The Accelerated Christian Education curriculum referred to in Robert's post - which frames teaching in the context of literal biblical interpretation, denying #climate #science & #evolution - is currently used, according to one source, in 129 private #schools in #Florida.

This is from a 1972 ad for a school using "ACE":

The ACE curriculum "provides an educational atmosphere void of fear and association with drugs, crime, sexuality, godlessness, and socialistic-communistic ideologies."

#creationists often like to trot out how "even IF #evolution were true, it wouldn't shake their faith" in their god.

OK.

Well it is true.

So why don't you go ahead, accept it, believe it, and then try to make sense of it? You know, like you do with whatever scientific/historical/other inaccuracy you find in the Bible... If it really doesn't matter to your faith... Accept the fact.

#Thunderbird’s UI is really growing on me. I quite like the tabbed view. And I wonder how I have coped so long with #Evolution’s lack of full conversation view. (There’s loads I love about Evolution; if it has that one feature, I doubt I would have experimented with Thunderbird.)

So, yes, a successful experiment so far.

I need to find a way to export just Thunderbird profile settings and not messages, to help set up other machines.

@stevieoberg Well thank you for taking the time to let me know nothing will shake your faith that your god did something, at some point, as described by however science describes it.

I'll simply leave you with this. If your god is behind #evolution, hats off to him, but there's nothing to indicate humans are anything but evolved primates. And while science doesn't know how life started (either), however life began, it evolved—with the appearance of it being natural. Faith, huh? 🤷🏼‍♂️

@stevieoberg I find "theistic evolution" extremely convoluted. I mean did Yahweh—because that's the "God" they're referring to—simply create DNA knowing that eventually it would get to humans, or did he have to intervene here and there to push it on the right direction to achieve "his image"? (Both of which operating under the assumption #evolution has an end goal... us.)

Today in Labor History May 25, 1925: The state of Tennessee indicted high school science teacher John Scopes for teaching his students the truth (i.e., teaching evolution). He eventually lost his trial, was fined $100, and then won an appeal. However, the law he broke, the Butler Act, was ruled constitutional by the state supreme court and remained in effect until 1967. For years now, 20 U.S. states have followed the Next Generation Science Standards for their first-year biology courses, and nearly every state offers the College Board’s AP Biology curriculum, in which Evolution and History of Earth are considered central and unifying principals of biology. At the same time, however, teachers are being threatened with termination and legal action in some states for simply uttering the word “gay” or “homosexuality,” or for neglecting to report students they suspect of being nonbinary. For decades, we have been mandated reporters of suspected child abuse and sexual abuse. Now, many of us are in the contradictory position of being required to report LGBTQ kids, with the consequence that these children will be subjected to abuse by the state.

On the surface, this looks like #cladistic nitpicking, but in reality it is a revolution in the tree of life. Because they lack neuromuscular cells, sponges were classically presented as the sister group to all metazoans. But the sister group could well be the ctenophores, which leads to two scenarios: either several independent evolutions of neuromuscular cells, or a deletion in the sponges.

Speaking of #dextral and #sinistral #snail shells, they often occur via co- #evolution with #predation:

“Asian snail-eating #snakes (Pareas) have more teeth on the right mandible and specialize in predation on the clockwise-coiled majority in shelled snails by soft-body extraction. Snails have countered the snakes’ dextral-predation by recurrent coil reversal, which generates diverse counterclockwise-coiled prey where Pareas snakes live.”

Figure 4 from the paper. Quote: “Left-right reversal of handling behavior in Pareas carinatus according to prey handedness.
(a) Handling of a dextral snail (Cryptozona siamensis). (b) Handling of a sinistral snail (Dyakia salangana). Left and right mandibles are inserted into the aperture in reverse relative to the structure of shell whorl while the upper jaws hold the ventral outer surface (umbilicus side) of the shell.”

In that arena, we'll need sizeable positive uses of the latest tech as alternatives, or the early adopters (who are not typical slices of society) will acquire too much leverage & #power.

The good news is that as a #system that's in a far-from-equilibrium state, a phase change can be initiated from small changes in conditions. (See Margaret Meade's famous quote.)

The post-WWII era near unanimous consensus narrative of corporate employers (latest iteration of the Benevolent Dictator fallacy) being critical to a free democratic society has declined in every generation since (~20 yrs). This model now fights for a 1/4 of the support it once had.

The #network narrative is coming up from the opposite direction, already with a majority. What has yet to happen is the passing of the 'investment' phase as the driving force, which is always followed by more public & wider #QualityOfLife motives.

This is a layered effect, built up incrementally with each specific new use case or advancement. #Language skills combined with search & internet servers loaded with shared data- these '#AI #ChatBots' -is just the latest layer in the long march of human social #evolution.

This is a fluffy and breezy wander through some of the oddities thrown up be evolution. It's also well illustrated and, luckily, most of the picture suit eInk very well. Of great interest to me were the tantalising asides - for example, a formerly enslaved man taught Darwin th…
