Earlier this year, I designed and facilitated an online workshop that was marred by technical difficulties. Luckily, it didn't matter.

The German polymath, geographer, naturalist, and explorer Alexander von Humboldt was a meeting designer way ahead of his time!

https://www.conferencesthatwork.com/index.php/event-design/2023/11/alexander-von-humboldt/

#Humboldt #meetings #MeetingDesign #science #history #events #eventprofs

Alexander von Humboldt: Humboldt was revolutionizing the sciences. In September 1828 he invited hundreds of scientists from across Germany and Europe to attend a conference in Berlin.* Unlike previous such events at which scientists had endlessly presented papers about their own work, Humboldt put together a very different programme. Rather than being talked at, he wanted the scientists to talk with each other. There were convivial meals and social outings such as concerts and excursions to the royal menagerie on the Pfaueninsel in Potsdam. Meetings were held among botanical, zoological and fossil collections as well as at the university and the botanical garden. Humboldt encouraged scientists to gather in small groups and across disciplines. He connected the visiting scientists on a more personal level, ensuring that they forged friendships that would foster close networks. He envisioned an interdisciplinary brotherhood of scientists who would exchange and share knowledge.

Over the last 20 years, the Washington Speakers Bureau has brought me into many events as a keynote speaker. As one of the pre-eminent bureaus in the world, it's always a thrill to work with them on various projects.; I value my relationship with them so much! (They're one of about 40 bureaus that book me, though this is one of my favorite relationships)

With that, they have just published a custom blog post I wrote for them on the future of AI and all things legal.

You want to give it a read. You know that everyone is talking about the upside of AI. But what about a hard analysis of the downside risk? That's where I go in this long analysis. Read it and share it!

And think about what it means for your company, association, and conference event. And then - reach out to the folks at WSB to learn how you can bring me in for a realistic talk on the perils and opportunities of what is unfolding.

Also, they just signed Alex Rodrigues, and so between him and a few others, I'm in wonderful company. Pinch me moments every day!)

Here's a thoughtful and well-informed analysis of the current state of in-person and online conferences.

Although @remotesynth concentrates on developer conferences, I think hIs conclusions are relevant to the #events industry as a whole.

The State of Developer Conferences

Brian Rinaldi | Tuesday, January 31, 2023

I ran my first developer conference back in 2007. It was called Flex Camp Boston and it was a 1-day, single track conference all about Adobe’s Flex, which was growing in popularity at the time. I planned it in about 90 stressful days, but was fortunate that tickets were sold out weeks before the event.

Since 2007, I’ve run or been involved in running a lot of in-person developer conferences in Boston, Miami, New York, Orlando and even Sofia, Bulgaria. Some I ran independently while others I ran for my employer. I’ve been fortunate that, in all but one case, which was an event I ran in Orlando weeks before the pandemic shut down, they have all been successful, even if they didn’t sell out capacity.

I’ve also been involved in running virtual events for developers since 2017 including a number of virtual conferences beginning in 2021. My most recent was just last week.

I share all this background because I hope that it lends some credibility when I tell you that I am concerned about the current state of developer conferences.

@josh I like these standards. And we need 'em.

But the elephant in the room is the mask exception for "attendees who are actively eating or drinking". Yes, this could be "robust" when outdoors or with excellent ventilation/filtering in place.

But in practice, event social activities are when most #COVID19 infection occurs.

(Also, dancing while wearing masks, is rare IME, so I wonder if "robust" would apply to many events with an evening social with music.)

A modest proposal for an #eventprofs alternative to Twitter, LinkedIn, & Meta—a better place for us to meet, convene, & converse online.

@mmasnick When Twitter Spaces were first introduced, me and my friends in the #eventprofs and #assnchat worlds were excited to use them for chat. We quickly abandoned them because they were glitchy as hell. Your tweets, or everyone else's, suddenly wouldn't appear. Sounds like nothing has changed.
