Just a few paragraphs of Sartre in the public library, driven there by someone somehow suggesting that a view I had was existentialist (used as an accusation) and a journey through the encyclopedia entry for “existentialism” to the name “Sartre” to some collection of his essays and perhaps an introduction to the concept that we are condemned to be free—if I wasn’t an existentialist when accused I became one at that moment. And simultaneously a permanent atheist though I have lapsed sometimes, trying so hard to believe some metaphysical notions but eventually always choking in my own bad faith.

I hated his idea of freedom but I found it undisputedly true. It was so obvious and undeniable and I didn’t want it to be true. It was horrible. It took years to develop the strength to face it but the could see the truth if the argument immediately. (but not that many years, by 21, I could, and by 25 I was comfortable with it)

While making pie, I’m listening to a recent translation of Stirner’s _The Unique and Its Property_ on text to speech. I keep having to pause so I can underline bits. Not since I read Sartre as an 18-year old have I felt so uncomfortably seen by a philosopher.

I think, in terms of #existentialism, why the whole #newatheism is such a failure is its adherents seem to want to declare themselves enlightened simply by rejecting obviously untrue traditional beliefs. I finally saw the #BarbieMovie, and I'm kind of glad I saw it alone, because I cried a lot.

Art and literature after the flu #pandemic didn't directly address the flu, but it was there in the background, and #Barbie feels like that with #covid19 and with #ClimateChange—who are we and what does life mean now? What does it mean to be human when the parties, popularity, validation and shiny, fun distractions are stripped away? Yes, there's a lot of privilege to having those things to lose, but we still have to #grieve the loss and build not just a new world but new selves. We're in a very #existential moment.

Also, okay, yes, the movie is very #Feminism 101, but given that the point is that we haven't even achieved that, I think #feminist films are worth celebrating.

And the soundtrack is great. I'm going to go listen to "What Was I Made For?" and feel my Feelings™️ for a bit and then listen to #Aqua's "Barbie Girl" because it's fun!

The kind of existential questions I often ask myself…

What would it mean if humans are the lone intelligence in the universe? If there are no aliens, no gods, no conscious AI waiting to emerge in the future? Well, it would mean we’ve got a lot more responsibility, for one. Nobody’s coming to the rescue. It’s on us to fix this mess.

And I think that’s probably a big part of what drives the belief that we’re *not* alone — not because the evidence is particularly strong, but because of how intimidating the prospect is.

That’s what I find when I look within myself, anyway. When I ask myself “What if we’re alone in this?” the very first response that comes up within me is, “Ah shit.”

Because think about what that would mean. Not only would it mean we’re permanently on our own when it comes to fixing all our massive problems, but we’ve also got a massive responsibility not to fuck this all up. If we’re the only intelligent life in the universe, then we’ve actually got a serious responsibility to try and preserve that life.

I mean, if we wipe ourselves out with nuclear war or environmental collapse, or with some other wonderful technology-based emergence we haven’t invented yet, then that’s bad enough by itself. But if on top of that we also wiped out the only intelligent life in the universe, it’s almost infinitely worse, no? It means we didn’t just inflict that horror upon ourselves, we inflicted it upon the future of the entire universe.

And I think that’s probably what drives a lot of the belief that there’s something else out there. The fact that we’re all kind of intimidated by the responsibility which would come with our being alone.

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957) plays with the understanding of what it means to be acknowledged as a human, and one's place in the world. The story is told through the eyes of the titular Shrinking Man – Scott Carey – who after being exposed to strange fog, finds himself increasingly lost in this world.

It's phenomenal and I can only recommend it.

Let’s get personal, shall we? I’ve been here a while now, and as I’m feeling quite comfortable at Mastodon, I’d like to share a bit more about myself beyond my passion for the climate and the environment.

To begin with, I’m a male, he/him, hetero, strongly supporting LGBTQ rights. I’m a baby boomer, born at 312 PPM 🌏, a United Statesian, although I lived in Europe (mostly Hungary) for several years, and traveled extensively for work before retiring in 2012. I’ve never been good at sustaining long-term romantic relationships, and I’ve finally settled into comfortable singlehood.

I like to say I’m made of contrasts.

For example, I’m rather funny and quite personable, but I don’t enjoy small talk and I hate parties. I currently live in the Bible Belt, but I’m an outspoken atheist. While I can easily fit into most social situations, I don’t feel comfortable around large groups and prefer being alone most of the time. I live near two huge military bases, but I detest the USA’s militaristic, troop-worshiping culture. I’m almost always cheerful, which masks my deeply felt existential nihilism. I’m a neat freak, but also rather lazy, preferring fun over work.
