Extreme Value Adding - Patterned Sheep by Joan Stratton - Four black and white patterned sheep with black faces and legs, roam the paddocks of dried summer grasses while a cheeky Australian Willie Wagtail bird is perched on the barbed wire fence. Value adding to farming produce can be a tricky business but this farmer has bred wonderfully patterned sheep.

Hand-drawn painting / graphic illustration from scratch based on my sister's sheep which are a mixed breed of Suffolk and Merino plus the mischievous Australian Willie Wagtail which is the largest of the Australian fantails. Indigenous mythology is that the Willie Wagtail loiters just at the edge of the camp, close enough to listen in on secret conversations, that they later spread about just like their wings.

for no reason, tonight i'm once again thinking about the "russian cyberfarm." i've seen this video so many times & i *still* think it's funny. i was born in the former soviet union, and this is about as accurate a representation as you're gonna get 😂

also, i think anyone with a #farm or #homestead or #offgrid will recognize a lot of the situations portrayed...

#Farm to #Taber

"This episode traces the origins of today's #food system back to its origins: #slavery, and most importantly, #JimCrow. These institutions laid the foundation for northern #agriculture, where "nice" little family farms that grew food for #plantations. Both regions were oriented towards large-scale #export commerce, self-sufficiency played surprisingly little role, and this helps explain why our food system looks the way it does today."

I found this scene rather interesting as the tumbleweeds were slowly taking over. I showed this photo to my step-father (it’s his family’s farm) and he found it funny that I was so interested in a manure spreader! :)

Black and white photo of a very old manure spreader with tumbleweeds swarming it.

According to my uncle, this end of the house was the bedchamber. Naturally, I assume that the tree here therefore is our family tree. 😁

A moss-covered stone wall foundation with a tree growing out of the middle. It's surrounded by green grass, lush forests and a cloudy sky in the background.

These are the remains of the old farmhouse on our family farm. The buildings were abandoned in 1944, when the new house and barn further down in the valley were ready.

My uncles and aunt, grandad, and many generations before, were born here. My mom was born in the new house.

There isn't much left of the main house, only the walls. But my uncle (89), who was with us on this Sunday walk, showed us where all the rooms used to be. 😊

A little farm and garden update for the homies:

One of my favorite things about the #farm is that every day is pretty much a different experiment.

The mason jar filled with flowers is my attempt at making lilac oil using the #enfleurage technique. After steeping for a few weeks, it should be ready to go.

The meat photo? #capicolla! It's going to be vacuum sealed for a week, and then it shall go hang in my cellar with the #bresaola I've had hanging for two weeks now.

And the garden-- I've got everything in this photo planted except those buckets along the back wall. I'm building a raised bed for watermelons back there, but right now the buckets are back there as storage because I don't know what I'm going to use them for (or plant in them) yet. They'll probably end up going between the back fence and the big bed in the middle. If you have any ideas, let me know!

The next step aside from the watermelon bed is to finish laying cardboard out to kill weeds, and then cover it with wood chips and level everything, so it doesn't look, well, like it does in the photo.

Also, if you havent figured it out yet... I'm in my cottage core era now.

“We never planned it to be this big! We just wanted to grow some cabbages and bring some children down to do some bushcraft and bring the community together..."

It started with just four volunteers from a tiny Transition group and an idea to take over a disused, publicly owned farm for the community.

Now Greenslate Farm is home to a care farm, drug and alcohol recovery service, dozens of rescued animals, a strawbale cafe, farm shop, forest schools, nature rangers, a community project incubator and so much more...

We cannot wait to see it for ourselves - and you can too - at our North West Regional gathering 10-11 June. Transitioners and everyone working for community-led change in the North West welcome! Book now: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/625220470257

in my garden, we have very little soil (0-4 inches of organic on top of solid lava rock) & the soil tends to be acidic.

in the past, i've been told to spread lime to bring up the pH. i found a half-used bag of lime in my shed & started to sprinkle it as top dressing, but then i thought: is this harsh chemical going to kill the soil microbiology ecosystem i'm trying to cultivate here? it must, right?

What did the first farmers actually #farm?

Eight 'founder crops'—emmer wheat, einkorn wheat, barley, lentil, pea, chickpea, bitter vetch, and flax—have long been thought to have been the bedrock of #Neolithic economies.

But early #prehistoric sites in Southwest Asia keep turning up more 'exotic' (to us) species, like the sedge tubers mixed into the earliest known breads (https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1801071115) or the 'new glume wheat' (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jas.2020.105258), an important ancient crop that's now extinct.

one of the things i love about gardening is how specific it is: you're taking care of specific plants, in a specific place. "now i take care of *this* tree. now i trim *these* bushes. i take care of *this* ecosystem."

i don't have to make generalizable solutions. i just have to help these specific plants grow :}

More than 100 children are killed each year on all kinds of farms, according to national estimates. They fall off their parents’ laps while riding on tractors, get crushed by the heavy metal buckets of skid steers, suffocate in grain silos. Thousands more are injured.

No national system tracks all farm injuries and deaths, but researchers with the federally funded National Children’s Center for Rural and Agricultural Health and Safety maintain a database of these incidents using information gathered primarily from news reports and obituaries. The week of Jefferson’s death, at least three other children were killed on farms across the country, including a 14-month-old girl who was run over by a horse-drawn wagon about an hour north of the Breunigs’ farm.

Suriname cherry is covered in blossoms right now, I will make preserves with the bulk of them once the fruit is ripe.
And also: this is the first year that my loquat tree is big enough to finally produce fruit! So excited! #TropicalAgriculture #FoodForest #homesteady #hoodsteading #fruit #trees #hawaii #farm #plants

hi folks, this question concerns growing #orchids outside in a #tropical climate.

i've read that one should try to remove any rotting/melting/old parts of the plant, but it seems like some of these orchids are just fine with the moisture & decomposing material provided by these old parts of the plant.

i made a video to show my situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oedv_ma6dWM

any advice would be appreciated <3

All my #museum photos are from the "Maison Rurale" (rural house) in northern #Alsace, where I volunteer.
Unfortunately, the website has lost other languages (= could be better): https://www.maison-rurale.fr
If you like to visit this restored place of the 17th c, it is a #farm #museum (#FarmLife at the beginning of the 20th c until the 1950s) and at the same time a #CulturalHeritageCentre with special #exhibitions and #workshops. At the moment we present the #history and #CulturalHeritage of #sewing.

Extreme wide-angle shot of the museum section. From left to right: The church tower of the village with half-timbered houses in Alsatian style. The main farmhouse was rebuilt from ruins by a Bohemian family in the 17th century. (After the 30 Years' War, farmers mainly from Switzerland and Bohemia were recruited to the depopulated areas.) The entire complex was restored by regional craftsmen. Under the long chimney, the distillery and laundry. Next to it barn buildings, among others with a pigsty and rabbit hatches. The tiny roofed room by the dung heap is the outhouse.

There is nothing like the LOVE of a RESCUED animal. A friend of mine calls donkeys "long ear'd therapy". It's true. When you support me, you are helping us keep up our farm and all of the creatures that have found shelter here. :)

Because I was still on the mailing list for some reason, let me remind you to NOT BUY from #BakerCreekSeeds because of their blatant support of right wing ideologies and white supremacy.

Better options: High Mowing Seeds, Sow True Seed, Heritage Seed Market, Alliance of Native Seedkeepers, Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Fedco Seed.

yesterday i started working on a #zine about #katuk (Sauropus androgynus).

art is hard, y'all!! i've included the original pic below, along w/variations i made to try & show the plant more clearly. i think i like the black & white outlined one the best (good for a bw zine).

i plan to hand these zines out with any katuk cuttings i sell at farmers' markets! they will include info about how to grow & eat it 🥰

By May 17, 2020, the border areas of the #farm fields at Waltham Fields Community Farm were a #forager's paradise.

Beyond this wealth of edible weeds are some of the farm fields and beyond them are a few structures. On the left are including the rain-cover rooftops used by the Boston Area Climate Experiment (http://www.ecosystems.umb.edu/BACE/. On the right is the farm's high tunnel.

#foraging

In the foreground is a grassy area, rich with broadleaf plantain and dandelion. Some of the dandelion is still in flower, some has gone to seed. In the background are farm fields, the closest one covered in white plastic. Beyond the fields are a few buildings, including the farm's high tunnel (to the right) and a long inactive brick smokestack.
