They recently laid off their Kenyan team consisting of 180 people. The team was being paid absolute shit, have no savings, and have been barred from re-submitting applications. They have a fundraiser that is currently only at 7% of its goal.

Meta obviously hasn't learned from what happened in Ethiopia. In 2020–2022, an estimated 385,000–600,000 (the conservative count) died in the Tigray war. This war was largely fueled by a desire for ethnic cleansing, which was exacerbated and spread by Facebook posts. These posts containing hate speech would have been caught if Meta had an adequate content moderation team.

At issue was the accommodations for religious employees required by Title VII.
A postal worker wanted Sundays off to observe the Sabbath, causing lots of issues.
My best guess is that Supreme Court will probably expand the ability to get a religious accommodation, but will not radically remake the law.

the new employment code being drawn up by the Govt. says a policy of 'fire & rehire' should only be used as a 'last resort' when changing #employment conditions... but offers no actual ban.
One doesn't have to be cynical to see that #employers will always likely claim firing & rehiring is a last resort;
without actual prohibition, the #Tory Govt. is just offering a justificatory narrative to toxic employers, not a good faith attempt to protect #workers!

I'm retired, so I'm not as in-the-know about the job market these days, but here are what I hope will be a few words of encouragement for anyone who is looking for a new job...
One thing people often don't realize is that "there is a lot of competition out there" doesn't mean you're not any good.
When I was a search chair at the university where I taught, I often had a situation where I had 50 candidates who would have all been great for a job...and only one job opening to fill.
Don't get discouraged. The reason you get turned down for a job often has nothing to do with you or whether you're good enough. It's just not your turn yet.
Good luck. Never give up.
