My mom rarely remembers my name any more. She told my aunt on the phone she can’t believe she’s about to turn 56 (she’s 85). She asked me where my sister’s husband is today, thinking I’m my sister (we don’t look alike). She told my hubs the docs are insisting she eat more yogurt (she’s seen no docs in a month). She forgot she has cancer and asked me why she can’t walk.

Her decline is coming at us quickly, but she managed to crack a joke yesterday that made total sense.

Let me introduce you Eileen Howard, a young swimming champion. She participated at 1928's Olympic Games in Amsterdam, she also performed as an artistic swimmer in a movie, as a mannequin, as a circus artist and nominated "most beautiful eyes of England" in a competition in 1932. She also was in good relationship with queen Elizabeth. She was a terrible cook and probably not the most loving wife nor mother.

But to her I was "The Sun, the Moon and the stars".

#Family stuff here - On Monday, my spouse tested positive for #COVID19. On Tuesday, my youngest child started showing symptoms, so I picked them up from school. Spouse is better, but not 100%. Youngest is still having a rough time of it, even though they’ve tested negative just yesterday. So that’s left me running the household. I’m not going to make a joke like inmates and asylums or anything - I am a capable adult. But it really sucks when those you love are suffering and there’s really nothing you can do about it.

So, prayers/positive thoughts/good vibes/etc. are appreciated if you are so inclined. And I hope your day is going swimmingly!

Caught on film is our family's legendary side eye -- leveraged the most when surrounded by cis het patriarchal Baptist nonsense (as we were that night - we came home from being out and our father had some of his church guys over the house. I believe this was the night someone told me I'd want kids once I had them. Assssssssss.)

I’ve been #TechSupport for my #Family for as long as I can remember. I’m sure many here can relate. Today a thing happened.

My mother-in-law was asking a couple setup questions on her #iPhone. Before I could answer, my teenage daughter jumped in and said ‘I’ve got this’ and had it handled.

Friends…let me tell you…I have never been so happy to pass a metaphorical baton in my life.

I feel like I should warn her about what she’s just done to herself…but she’s young…she’ll learn. #Parent #Kids

Thinking how dictators, like #Turkey’s #Erdogan, are like abusive parents — I recall I’d cringe when #Egypt’s Mubarak would refer to himself as ‘our father’.

Like abusive parents, they humiliate & oppress their ‘#children’ behind closed doors, shaking their confidence & gaslighting them, then put on a fake smile & share fake #news with the world that all is well & we are one big happy #family…

I don't like it at all when people apologize, say "that's so sad" or some variation, "she must have loved you", etc when I talk about how I'm estranged from my mother. The truth is, I'm glad I am! It's one of the best changes in my entire life that's ever happened, and I don't see things ever changing.

I want to counter the narrative a bit that estrangement from a family member is always this sad thing, because for me, it really was and is happy and good. There has been so much relief and improvements to my health with the estrangement, so much extra room in my life opened up to just live to my fullest extent ever since then, and I don't regret it at all.

The estrangement made me stronger, happier, healthier, better. Not broken, damaged, or someone always doomed to be messed up about it. I think it's time that as a society we broaden some of the narratives we have around estrangement

i used to think of codependency as "2 people who are dependent on each other way too much so that they become overly-enmeshed."

but once i learned about the term's origins in the world of substance addiction, it made more sense: in a family or relationship, the "dependent" is the one who is dependent on a given substance (aka "the addict", but can also be "the narcissist", etc.). the co-dependant is the significant other, or a parent, or some other family member, who is the main person dealing with the fallout of the addicted person, helping them, carrying them, taking their abuse, & whatever else.

in this short video, our ole pal patrick teahan talks about codependency as being about keeping the ship floating at all costs. and you know what, i love this description. it definitely describes my mom (who is the main co-dependent with my narcissist dad) and hopefully it will be a helpful framing for you as well.

Enjoyed a fun morning with my son and his family at the Carolina Tiger Rescue kids tour. They have a couple tigers rescued from the 'Tiger King' folks, along with many animals that were rescued from unscrupulous breeders or surrendered by individuals. Highly recommend if you're in the area!
