@stefan_hessbrueggen @mxp – This whole nonsense will only go away once we have a #citation #ecosystem where we just use #DOIs to refer to #publications and our reading tools present the rest of the #metadata to us. I think this will also reduce the importance of the venue (journal, conference). – But actually, it won't go away even then. Because of course we will want to display the metadata in the style WE want. So many of us will define our own new #bibliography style with unreasonable effort!

#Lawns are tricky. Wholly unnatural, fields of grass. But often enveloped in societal (neighbors, family, etc.) expectations.

And planting “native” plants doesn’t always really mean native. Often, depending on the #ecosystem, quite the opposite - invasives.

This study was interesting. A wildflower “lawn” = increased #biodiversity ( #insects, #spiders, #bats) and reduced #fertilizer use.

Whatever we do, it’s time to think differently about lawns.

Having my mind blown reading how passenger pigeons were #ecosystem engineers purely because of their flock size

Authors describe them as being basically living storms and wildfires. Where roosting would break off old branches and their guano would smother the plant life on the forest floor.

This was paired with the finding that much of the living #biodiversity in that region is highly disturbance dependent.

Crazy that we exterminated such a keystone species

"Brazilian researchers find 'terrifying' plastic rocks on remote island"

The geology of Brazil's volcanic Trindade Island has fascinated scientists for years, but the discovery of rocks made from plastic debris in this remote sea turtle refuge is sparking alarm.

Melted plastic has become intertwined with rocks on the island, which researchers say is evidence of humans' growing influence over the earth's geological cycles.

"This is new and terrifying at the same time, because pollution has reached geology," said Fernanda Avelar Santos, a geologist at the Federal University of Parana.

The discovery stirs questions about humans' legacy on the earth, says Santos.

"We talk so much about the Anthropocene, and this is it," Santos said, referring to a proposed geological epoch defined by humans' impact on the planet's geology and ecosystems.

"The pollution, the garbage in the sea and the plastic dumped incorrectly in the oceans is becoming geological material ... preserved in the earth's geological records."

Vast national park to protect native animals 🇦🇺

#Habitat for more than 50 threatened species will be preserved as part of a new land acquisition, becoming NSW’s 3rd largest national park.

The 437,394-hectare site, called Thurloo Downs, 250 klms from Bourke in the state’s north-west, contains globally significant arid zone #wetlands, salt lakes, playas and other geological formations unprotected elsewhere in NSW.

The area is home to #birds including the critically endangered plains wanderer, vulnerable pink cockatoos and the endangered painted snipe; #lizards such as the crowned gecko; #marsupials including sandy inland mouse and the stripe-faced dunnart, plus threatened plant species.

#Athabasca #University is a vital part of the #postsecondary #ecosystem in #western #Canada and beyond. Its #online courses often help #students complete #degrees at other institutions in a timely fashion, and provide #educational access to less-traditional students who may not be able to attend a brick-and-mortar institution.

This ongoing chaos is a disaster.

The Naga people have deep historic, cultural, and spiritual ties to their land, which they manage according to their customary tenure systems. One of these practices is called shifting cultivation or “Jhum”. The film by Resource Rights for the Indigenous People (RRtIP) and CDE, @unibern, highlights the importance of customary systems of #Indigenous peoples and the importance of Jhum for the Naga as the backbone of their self-determination 👉 https://bit.ly/3w5IuQc

’But what on earth does this have to do with #gardening?’ I hear you cry, in an exasperated fashion.

EVERYTHING!

Gardening is just one way in to reconnecting with our world, our actual, natural world. We are able to create *more* diversity of habitat & native species to support more life.

#NativePlants are better for #wildlife because a wider range of insects prefer to eat them, providing food for the rest of the #ecosystem.
