! This alone is a perversion of nature, but especially so when remembering the horrific nature of the life experienced by most animals raised for slaughter, a brutal existence typically marked only by suffering, pain and then death at human hands. Nature can be cruel, but humans are - as a collective civilisation - far crueller and, for the most part, without mercy for their fellow sentient inhabitants of Earth.

Thus, without a long-term plan for the proper management of these materials, including their reuse, recycling or breaking down into their naturally occurring components at the end of their useful lives; no amount of green energy production will, on its own, create a sustainable civilisation living in harmony with the environment on which we all depend for our very lives. This is especially important to remember as the production of components needed for green technologies (everything from solar cells & panels to lithium-iron batteries) could itself lead to further catastrophic pollution of the natural environment if we don't take seriously the need for proper resource and waste management.
Just as our civilisation willingly, gleefully even, threw back into the atmosphere in just 250 years the amount of carbon it took countless millennia for ecological processes to take out; we are again failing to live up to the immense responsibility our great power over this Earth places upon us today. Our lack of empathy for non-human animals is truly grotesque. And we seem to have learned nothing from the grave mistakes of the recent past - with populations around the world continuing to elect climate deniers and those determined to preserve the privilege of today for a few more short years at the great expense of both future human generations and present non-human animal populations.
Of course, there is perhaps a somewhat poetic irony attached to all this. For if artificial intelligence has only humanity to learn from and is ultimately made in our own image; we ought to be very, very worried.

As we celebrate this, the most lively, longest day of the year, I bring some updates:
We've been extremely busy these last couple of months, getting some of the new plantings established and also just with other *life* things.
We've learned some valuable lessons and I'm extremely pleased to be able to share that everything we're growing at the Ranch is absolutely thriving!
Thriving, despite the water that is literally the quality of brackish seawater, we found out (we have filters for our whole house and for our drinking water, but learned that the whole house filter isn't cutting it AND that the hose spigots aren't going through the whole house filter since they were poorly set up).
Thriving, despite that the topsoil is literally just sand and gravel. For instance, on a whim I planted some sweet potatoes in sand in a spot where a hose spigot leaks, and they're sprouting, having only been given sand and the drip from the hose. My guess is they're able to thrive on the nutrients in the tuber itself, so we'll see what happens when those are used up. For now, though, it's extremely exciting to see things take root in such an apparently hostile environment.
There's also grass shooting up anywhere it can, anywhere there's water and a little shade. It's a good reminder that this is not a true desert, that this is just arid land and it is only desertified through human behavior. And especially as we read "Tending the Wild", on resource management by California's Indigenous peoples, it's inspiring to realize that we can reverse this state through careful stewarding of the land, as well.
With blooming sage and rosemary, mesquite and palo verde, date palms and oleander, prickly pear and beavertail, agave and aloe, there is an abundance of insect activity and wildlife. Crickets, grasshoppers, all kinds of bees, fascinating spiders, desert iguanas and really large lizards, ground squirrels and many more types of birds than we saw last year in the summer, all are flocking to the green, the wet, and the shade.
Birds are taking pomegranate seeds and depositing them around the desert, one of our mesquite trees is sprouting a small child next to it, our date palms are propagating themselves with little frond shoots and one is even growing teeny green dates despite the fact that we were told we'd have to hand pollinate them to make that happen.
We're celebrating abundance and giving offerings and thanks to this land all day today, culminating with a ritual this evening to charge a solar tattoo I'll be doing outside.

I just finished this book. It's 521 pages, 522 with the translator's note. I got it for a birthday gift at the end of 2003. I started reading it in earnest about six years ago. I took notes, looked up words, the whole gambit. Well, don't let my snail's pace dissuade you. It's completely wonderful. #Eco was a professional historian, a medievalist, and it shows. I'm in awe of the translator, William Weaver of Bard College.
