How did I not know until today, that Sunderland's old 'North Dock', now Roker Marina, was designed by the legendary engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunell?
Thought I knew all there is to know about the place I call 'home', then I learn that this Victorian legend had a hand in shaping our city.

After being on the job market for close to 3 months now, it's with a sigh of relief and a rush of excitement I can finally see the full-time occupation of doing job interviews to an end.

Starting gently now in June, and full-time in September, I'm joining Ludenso as VP of Platform Engineering!

It's been a wild and educational ride, and I've met with so many interesting companies, but in the end, I chose to go with Ludenso for the ability it gives me to improve the fields of teaching and learning – especially in the classroom. Having a daughter who says she hates school is naturally a strong, personal motivation.

It's been a long time since I was as enthusiastic about work as I am now. I'm eagerly looking forward to the adventure this surely is going to be!

I know not everyone doing an engineering degree is actually planning to be a professional engineer, but “how to know what the requirements are so that you design things so that are legal” seems like something that really should be addressed.

"Students about to enter engineering colleges usually select one or another of the major branches and then after graduating begin to specialize. But infrequently Fate has much to do with this specialization, since after leaving college the average young engineer will turn to the nearest or most promising vacancy offered him in his chosen field—a major branch—and in the work eventually become expert and a specialist." I had Covid-19 a couple of months ago for the first time, and while in my recovery state, I started watching Grey's Anatomy, which my friends have had a lot of fun teasing me about. I'm still going through it now (there are a lot of seasons), and it only just struck me this morning why I might still be guilty-pleasure watching it... The hospital is a lot like IT engineering groups. There are those that show empathy for the patients (users) than others. There are those that are almost single-mindedly focussed on the deep technical challenges (jargon, processes). There are those that take risks and are celebrated when they succeed. And, there's the need for being on-call and responding with calm in emergency situations. The list goes on... I guess I'm enjoying it as a parallel to the work that I've done for many years and the types of engineers I saw. (Note that I'm not comparing saving lives through tricky brain surgery as equal to ensuring that mail servers are running smoothly). It makes me ponder what each industry could learn from the other. One is that there appears to be a systemic and formalised path for juniors (interns) to be taught and grown to higher skill levels. I've done a lot of mentoring in my IT career, but I don't think it's nearly as common as it should be. #medical #engineering #sre #greysanatomy

A question I’ve been wondering about in my reading of job ads (because layoffs are still potentially on the horizon and it doesn’t hurt to see what’s out there, so I’m told).

What’s the level above Senior engineer called for non-US big tech, while still remaining an individual contributor who writes code? I know these things aren’t standard but what is it for _you_?

“For the first time in a vacuum environment, NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston has successfully extracted oxygen from simulated lunar soil, paving the way for the utilization of resources available on the Moon to sustain human presence and exploration. This process is known as in-situ resource utilization.”
