Nothing else gives the impression more of ‘Made by a committee’ to me, than the latest update to Monzo’s #UI with Pots and #Savings.
There’s now a separate overview screen for your card, and it now requires way more presses to reach Savings and Pots.

Just a very frustrating #experience.

As I revisited my notes today, I stumbled upon a small piece that I wrote while leisurely enjoying the surroundings outside the Luxembourg Palace in Paris. The written note on the experience did not seem extraordinary at that time, but reading it now takes me back to that particular moment as if I’m reliving it all over again.

I recall the serene atmosphere of the garden and the feeling of relaxation as I spent time there. These images, combined with my reflective note, transport me back to the leisurely day I spent outside the Palace, appreciating its beauty and the unique ambiance of the surroundings.

"Here's some peaceIn the noise of the cheery crowd,The kid's gasps,The crunch of stepping shoes,The hustle of tree leaves,And random voices, many around,Not loud, not silent,In languages—French, Italian, or many others,The collective chatter echoing the same thing,That everything here is perfect."

That evening, we saw a lot of people just chilling and having a good time with their families. Many were reading books while lying comfortably on a chair, some played chess, some strolled around, and others just sat in the sun, chatting. Every family deserves a break as such from time to time. It’s fortunate for the people in Paris to have such a beautiful place to relax and enjoy their time.

So glad to be back in Perth, Western Australia. In reflection I've had time to laugh over my recent experience in Sydney but it took a little time.

Last week I spent 2 days at a face to face business meeting with a Not For Profit organisation I am involved with. So, let's spend a day in Sydney to break up the travel: it took me a while to recover from the 4.5 hour flight over. Sydney threw on it's best November blue skies and I got to see all the sights.

Then came Saturday which turned into what's best described as a domino effect of misfortune.

Wake up at 6.00am to a message saying my flight's been cancelled and rescheduled to the following day. Crap: my brother's 50th birthday do is that evening in Perth. Can I get an earlier flight? Yes, in 10 minutes...the airport is 25 minutes away. Better find somewhere to stay for the night as my hotel is already fully booked and it's Saturday night in Sydney. Hotel found but the power keeps shorting out so time to change rooms. Go to the Museum: cloak room gives me ticket with the number, wait for it, 13. Let's explore the largest cathedral in Sydney: no, someone's got a wedding on. Oh wait, the new Lego Store has opened and I was going to miss it as I was supposed to be flying home. Let's join the queue to get in then to the minifig custom printing service to make a present for my brother's 50th which I was missing. 2+ hours later and 3 people from the end of the queue the printer breaks down. Sigh. Get to the airport ready for the flight home: entertainment system on said plane breaks down. 24 hours later when unpacking my bag discover I've left a pair of hiking trouser somewhere at the hotel.

Got another trip likely to Sydney in a couple of months. Let's see what I can do to top that!

Sometimes you have to stimulate the technical immune system of the team via concrete ill-thought-out proposals in order to provoke the kind of detailed focused attention that you need. There's nothing better than provoking the irrepressible impulse of opinionated technical folks to not just let bad things stand.

In other words, sometimes bad proposals are the best way to end up with good results!

I never understood the request for "empirical studies" to prove this or that in software development, e.g.:

"Show me an unbiased experiment with measurable outcomes that proves that TDD makes a dev team more productive. Until then, I'll continue doing what I do now."

Let's flip that around:

"Show me an unbiased experiment with measurable outcomes that proves doing [whatever your current process is] makes a dev team more productive than doing TDD."

Unless you can do those experiments (which are extremely difficult to do), you can't use the claim that since there is no "TDD works better" study, that means that it _must_ be worse than what you're currently doing. That's what philosophers call an "appeal to ignorance".

TDD might be worse; you might have a great process! (In which case, I'd love to try it out!) On the other hand, TDD might be better, and you're missing out on improving. Without the (possibly impossible) empirical evidence, you have to try it and see.

I read a useful post by @kissane , where they asked people on Bluesky about what their negative experiences of Mastodon had been. I recommend you read it

(though perhaps not if you're a qual researcher, some of the epistemological assumptions may drive you round the bend 🤣😫)

The main issues reported by people were that:

- they got scolded, usually for failing to use content warnings
- that they couldn't discover or easily search for people to follow
- it's confusing to have multiple instances
- it's too serious
- people are being denied features like reposts in the name of safety, rather than being treated by adults.

Separate to Erin's work, I asked a similar question on Bluesky last week and received a much smaller, but consistent set of responses (see the screenshot).

We should take these issues seriously. Mastodon should continue to aspire to be a safe place, in particular people who are marginalised on the basis of race, gender, sexuality, disability and poverty. Many of the complaints identified by Erin are, at least in part, reflective of deep concerns about the safety of users.

One of the things that I did not expect to happen in transition is the return of teen awkwardness. Because, you think, around 40 you should have some experience with people under your belt, learned to get a read on situations, make better decisions. In some situations, retreat is the better option, even if going all in just feels so good.
And I was wrong about that. Oh, so wrong. Maybe it's the HRT, maybe the general break of chains. But you get high on life, can't handle the load of emotions, and just like a teen, you make awful decisions with people. As if all your experience is wiped off the board, and you start over.
But you don't. In the calmer moments, or after shit hit the fan, you look into the mirror, and can tell yourself, exactly, when, where and how you messed up. That you already knew how this would go, that you've been down this path, and also that other, better path that you decided against with a manic grin on your face. Because in this new life, you absolutely can build a castle in the clouds!
A teen doesn't have that. They make that experience, learn, and grow. It's pretty humiliating to have that again a few decades later, because it makes you feel like you learned nothing. You can't just go, well, do it differently next time, because that's where you've already been, and here you are again. It makes you distrust yourself, your experience, your knowledge, your ability to make decisions. I don't know how to regain that confidence.
For all the good that transition has given me, some things went down that did more than scratch the paint. And while I don't hold it against anyone involved personally, I still feel myself clam shut when talking to someone new, and keep them at arm's length. I'm really sorry for anyone trying to get to know me these days, and even more for anyone feeling attraction. #trans #nonbinary #transition #experience

From 12-year-olds to 82-year-olds, including people from every decade of life in-between, it's interesting, fun, and so worthwhile to hear responses to our spring questionnaire. The work to gather their input has been so worth it; we appreciate the time and care each respondent put in to sharing their experiences and ideas about the joys and challenges of #cycling!

On June 4 we finished transcribing audio responses. Next we'll do other tasks toward sharing everyone's responses.

We've decided to publish several topical posts highlighting the responses all summer, instead of only a single compilation post. We will also publish a PDF with all of the first responses.

I don't want to simply share #photography / #landscapephotography.

I once realized that I would never achieve the quality of professional landscapers who go out in inhumane times to grab ONE great shot. I tried – but it did not bring me satisfaction. I primarily go out for #hiking, grab the #photos during the tour and try to bring the whole hiking #experience to the people following my journey.

—Who are we?—

Research in the Icelandic Vision Lab (https://visionlab.is) focuses on all things visual, with a major emphasis on higher-level or “cognitive” aspects of visual perception. It is co-run by five Principal Investigators: Árni Gunnar Ásgeirsson, Sabrina Hansmann-Roth, Árni Kristjánsson, Inga María Ólafsdóttir, and Heida Maria Sigurdardottir. Here on Mastodon, you will most likely be interacting with me – Heida – but other PIs and potentially other lab members (https://visionlab.is/people) may occasionally also post here as this is a joint account. If our posts are stupid and/or annoying, I will however almost surely be responsible!

—What do we do?—

Current and/or past research at IVL has looked at several visual processes, including #VisualAttention , #EyeMovements , #ObjectPerception , #FacePerception , #VisualMemory , #VisualStatistics , and the role of #Experience / #Learning effects in #VisualPerception . Some of our work concerns the basic properties of the workings of the typical adult #VisualSystem . We have also studied the perceptual capabilities of several unique populations, including children, synesthetes, professional athletes, people with anxiety disorders, blind people, and dyslexic readers. We focus on #BehavioralMethods but also make use of other techniques including #Electrophysiology , #EyeTracking , and #DeepNeuralNetworks

—Why are we here?—

We are mostly here to interact with other researchers in our field, including graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and principal investigators. This means that our activity on Mastodon may sometimes be quite niche. This can include boosting posts from others on research papers, conferences, or work opportunities in specialized fields, partaking in discussions on debates in our field, data analysis, or the scientific review process. Science communication and outreach are hugely important, but this account is not about that as such. So we take no offence if that means that you will unfollow us, that is perfectly alright :)

—But will there still sometimes be stupid memes as promised?—

Yes. They may or may not be funny, but they will be stupid.

The good thing about big, rich #academic #publishers like #SpringerNature is that they have the #experience, #budget, #developers, and economies of scale allowing them to provide top-notch #infrastructure for their #scholarly #journals, right? Right?!? – Why, then, does neither SpringerNature's submission system #SNAPP, nor their LaTeX #TexLaTeX template, provide any possibility to submit the #ORCID for authors? – By the way, no-budget @jcls has #ORCID and #ROR in the template, of course!
