TLDR: Final Fantasy XVI is a masterpiece with serious pacing issues.
It is rare for me to pay full price for a game, but after trying the demo of FFXVI, I was waving my credit card. The unusually dark and violent story grabbed me immediately. And even though the battle mechanics didn't pull me in immediately, I bought the game on release date, hungry for more.
After three months (including a break of a few weeks), and 65 hours of playing, the credits rolled. Finally.
"Finally." That doesn't sound good, does it?
The story being told is great, I love it! The grim atmosphere of the first hours is being maintained throughout and it is a true rollercoaster. It is rather complex though, because there are a lot of things going on, there are many characters that play a role in a very grand scheme, and there is a large focus on political happenings. I've seen people compare it to Game Of Thrones, but I can't confirm that since I haven't watched it. Luckily there's a contextual encyclopedia during each cutscene that explains the setting and relevant characters should you need to remind yourself of the details.
The battle system is a huge departure from the earlier FF installments. The series left its turn-based roots a long time ago, but this time, the party system is also abandoned. That's right, you only play with Clive, the protagonist of the story. Sure, you have companions during the story, and you can give orders to your best friend Torgal, the cutest dog. But that's all. As Clive, you gather various abilities as you deal with Dominants and their Eikons (the summons that FF players are familiar with, such as Ifrit and Shiva) and as such you can shape the way you engage in battle. Unfortunately, you can only have a maximum of three Eikons active, which doesn't give you too much flexibility. Nonetheless, the action is tight and fluid, and it always looks great! Wow! I often paused during battle to use the photo mode.
Besides the main story line, the world is filled with side quests. Lots of side quests, many of which are the run-of-the-mill fetch quests that feel empty (as often in FF games). Only a few of them are worth it, because they use the lore in an impressive way or because the reward is very well worth the effort. Other than the regular side quests, there's also a monster hunt board.
In the second half of the story, some weird choices have been made. Not so much in the story itself, but the gameplay in between feels dragged. Lots of walking, talking and forgettable battles make the game feel a bit like a chore at that point, especially after doing some side quests as well. It's also at this point that the battle system starts to feel repetitive and that's when I decided to push through and finish the main story and abandon all side activities. A good choice because the game would continue to throw (boss) battles at me, and it would still be a while before I'd reach the ending.
"Finally". The game's biggest flaw is its artificial length. It has a negative impact on both the story and gameplay. Should the main story be 20% shorter, I would give this game a 9/10. Because there's so much to love. There are some EPIC battles that just overwhelm with beautiful graphics and the most bombastic music you'll ever hear. The world looks beautiful, the cast is interesting and I love the attention to detail in about everything.
One last thing I would like to mention is that the game often doesn't feel like an FF game. The story, the setting and the battle system are quite different from its predecessors and it is only because of familiar elements such as Chocobos, the summons and the characteristic enemies that you are reminded of playing a Final Fantasy game. I wouldn't mind part 17 to return to the series roots a bit more, but I have to praise how fresh and relevant this part feels as well.
Despite some of the issues with this game, I am happy to have played it. Because at the end of the day, it's a masterpiece. <3

How they are presented, in voice work and story role, also feels a little wh40k, in that all of the kingdoms have a bad vibe and there aren’t any totally good groups.

Been a while since I posted here! I’ve moved states, completed #FinalFantasyXVI, and started #BaldursGate3. FF16 was such a great experience. Clive is such a cool character! I’m too early in BG3 to say much, but I love what I’ve seen so far. On the tabletop front, my #Shadowdark game has really picked up and the open-table concept has worked out great. We’ve got 9 different players in the campaign now and 6-7 of them are regulars playing every week or two.
So here I am, not entirely disliking, but not really loving some of the biggest releases this year:
- #FinalFantasyXVI’s combat became tiring
- #DiabloIV is quite alright but lacks impact
- #Starfield feels like a forced quantity over quality project
I should probably stay away from #BaldursGate3. :-P

Started #Starfield now that I have #FinalFantasyXVI wrapped up. With my RTX 3070 and damned-near-4K ultra-wide monitor I am getting around 40fps on planet, 55-70fps indoors, and around 45fps in space. Not bad at near 4K on medium settings.
Now to get the DLSS mod working so I can get those minimum frame rates up some.
#FinalFantasyXVI complete! 41 hours. Missed some side quests in the beginning, but I can use New Game+ to run through those at some point.

Completed #FinalFantasyXVI !what a ride! Really good strong main story, solid characters, superb music and ambience, top graphics and very engaging combat system. It's true that I found other aspects of the game a bit tedious like some of the secondary quests and also few bit empty scenarios. A linear crafting system is other its flaws but the other good aspects makes the game worth it. The fights with the Eikons have forged some epic moments for me. This game will stay with me for a while.

Still managed to play #Diablo4 in online coop for almost 53 hours, but dropped #FinalFantasy16 after around 14 hours.

Re: #HumbleBundle. If you aren't actually skipping a month, say you're skipping a month anyways. Then take the $4 off coupon they throw at you to stay. 8 games for 8 bucks is an acceptable price.

Naoki Yoshida announced the initiation of a PC port development for #FinalFantasyXVI, along with two paid DLC expansions on the way.
Finally Square Enix has acknowledged the inevitable, #FinalFantasyXVI for PC has begun development, confirming that the timed-exclusive for PS5 ends late this year.
No release date yet, but it will launch along 2 DLCs, one being an expansion to Valisthea.

I enjoyed it overall. At one point I thought it might be one of the best games in the series, as its high points are just that good.
And that's credits for Final Fantasy XVI. :)
I finished with mixed feelings, with its spectacular highs dragged down by some really dull sidequests and a rather mixed spring cast of characters.
I thought the story went off the rails after a while too. The intriguing world introduced at the start gets thrown in the bin once the big bad shows up.
The combat was superb throughout though, and I'd love to see more action FFs after this.

Completed Final Fantasy XVI last night.
So, decided to change the banner image on my profile (it'd been an Elden Ring screenshot for some time).
It might not have felt like a Final Fantasy game at times in terms of combat, but the story was there. Clive is most definitely a new fave
And it's the first FF with a story that managed to make me cry.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I love this scene from Final Fantasy XVI.
Completed the Wall of Memories in Final Fantasy XVI.
I'm right before the end game and just wrapping some things up. I've done all side quests. Done all the hunts.
I'm now just levelling up to level 50 before heading off to take care of business one final time.
In some ways, this game has definitely felt shorter than previous Final Fantasy games (non-MMORPG entries).
I'm faced with a protagonist I ended up liking and a game I don't want to end.

We finished #FinalFantasyXVI with @Azurakumo… pretty epic ride, flawed but still epic. Great music, characters, voice acting and action based combat.
Forgot to mention here that I finally finished FFXVI. Overall I enjoyed the game quite a bit and did all the side quests that flesh out the world and characters. It doesn't commit fully to being an RPG or Action Game (if you're a genre purest) but I think it does a good enough job at remaining fun and engaging. I kinda wish I captured more screenshots.
Story was good and depressing. Yay!

Have you heard people moaning about the length of #FinalFantasyXVI's cutscenes.
Just how long are they?
On Sunday, I put my daughter down for a nap, made some lunch and played a bit of FFXVI.
An 1hr 30mins, I got through one of the later stage major boss fights and a cutscene started. My daughter woke, so I paused, sorted a bottle for her, got her and fed her while watching cutscenes, which continued past her finishing her bottle, for 10 mins after.
That's how long the cutscenes are.

Und weiter gehts! Das Spiel ist doch länger als erwartet. 🎮 Pro7Maxx meinte in einer Sonder Sendung zu Teil 16 es hätte eine Spielzeit von 36 Stunden aber wie kamen die darauf? Das ist Final Fantasy das spielt man nicht in 36 Stunden durch außer man Skipt die Story und macht keine neben Aufgaben aber wie öde wäre das denn? Meine aktuelle Spielzeit ist bei 53 Stunden!

Ein paar Eindrücke aus meiner vorletzen #FinalFantasyXVI Session. Ich mag Shiva/Jill sehr gerne und finde das Jagen von den Monster-Aufträgen ziemlich befriedigend. Macht Spaß, in der Welt auch mal etwas stärkere Gegner anzutreffen.
#FinalFantasyXVI: ich bin jetzt irgendwas zwischen 10 und 20 Stunden drin (nach Hörensagen wird es später schwächer) und finde es zum einen ein tolles Spiel und andererseits eine sehr passende Fortsetzung der Serie und dessen was sie ausmacht :
zeitgemäßes Gameplay und Inszenierung auf dem Stand der Technik, die genutzt werden, um eine spannende (nicht unbedingt "gute") Geschichte zu erzählen.
(im Gegensatz zu einigen anderen Serienteilen, die imho zu sehr an der Vergangenheit hingen)

I'm 12 hours/31% through #FinalFantasyXVI and boy am I really enjoying it. The combat feels fun in the same way that I enjoyed combat in Spider-Man and Miles Morales, and the story is gripping.
Just finished All Bark and Playthings, and wow even these side quests are hitting hard.

Laughed at the collector's edition of #FinalFantasyXVI, I had an upper bound of $200 on it, but $350 is absurd. The deluxe edition (a steelbook and a cloth map) is overpriced at $100 but at least approaching reasonable.
