Using Huggingface and Mozilla Common Voice, I trained an Esperanto speech recognizer. (https://huggingface.co/xekri/wav2vec2-common_voice_13_0-eo-3) You can try it out on that page!

It's my first attempt, and uses 10% of the data available. This is not meant for transcription, but for language learning verification, so someone can respond to a prompt in Esperanto, and it will compare what they said to what was expected.

The important measure is Character Error Rate (2.1%). Now training with twice the data...

Where do #Esperanto words come from?

It took me 20 minutes to find the Etimologia Vortaro de Esperanto by András Rajki (2006). It took me 20 more minutes to turn the PDF into a text file and evaluate it with python. And 20 more minutes to visualize it with #LibreOffice.

It features only about 4800 entries. The linked version does not contain his remarks. I am paraphrasing:

• András Rajki focused on Zamenhof's native languages: pol, rus, yid.
• Zamenhof was very interested in Lithuanian and German and learned the other languages mentioned in the diagram; except Dutch. András added it deliberately.
• Greek and Spanish are heavily underrepresented deliberately.
• Non-indo-germanic languages like Aramaic and Hebrew would occur but are left out.

My own remarks:

• There are better databases, but András' one was easily accessible to me.
• I normalized language identifiers to ISO 639-3. For Greek, András only looked at Ancient Greek references (grc, not ell).
• A rigorous approach would put Spanish into the Top 3. I even expect it at the first place.
• To quote Pierre Janton “More than 75% of the lexemes are taken from Latin languages, in particular from Latin and French, and 20% from the Anglo-germanic languages, the remaining include loan-words from Greek, above all scientific ones, Slavic languages and, for a very small proportion from Hebrew (amen), Arabic (alkazabo) and Japanese (anzuo), etc.”

I love to stand on the shoulders of giants in an open community like Esperanto's. It was so easy to satisfy my curiosity about this dictionary.

To ask someone to create a language that included elements from all languages across the world is simply unrealistic. What writing system would it use? Which direction would it read? How would its grammar operate?

Fascinated with and starting to dabble in #tokipona, then started thinking well, if I'm going to learn a constructed language #esperanto is more likely to be practically useful... But then if I'm going for practical usefulness, Spanish would be the most useful language to me by far.

I think I'll continue to focus on toki pona for the moment. Part of the appeal is that it's so tiny (137 words!) that it shouldn't take long to learn.

English and French are unnecessarily difficult languages. I wish we had a better international standard. I wish Esperanto were more widely known and used.

The hard truth:

Every economy with a declining birthrate that is then dependent upon immigrant labor and attracting the brightest minds to out-innovate other economies should be enthusiastically welcoming people fluent in the world’s most common languages instead of sulking about not being as popular.

After a certain point English had no competition in the US, so no need to inforce it legally. Now that Spanish grows in certain areas some people push for that legal enforcement...

My point, which was not specifically about the US, was that languages impose themselves by force, demographic, commercial, legal or whatever, but people don't peacefully agree on fair language switches, otherwise we would be having this discussion in #Esperanto :P

Gosh I wish #Esperanto was a thing in my circles. It’s so neat!

Angesichts zunehmender #Flucht und #Migration - sei es nach Naturkatastrophen oder zB für #Arbeit in einem anderen Land - halte ich es *wirklich* für sinnvoll, wenn *jetzt* alle #Kinder weltweit beginnen könnten #Esperanto als "Brückensprache" zu lernen.

#Erwachsene natürlich auch, aber Kinder eben bereits im #Kindergarten und #Schule, so könnten sie es frühzeitig #lernen und anwenden und damit aufwachsen.

Warum?
Weil es die #Verständigung mit #Menschen im neuen Land sooo sehr erleichtern würde!

Und weil die #Sprache recht einfach zu erlernen ist!

Das könnte zB über die #UN koordiniert werden.
