1: I know that Spirit of the Beehive is the title of a Spanish #film, but wasn't there an 80s #band of the same nyame? (That's how I first encountered the title.) Apparently, there's an active American band with that nyame too. I'll listen to them later.
2: Right now, I'm in a total Michele Zauner zone. She's a pretty fantastic all-around artist. Her music, whether just Japanese Breakfast or also including Little Big League, ranges in style and variety. She's even done #soundtrack work for #VideoGames (Sable). In addition, she also wrote a (well-received) memoir and directs really good music #videos. I'm thinking about her today, because her cover of "Head Over Heels" by Tears for Fears is fantastic. I mean, I like the Gary Jules "Mad World," but this is even better.

I've been participating in the Google Opinion Rewards for some time now. Today I'm asked whether I recently saw a movie online called Within Our Gates, and I said yes. Now, Within Our Gates is a 1920 silent film by the Black producer and director Oscar Micheaux, and it deals with the racism of the time. So when the next question was, "Was the film fun?" how was I supposed to answer? No, the film was really good, especially for its time, but it wasn't "fun."

In "2010: The year we make contact" a receptionist is reading Time magazine. Fictional events of the 2010 timeline are portrayed as an escalation of the rivalry between the US and the USSR. On the fictional magazine issue, one side is represented by Arthur C. Clarke, and the other by Stanley Kubrick.
This film is only loosely based on the "2010" novel by Clarke, and Kubrick didn't participate at all. Only Keir Dullea reprises his role as Dave Bowman.

The Woodcutter Story, 2022 - ★★★★½
I've seen this film described as Kaurismäki-meets-Lynch a lot and initially i was rather opposed to that notion, as this is a pretty uniqe film of its own that doesn't need to rely on such comparisons.
Yet with a bit of hindsight, it makes a lot of sense aswell. We've got our deadpan and quiet characters just trying to survive in face of some almost biblical, apocalyptic shit being thrown their way which accounts for the Kaurismäki vibe.
On the Lynch side of things, in addition to a few suspiciously surreal sequences and visuals, there's also the vaguely lynchian notion of a community becoming the pawns in the games and whims of some mysterious higher power. Be it some actual deity or just the gears of corporate power taking advantage of them... and what does it matter to them which is which, really? It feels very much the same to those in the midst of - and trying to make sense of - it all. An intruguing little film, this one.

"The children are grumpy"
I finally saw 'The French Dispatch' and enjoyed it -- not as much as I enjoyed (actually, loved) 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'*, though, but it has its moments. The first and especially third segments were my favorites, and I've got to admit I was disappointed with the middle (youth movement).
I was actually really looking forward to that part as I'd like to have seen a Wes Anderson treatment of a student uprising, but it came out surprisingly pedestrian IMHO. The slogan was actually the best part.
The third segment gave me the touch of pathos I was hoping for, but it was gone too soon. At any rate, great cast and a fun film to lose myself in for a time, but overall rather uneven.
* I loved 'The Grand Budapest' so much I bought the movie (if you want unexpected pathos in a funny and chaotic story, you'll get it in spades with this film)

“La Jetée” is the legally acknowledged basis for “Twelve Monkeys,” of course. And I truly love them both. But an equal debt must be owed to “The Last Flight of Dr. Ain” by Alice Bradley Sheldon (née James Tiptree Jr).
It’s hard to believe the screenwriters didn’t read that short story. Add Marker’s film and it is #12Monkeys. 🤔

I have now seen 5 of the Harry Potter movies. Still don't like them, and I am struggling. Thank goodness the next re-watches I do, will be the Back to the Future franchise. At least they are a fun watch. I want to see the Micheal J Fox movie, 'Still' and want a refresher on the films first.

I saw a short film years ago, maybe in the early 2000s. I was explaining it to someone earlier. I have tried off and on to find it, but I have been unable, so I'm putting it to film buffs who may be familiar with it. It's called "The Boundary" with Alexander Siddig (from DS9). The director is Julius Onah.

ME/CFS also has a big impact on our way of working as a #film collective. We have to very carefully plan what we do & where we put our energy. Travelling is a lot more complicated and often not possible at all.
