Coastal forest and morning fog, Point Lobos State Reserve.

When people imagine visiting the California coast, I’m pretty sure that most of them envision a beach, blue water, surf, clear skies, and abundant sun. That happens, in some locations more than others, but coastal fog is about as likely as that fantasy weather. It can be cold and damp and gray, but this California weather also has its charms — the sound of surf coming up through the fog, the chill air, the muted colors.

We have had some beautiful sunny days in Shetland but this can bring the haar, the sea fog.

Sky lowers to touch hill. The horizon moves closer, slowly, imperceptibly, until you are suspended in the flow of an opaque river. Tendrils of mist travel with the wind, seeking, reaching, grasping. Ghostly shapes of gulls appear then evaporate, familiar sounds and places transform, the boundaries of the world feel uncertain, in motion.

Most of my woodland photography is done when I'm immersed in nature deep inside the woods, but occasionally there are times when I find success on the edge of the woods on shorter visits with the camera.

It's also a very good tactic when photographing in a hoar frost, as the frost often doesn't spread far enough into the woods.
