Bellingen's Tuckers Nob Forest remnant vegetation to be logged

Inside Tuckers Nob State Forest (26/27) Dr. Tim Cadman documented threatened species (again). Many rainforest trees, such as threatened Ringwoods were identified. Syzygium anisatum/Anetholea anisata is endemic to the subtropical Bellinger Valley.

The background acoustics (in the video) is the fossil fuel machinery bashing their way through the native forest. (Hillier Trail) It is making the home of diverse and threatened wildlife and plants machine-ready for the clear-felling machines.

Retention of dead biomass by plants is common in the temperate herbaceous flora and can be related to certain plant traits, indicating relevance to ecosystem functioning. I enjoy my Four O Clock flowers seeing what colours they have decided to come out in. They are mostly multicoloured and not often just one solid colour. Mine don't flower at four o clock they are much later as the sun goes down. Proper name Mirabilis jalapa, or another common name The marvel of Peru.

I took the first picture one month ago, ahead of this beauty blooming.

The remainder are pictures from now, late afternoon today!

I find it astounding how such flowering bloom can and does, grow in such a short time and with so much beauty and grace.

This is a #peach. For years I believed it to be cherry. So today, I learned something new about this gorgeous specimen!

(I’ve always noticed this tree but never had the opportunity to check for fruit, nor verified it’s identity). Time to remedy that, this year!!

One of the niche topics in #OpenStreetMap is depicting the genus of a tree. The current #botany hardship is to learn the differences between mountain ash (aka rowan) and European ash (aka ash).

One would think they are both from the same genus Fraxinus, since they both have the word “ash” in their name, but actually rowan is from the genus Sorbus.

The next step is to learn how to depict these two species and it comes down to how the leaf stem is connected to the branch, one is compound (ash), whereas the other is staggered (rowan). To add to the trickiness, the leaf of both species consists of compound leaflets. These leaflets are arranged along the leaf stem to create the leaf and each leaflet has its own leaflet stem.

(Of course there are many other differences like leaflet shape and count or bark shape, though trying create a method that can withstand dim lit scenarios like night.)

To imagine the differences between compound and staggered, imagine wearing a shirt that uses buttons vs one that uses a zipper. The buttons need to be aligned with their holes to comfortably wear the shirt, so they are compound. Whereas if you have a zipper, the teeth are alternating, so they are staggered.

In summary:

rowan (genus: Sorbus) has staggered leaves,
ash (genus: Fraxinus) has compound leaves, and
both have compound leaflets

Fun fact: The Fraxinus genus is the predominant genus that has compound leaves.

They are native to the eastern side of southern Africa, from Kenya south to South Africa.

They have fragrant funnel-shaped flowers, and these were sweet with a perfumed aroma.

They come in many colours of the rainbow, including a variety of shades (mixes).
