OS devs: *please* provide regularly-refreshed install images/ISOs with your cumulative updates between major releases.
I don't love downloading your entire multi-GB OS image just to have to wait for hours for all the updates to the OS and included apps to download and install.
Also, security updates! If CVEs have been fixed since your release, you're shipping known-insecure software, expecting a user to install all updates before they do anything on the web.
Whaddaya know? 👀

Ryzom is a FLOSS MMO RPG which has been operating for over a decade. The community bought it out, when it was a commercial flop, and has been maintaining the game and it's code base for ages now. It's AGPL and the assets are CC-BY-SA.
This #Kickstarter here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hughbowen/the-saga-of-ryzom-mmorpg-by-tiphsahinc
Seems VERY likely being done without permission to use Ryzom's trademark. And somehow I suspect they're not intending to abide by the license on their code or assets.
I created an account over at #Ryzom to raise a support ticket about this.
Anyone else know a better way of getting it to their attention? Only the IP holder can raise a trademark issue with #Kickstarter ?

It doesn't replace a #public & #accessible #documentation nor does it work good as #messenger or #chat nor does it work for #calling and #ConverenceCalling...
Discord is just bad and everyone who considers using it for anything serious like a #FLOSS project should get forced to reconsider because Discord is ableist garbage and has unacceptable ToS!
@CodexArcanum @mastodonmigration I do hope so that people finally realize that only #OpenSource & #MultiVendor / #MultiProvider solutions and standards will survive and live.

That's why #Joyn failed and died before #MMS and why in the end only #FLOSS & #OpenStandards will survive long-term.

Interface Update Beta
I'm at the point where enough progress has been done on the interface update that I feel like it's safe to call it a "Beta" officially now! It should be stable enough that running into errors should (hopefully) be a thing of the past and bugs should be minimal. Users can find the new Beta theme on the Preferences page under "Themes" on the left! Aethy users can find it here !
The updated interface is redesigned to focus on long-form blog-style posts and artwork. It has larger post bodies which allows for a greater emphasis both on text and media. The compose box for posts has also been moved to its own pop-up modal, allowing for improved visuals for writing longer posts.
User profile pages now also have a sidebar that allows for them to be more spread out. Pinned content appears on the right along with a new gallery area that showcases recent media uploads (excluding media in replies to others).
Along with this, the Settings pop-up (also known as "Display Settings" or "Interface Settings") has been revamped to allow users to visually tweak the design of Ruffy. Users can choose from a Light theme, Dark theme, Mixed theme, or stay with the default behavior of simply following whatever your system is set to! Users can then also pick an accent color from a list or opt to use their own that will be applied to the whole site.
The Explore page has been redesigned to act as a hub for all the timelines! There, you can find the local timeline, remote timeline, combined timeline, and popular posts! Trending hashtags and recommended accounts has been moved to the sidebar of the Home and Explore pages.
Content Warnings and Sensitive media have now been merged under one toggle as well. While it's not possible to mark an image as "Sensitive" from Ruffy, other Fediverse software still contains this feature so we've opted to simply add a generic "Unlabeled sensitive content" Content Warning to posts that are sensitive.
Content Warnings on posts have also been redesigned. There's now one toggle that will unfurl posts with Content Warnings that will expose both the text and image at the same time. Clicking a post or media attachment will now show the content (similar to how clicking sensitive images worked previously). By default, posts with a Content Warning will have their text redacted (similar to how confidential documents are redacted!) and will be shown when clicked. This behavior can also be changed to simply hide the post similar to how it worked previously!
The options that allowed for Content Warnings and Sensitive media to be exposed by default has also been moved into the Settings modal and use the same setting. Forcing all images to be hidden has been moved here as well! Visibility for the entire website can be toggled on the fly without having to refresh the page and dig through the external preferences area.
There's still some unfinished bits to be taken care of! I'll create a list of them below but feel free to report anything else you find in the replies!
Needed refinements:
- Compose modal should have a cancel button that clears the text. Clicking outside of the modal to close it is also strange when compared to other modals. The compose dialogue should also probably have an easier way to clear existing text.
- The Settings modal should have image representations for the Themes and Post visibility options instead of radio buttons (similar to how the accent colors work).
- Some areas on the Light and Mixed themes still need to be swapped off the Dark theme.
- The Preferences page color scheme needs to be more refined.
- Add an option to toggle the visibility of the trending hashtags and/or suggested accounts on the Home page.
- "Local only" toggle needs to be moved to the privacy button.
Admin settings:
- Icon feature needs to be implemented
Known Bugs:
- Posts on the Conversations page that are labeled with a CW or marked as sensitive don't automatically open when clicked. This can be worked around by hitting the 3 dot menu and clicking "View Conversation"

The #Unity drama made me check out #Godot. I'm simply amazed by the quality of this #FLOSS game engine at first glance.
It was super easy to bootstrap a simple 2D top-down game skeleton and most things are quite intuitive.
The only thing that keeps biting me is when I'm trying to close an opened script tab, that doesn't close the script but closes the scene. Lost some work due to this and my impatience/inability to read properly.
The upstream hashtag behavior has been merged into the Beta and Glitch flavours! From now on, any hashtags that are added at the end of the post will be put into their own section at the bottom of a post. This stops the hashtags from becoming an eyesore at the bottom! It will also collapse the hashtags into a smaller list that can be expanded if there are a lot of them!

For those who don't know what I'm talking about: OpenSimulator, also called #OpenSim, is a free and #OpenSource platform for 3-D #VirtualWorlds that uses largely the same technology as #SecondLife. It was launched as early as 2007. It mostly became a network of #federated, interconnected worlds (#grids) when the #Hypergrid was introduced in 2008. And "#Metaverse" has been a part of the standard OpenSim vocabulary since before 2010, too.
It currently measures about 420 public grids at various sizes from tiny to slightly larger than Second Life itself and countless private grids, the vast majority of which are on the Hypergrid.
So without further ado, here are some suggestions:

Thank you for the recommendation to read Lawrence Rosen's "Open Source Licensing: Software Freedom and Intellectual Property Law", July 2004. It was very informative, and clarified a lot of issues for me around licensing, patents, trademarks, copyright, and contract law.
Because it was published in 2004, it only describes the GPLv2 and not the GPLv3 and does not include the AGPL. The strongest open source license in the book appears to be Rosen's own OSL (Open Source License) because of its broader focus not limited to "programs" or "files" as the GPL and MPL do.
Do you have any recommendations for a book to read that includes the newer open source reciprocal licenses and the more modern open source licensing landscape? I am hoping to compare the AGPL and the OSL and possibly newer reciprocal licenses, or understand newer arguments for/against reciprocal agreements.
Thanks again!

The #Economics of Open Source talk by @evancz was really great, insightful and funny - and also a bit depressing. When someone like Evan can't release a feature because of fear of being "Jeff-ed" (outcompeted in trying to monetize by providing hosting by AWS and other large players) ...

For TTS and STT there are also solutions (https://fe.disroot.org/notice/AYgl4U8wEPrglfZ5UG), although one still has to rely on big(ger) companies or projects that provide technologies like Vosk, Whisper, DeepSpeech, Piper or Coqui.
So I guess it's also important to have pacesetters like Mozilla collaborating on projects like Bergamot and having the corresponding infrastructure that we require as users.
There are other projects like argos (https://fe.disroot.org/notice/ASVU7OwythQGi0cDtg), known to many as libretranslate, with which you can get acceptable translations. However, both are not on the same level as DeepL.
No complaint here, since paid workers have different resources than FLOSS volunteers.
For LLM there is Open Assistant (https://fosstodon.org/@devSJR/110337305386857764), which is probably the closest thing to ChatGPT. Now, Microsoft will increasingly include Copilot and Google will increasingly include Bard in its products. More specifically, they will not only be usable for programming, but rather enable travel planning, shopping, composing emails, and more.
What is the FLOSS to these developments?
How can we build sustainable FLOSS ecosystems where developers can make a good living from it?
I don't have a good answer to these questions.

I agree. Personally I still prefer #Osmand as an OSM-based navigation app, because it is more detailed in its synthesized voice instructions (it says the names of streets and roads) and also about the lanes, although #OrganicMaps has improved this. Actually, Organic Maps is constantly improving, so I keep of and try it from time to time. And it's less cluttered and much easier to use than OSMand (which, at the same time, has many many more options and customizations, which is very nice, but another use case than Organic Maps, I'd say). You may follow news and updates here: https://t.me/OrganicMapsApp

Is there a #floss audio solution that includes the hardware? Speakers and amplifier etc? I’m stuck in this weird world where stuff that was easy a decade ago seems unachievable today.

Gnome (@gnome) just keeps getting better. I love how Adwaita has made our GTK desktops look so clean and professional. There are however two fundamental design issues I think should be addressed: there’s too much padding for a mouse-based UI and the top bar is still way too underutilized.
The Blue Oak Model License is the one that fits all my requirements perfectly, namely:
- it is permissive
- has patent and contribution coverage
- clear text, no legalese
- simple and modern template
- maintenance-friendly, with no personalized copyright header in the template itself
- no dreaded ALL-CAPS
Going to use it for all my projects and highly recommended to everyone else out there! 👍

I've been raising issues with the phrases "non-code contributor" or "non-technical contributor" for at least a couple of years now.
And yet to this day I continue to see people of good will giving presentations and writing blog posts using that framing.
When will we learn that defining people by what they are not* is not a valid pathway to inclusion?
(* caveat because "non-technical contributors" are absolutely technical. It's a BS phrase.)
Since my replies are full of people missing the point (it's like a two-second meme is not nuanced!):
Of course I don't think #Flatpak, #Flathub, #FreeDesktop, etc. are evil. 😂
But we should be happy to use #SteamDeck as a way to get the cool stuff we're working on into the hands of millions of new folks. And we should be happy to use it as an example when talking to app developers we want to support #Linux.
Perhaps this is an alternative interpretation.
I'll keep saying it, because it keeps coming up. If you're working in the FreeDesktop, Linux, or Flatpak spaces, you *need* to understand this, even if you don't personally care about gaming or Steam Deck.
