Have they simply stopped monitoring the logging of native forests in NSW?

"The NSW budget rejected any funding for a mandatory monitoring program of forestry operations. This runs counter to international standards. Suzanne Arnold reports on Australia’s forestry fail."

"The lack of funding came in spite of pleas from the critically important Forest Monitoring & Improvement Program, which monitors NSW native logging, and the 20 year Regional Forest Agreements."

"The Montreal Process Working Group framework underpins and is the foundation of Australia’s state and federal forestry approvals and operations. Scientific and legal evidence provided in reports, legal challenges, and other research provides compelling evidence showing Australia is in non-compliance with the entire MPG framework."

Here’s what Brazil’s Indigenous women taught ‘V’ (formerly Eve Ensler):

REFOREST POLITICS AND THE MIND…

To reforest politics means to engage in actions that heal, that regenerate, that highlight diversity, that understand that the biomes are our salvation. Our ecosystems are in catastrophic danger and Indigenous people know how to care for and keep them alive.

Restoration work at Maple Leaf Park (Seattle, Washington, USA) is focused on recreating the dry upland prairie that once covered parts of the Puget Sound region. Autumn prairies had abundant grass, bushy Douglas aster (Symphyotrichum subspicatum), Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis) and white clouds of pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium). Grasses here include a lot of non-natives, but do include Idaho fescue (Festuca idahoensis) and blue wildrye (Elymus glaucus)

Now however, NASA is teaming up with ranchers in Idaho to monitor beaver rewilding projects on small rivers, streams, and other watersheds by adding remote sensing data to a suite of tools used to monitor beaver activities, track dam location and water dispersion, and determine ideal beaver reintroduction sites.

Scientists assess the impacts of a warming ocean

Marine #heatwaves occur when #ocean temperatures in a given region are well above average for an extended period of time. Warmer ocean temperatures impact the marine #environment and associated #ecosystems, and ocean heat can also fuel developing tropical #cyclones.

Global monthly-mean ocean temperatures are currently at an all-time high relative to temperatures since the start of the instrumental record and potentially extending even further into the past, with 27% of the global ocean experiencing a marine heatwave as of August 15, 2023. The World Meteorological Organization recently announced that El Niño conditions have developed for the first time in seven years. Tropical Pacific surface temperatures are warmer during El Niño years as upper ocean heat content is redistributed from west to east across the Pacific, explaining the intense warming developing in the eastern equatorial Pacific.

The Last #IceAge shows how rising #SeaLevels will transform #coastal habitats

The study reveals that if global average temperatures rise beyond a certain threshold, the world could once again experience the rapid pace of sea level rise and coastal habitat retreat that occurred at the end of the Last Ice Age.

by Chrissy Sexton, August 31, 2023

"The results of the study show that higher global temperatures will trigger a rise in sea levels that will lead to instability and profound changes to coastal #ecosystems, including #Tidal Marshes, #mangrove forests, #CoralReefs and #coral islands.

"'Mangroves and tidal #marshes act as a buffer between the ocean and the land – they absorb the impact of wave action, prevent erosion and are crucial for #biodiversity of fisheries and coastal plants,' said study lead author Neil Saintilan of Macquarie University. 'When the plants become water-logged due to higher sea levels, they start to flounder."

"In the worst-case scenarios, these coastal habitats, will shrink - and in some cases wash away - as they have in the distant past, according to the study."

A Paris Agreement for nature?

Sydney will be the host for the first Global N a t u r e P o s i t i v e Summit in early October 2024. It is is concerned with the financialisation of biodiversity ecosystems.

"The “Nature Positive” agenda promotes the financialisation of nature – that there is a monetary value to nature, that this dollar figure could define all that nature means to us, and that we can start trading plots of nature like tokens and feeding into an ecosystem service that only benefits some people, in particular economies."

“The decision makers for all of this would be the exact same industry players and politicians who are destroying nature for profit now. Nature Positive” would be a bag of tricks for them to d i s t r a c t, d e f e r , and o b s c u r e their h a r m for n a t u r e : “destroying your forest is okay, because we’re not destroying someone else’s.” This is not only greenwashing, it is dangerous."

More bushfires in southeastern Australia due to climate disruption

What environmental and climatic factors influence multidecadal fire frequency?

"The complex spatiotemporal changes in fire frequency quantified in this study, and the complex between-region differences in the factors associated with the number of fires, have major implications for biodiversity conservation, resource availability (e.g., timber yields), and ecosystem integrity. In ecosystems subjected to repeated fires at short intervals, new rapid detection and swift suppression technologies may be required to reduce the risks of ecosystem collapse as high-severity wildfires increase in frequency."

Humans need healthy #forests

Supporting natural #ecosystems is an important tool in the arsenal of strategies we will need to combat #ClimateChange. But land ecosystems will never be able to absorb the quantity of carbon released by fossil fuel burning. Rather than be lulled into false complacency by tree planting schemes, we need to cut off emissions at their source and search for additional strategies to remove the carbon that has already accumulated in the atmosphere.

On invasive / non-native species, in response to https://twitter.com/majda72/status/1685669038033154048

I'm all for native plants and the reduction of invasives (ideally by them becoming food for something?), while also trying to operate from respect and understanding of non-native species. They didn't choose to be cultivated and domesticated in a foreign environment, or to end up as a seed on a truck or cargo ship traveling to a different climate/continent. This is a new frame for me, so I'm working on practicing it in reality — though there are cultures that have been integrating it, e.g. these perspectives and research from
Nicholas Reo and Laura Ogden.

Nice analysis of #Canada's forests using large-scale and long-term #data:

"#Tree diversity increases decadal forest #soil carbon and nitrogen accrual" by Chen et al (2023)

Quote: "...#conserving and promoting functionally #diverse forests could promote soil carbon and #nitrogen storage, enhancing both #carbon sink capacity and soil nitrogen fertility."

This is increasingly important to consider we impose larger and more frequent #disturbances on #forest #ecosystems.

Quote from figure 1 (flow chart) heading: "Variables considered in the model include decadal changes in soil C and N stocks (‘ΔSoil C stock’ and ‘ΔSoil N stock’), aboveground primary productivity, tree species richness, evenness, functional diversity, CWM trait value, long-term averages of mean annual temperature (MAT), long-term averages of mean annual climate moisture index (CMI), stand age and initial soil C and N content."

Why have the flocks of birds grown so much smaller? Why isn't your car covered in insects from summer driving like it used to be? The answer is probably: neonicatinoids. A pesticide that is far too widely used, often without evidence that it benefits crop yields. Even though it may also be harming humans, manufacturers continue to insist that it's fine, everything is fine.

14. Sledge hammers, mattocks, cold chisels. Two wheeled hand trucks, donkeys, sleds, carts. Cut highways up into manageable chunks, stack them up, free for the taking, along the road beds, and start building back the soil we tore off and hauled away.
We don't need "trees" or any other one thing. We need everything. We have fucked up #ecosystems til there's hardly shreds left. Every single one of them was built of carbon, and that carbon comes out of the air. Soil. Microbes. Leaf litter.

With less than a year to go, the Murray-Darling Basin Plan is in a dreadful mess. These 5 steps are needed to fix it
"The Murray-Darling Basin covers about a seventh of the Australian land mass: most of New South Wales, parts of Queensland, South Australia and Victoria, and all of the Australian Capital Territory. It includes the Murray River and Darling River/Baarka and their tributaries...."

Scientists sound the alarm over dramatic loss of 3 billion #birds in #NorthAmerica: ‘We’re watching … #extinction happen’

Story by Brittany Davies, July 14, 2023

"Since the 1970s, bird enthusiasts have watched the skies empty and heard the #birdsongs go silent as nearly 3 billion birds vanished in North America. Disturbed by the findings of an expansive body of research, scientists across the globe are sounding the alarm as half of the world’s bird populations are in decline.

"Found in every corner of the world from the snowy tundra of the #Arctic to the lush rainforests of the #Amazon, birds play a critical role in maintaining the delicate balance of their #ecosystems. Robust and diverse bird populations advance #pollination, help transport #seeds, and fertilize the #soil with their droppings.

"Observing and cataloging these fascinating creatures has long been a popular hobby and an important source of data for researchers and conservationists. Thanks in part to #CitizenScience reporting sites such as eBird, researchers have collected a wealth of information documenting the troubling decline of bird populations on nearly every continent.

"Peter Marra, a conservation biologist and dean of Georgetown University’s #EarthCommons Institute, and his colleagues studied multiple bird-monitoring datasets and found a disturbing trend. Using different methods to estimate population changes, Marra told Knowable Magazine, 'they all told us the same thing, which was that we’re watching the process of extinction happen.'"

However, the article goes on to say:

"Although the situation may seem dire, the news is not all bad. The tireless work of conservationists has restored numerous bird species from the edge of extinction, and populations of wetland species are increasing due in part to political action to protect their habitats. These stories of hope show that it is not impossible to reverse the decline.

"In addition to supporting wide-scale change and devoting resources to protecting #CriticalHabitats, restoring the bird population can begin in your local community and even your own #backyard. Take action at home by creating a #BirdSanctuary by growing #NativePlants and providing safe spaces for birds to eat, rest, and reproduce. Join a birding organization and participate in bird data collection.

"The knowledge shared across important crowd-sourced databases provides essential information to researchers on the state of birds."

This may all be for nought, of course, if the dangers posed by #Bushmeat continue to be ignored.

"#Ghana's batmen hunting for #Pandemic clues

"#Bats are essential to the world's #Ecosystems, but they are known carriers of several #Viruses. Humans are increasingly encroaching upon their habitats, adding to the risk of new pandemics, so #Scientists are studying bats [on] how to prevent any new #Outbreaks..."
