Workout today:

Deadlift: warm ups, 1x6 @ 280 (85% 1rm), 4x6 @ 255lbs.
Close grip bench: 4x8 @ 155lbs (70% 1rm)
Bicep curls/skullcrushers: supersetted 3x17 @ 25lbs or some small weight like that.

Morning workout meant I felt a bit more stiff on the deadlifts. After the workout I realized I usually have a 1 inch raise on them to make it easier to get into position. That explains things! Bench strength is back especially with proper rest between sets.

If it’s Saturday, it’s #parkrun! My regular parkrun was canceled, so I ran #Eagan today, which is the closest one to my home. This is a much tougher course than #hamletpark and it was very warm today. I ran 31:26, which is 54 seconds slower than last week. Given the difference between the courses, this was an improvement. Next week, back at Hamlet Park and I’m taking aim directly at 30:00, my year end goal. VO2 max at 34.8 a new high and 2.0 higher than last week. #fitby60 #fitness #running

- 150 m run

Used a 7,5 kg dumb bell, tripped on the box steps over so those were unloaded for the rest, and got time capped at 14:00 with the last round to go. Oh well!

June 2 morning cycling workout, spin class, first cycling workout of June.

I got a late start, but I ended up with 20.3 miles in 57:10. That’s 21.3 mph (like it says). My average watts were 200, down slightly from last Friday. But I felt that today’s workout was also different and not quite as challenging.

The bike says 837 calories/hr, but it doesn’t know my weight or anything else about me. The Apple Watch says 621 calories and that’s what I’m going with. #fitby60 #fitness #cycling 🚴‍♀️

First workout in the month of June. Run/walk of 3.77 miles. 2 1/2 minute warmup to begin and then 5/6 minute run/walk intervals. Very warm this morning, much more so than is has been all spring. VO2 max of 33.9, a new high. Power average down, pace slower, heart rate slightly higher than last Thursday (same distance). After two days in a row of meeting or exceeding my maximum output for a given ride duration (awesome!), doing the strength calibration test to failure, and my first weights workout of this whole "The Stronger You" Program (all through Peloton) I'm glad today is an easy day. I would have taken one even if it wasn't. The DOMS is pretty apparent although not debilitating. It sucks my 100th Peloton ride is going to be a recovery ride not some new big ride but I'll hit another century marker again soon enough at my current rate of consistency. #Peloton #health #fitness #longevity

When it comes to my #fitness practice, I often hear I have lots of mental strength. I really don't.

I simply nurtured a desire for change until it became a habit. It's extremely comforting. It structures my day and helps me go through it. It's an anchor, a tool against daily entropy and self-indulgence.

There's little willpower in maintaining a habit. That's the point. Working out is reassuring. It's familiar and oddly effortless, unlike other important tasks I tend to procrastinate about.

I thought I was going to a classic functional training class today but when I arrived it turned out that it was a HIIT class.

After spending the first 5 minutes literally at my max pulse while some lady screamed at me never to stand still, I left. Half-way in tears, half-way ready to vomit.

So many trainers have completely misunderstood what motivating someone actually is.

After more than 2 weeks with little to no physical activity I've done an ultrasound to my calf and I've significantly strained the soleus muscle. It's like the tricep in the calf.
Luckily I can fully recover with physical therapy, but I can't participate to the 10k in Paris in 19 days 😢
I'm pissed.

I've got myself a Xiaomi Smart Band 7 Pro without realizing it is not supported by @gadgetbridge (the "un-pro" version is supported, though). I am entertaining the idea of implementing support for it, even more so that the official Mi Fitness app doesn't synchronize data properly to the phone (and I definitely do not want the data synchronized to someone else's cloud).

Just went for a very short run, tried not to worry about how short it was and just enjoy being outside with the wind in my hair. I played about a bit with speeding up a little then slowing it down a couple of times. Today I did my longest run yet. I realised I need a water bottle for these runs. In the last stages of the run, I was facing a sun & it was getting really hot, hence a higher HR at the end and I had to stop.

As a life-long soda junkie that long ago switched to diet soda and seltzer I'll be the first to say that I don't consider diet soda or junk food made with artificial sweeteners "healthy food". At the same time the hyperbole on this topic, often coming from the a place of trying to be helpful, is really not grounded. Would it be better if I cut back on my diet soda habit or even better eliminated it? Absolutely. I just spent 20 minutes re-learning how to jump rope. 😅

I walk a lot (fast) and generally try to stay in shape but I felt more out of breath than dignified in the end. 💦 No matter! It's good, cheap cardio (i.e., you can do it basically anywhere and don't have to pay for a gym membership), and I like to remain healthy.

Related: I got some resistance bands and they've been great so far. They do nicely for strength training, and go easy on the joints. 👍🏼

First run of the year! Yes I know it’s May, I’ve been a bit hesitant to run while the weather has been so bad.

I did 5km, but there was a lot of “fast walking” involved, as my shoulder started hurting. Need to read about how to prevent that. But feeling very good about getting back into it!

I ask, of course, because I can. A few cardio related stats got worse then took a few weeks to climb back up. Had to cut my run short today because I pulled a muscle in my right calf. It started to bother me at km 3 and just before km 8 I had to stop because of the pain. Hopefully some rest will fix it.
Do you know how long should I rest? I can move normally, though it's a bit painful

Resting Respiratory Rate: 13 (+1)

It is really amazing how long some of these activities take to recover from! I need more sleep and to keep eating!

While honey bees 🐝 are very efficient pollinators 🌸, this *preprint* (I.e., not yet peer reviewed) suggests that their #pollination efforts don’t produce as fit offspring as pollination by #native #pollinators.

The authors suggest this is due to honey bees spending time on single plants (and thus facilitating selfing) rather than moving between plants (which would increase cross-fertilization).

It's a good day for cracking #fitness records. After a longish walk with my wife — something we often do on days that start with "Su-" — I rode the bike outside (as described else-toot) for the first time since my knee surgery. I used the floor pump to get 110 psi into the skinny tires, which was a bit of arm work. Only 75 mins. later, I did my second push-up set on the day. I hit 110 reps! Again, I left 2-3 on the table. So, that's 225 in two sets! I want to do a third set in a few more hours.

Story time :)

When I was 39, and a couple of years before I transitioned, I took up running and found that I really enjoyed it, and was really good at it.

Within 18 months and no athletic background, I was running 5km in under 20 minutes. It wasn't particularly healthy. I think I was addicted, and was using it as a way of distracting from my dysphoria, but even then, it was still a source of joy for me.

It was the first time I ever felt proud of the body I was in and what it could do.

It's been an interesting journey since I transitioned though, because transition diminished my athletic performance significantly. Ironically, I found myself more comfortable in my skin overall, yet at the same time, the first and only thing I'd ever felt proud of in my body was being stripped away.

For many years since then, I sort of fell away from fitness. I was no longer fighting dysphoria, and I was also struggling with everything being harder than it used to be. My muscle memory was still strong, and told me I should be able to do the things I used to do, but I just couldn't, and it made it hard for me to stay on track with my fitness.

Throw in an injury, and then covid closing down parkrun, and my fitness fell to the wayside. Thankfully though, my relationship with my body and my performance has continued to change.

Today, I ran parkrun in 32.5 minutes. That's actually slower than the first time I ever ran a parkrun, yet that no longer matters in the way it used to. Today, that 32.5 minute result gave me a feeling of joy again. The feeling of being proud of my body, as a I start to see my fitness improve and my efforts at training paying off!

Sometimes it's hard to get out of our own heads, but I think I'm doing it :)

These guys have a really physical job and don’t balk at weights and keeping moving.

They are absolutely worth the slightly more premium price over USPS lard butts that would leave a note saying “come pick it up yourself at the post office”.

Gooood morning! My day off today, so I started my run a little later than usual. I wasn’t really feeling it when I left the house but not only did I just run for 20 minutes straight, but I shaved 6 whole minutes off my personal best for 5k!
