@ichris I've been using reader as my main RSS reader and feel like that part of the app isn't that quite "there" yet.
Ive been tagging posts by categories (i.e. #css, #favourite, #javascript, #devops, etc), but haven't found myself going back to reference much yet besides a basic "oh what was that thing again".
Would also be interested to hear what others are doing.
One thing I find kinda weird is how if you look at a popular toot that's been boosted a few times, often the number of likes is fairly low.

Here it is. The latest track I’ve released, and the first video clip I’ve ever done. It is, of course, Space Pop (feat. Kaaren Elizabeth Smith).
Kaaren is a long time friend who I used to co-host a weekly karaoke night with, at a small town bar called The Reef back in the 90’s!!
One of the goals of the Dgar Project is to write new songs, and record them with friends that I have some kind of music related history with. When I got the opportunity to record with Kaaren, I took it.
Kaaren, on the day, was amazing. I sent her a demo of the track to practice and listen to a week earlier. She did some really quirky takes. It’s all her voice too. There’s no auto-tune. There’s no pitch correction. It’s all her. So much fun.
The “doo doo doos” she does was originally a melody I played on a distorted electric guitar. On one of the takes she does these “doo doo doos” over the riff. It just sounds so cool, I replaced my guitar track with her vocals.

I personally feel one has to be careful with #boosts because they can annoy one's followers.
Also there is a feature missing in #mastodon where if a single #toot is boosted by multiple followers, it shows up multiple times in a user's timeline.
When should I #boost? When should I #favourite? How do I save a post?
How do any of these features work.
#Mastodon is different to other platforms in that there is no algorithm or analytics. Getting the most likes on a post means little here.

How I use #favourite ⭐️, #boost 🔁 and #bookmark 🔖 on #Mastodon.
⭐️ favourite: I want to tell the author I liked what they posted. Maybe it made me laugh, or it was useful to me. Sometimes I just mean “seen”.
🔁 boost: I endorse that message, and I want it to spread to more people. It’s probably either useful or interesting/funny. This is something I would forward to a friend.
🔖 bookmark: I might want to get back to this in the future.

1. Read the rules on your server and follow them.
2. Post what you want but please use the content warning (CW) ability

5. Post / Pin an #Introduction about yourself and use hashtags
6. If you've got questions, ASK.

The favourite button confuses me. Is it meant to do what the name suggests - i.e. “favourite” or save a toot? Or is it for showing that you like a toot that someone wrote, much like elsewhere?

So it's been 1 week on Mastodon for me. Things I've learned so far:
Do an #introduction post, fill it with hashtags of interests.
Have something in your bio so people can read about you
Follow (& unfollow) liberally
#boost makes posts more visible to others, #favourite saves them to your favourites.
Use alt text on images
Use #bookmark to save threads you want to follow
#CW subjects like politics, sports or common triggers
Replying to yourself creates a #thread
Remember, unlike the #birdsite, your #actions directly #influence the #toots we all see on #Mastodon.
You and your #hashtags are #TheAlgorithm!
If you enjoy a toot, clicking #favourite lets the author know. But the #BOOST button is the way to allow your #followers, and those on your local #instance, to have the chance of enjoying it too.
And if you want others to discover your toots in their #searches, make sure #KeyWords in your toots are #hashtagged.
Just a subtle reminder that on #mastodon #favourite or star icon will only tell the writer of the toot that you have read it.
In order to show this #toot to your other followers you will have to #boost or click the #recycle icon.

Another regular reminder. Marking posts as #favourite (aka likes) work different than on Twitter and Instagram.
On Twitter you can view someone's liked tweets on their profile. The original poster and sometimes your followers get a notification that you liked their/a tweet.
On Mastodon the original poster gets a mention of your #favourites, people on your server/instance can see (if they look carefully) it under the favourite icon directly under the post and you can see posts that you have marked as favourite on your personal favourites page/tab.
On Twitter and Instagram favourites/ #likes are fed to the hungry algorithm. 👾 On Mastodon we have no algorithm, only a simple way to calculate trending posts and hashtags, if your server enabled this.
To #favourite posts from other #instances is currently a bit annoying.
I don't know what technical limitation exists that can't be transparently solved without that little window, but I hope this is being worked on.
These are the kind of tiny usability jarrings that can push people out of a platform.
