Beneath a dark dramatic hazy cloudy sky a setting sun burns through most of the haze to create a golden orb and paint the clouds around it and the bottoms of more distant clouds gold and orange. We are standing on a rock ridge crest above a small lake. A branch of scrub oak, covered with bright red leaves is just in front of us. Beyond the lake is a lower wooded ridge, reflected on the calm lake surface along with the sky.

A wide stream runs through a narrow wooded ravine past the remnants of an old stone wall. Most of the trees are tall hemlocks and pines, but a cluster of young hardwoods in the background sport bright yellow and green autumn foliage. The forest floor is very rocky and carpeted with fallen leaves and tree limbs, moss, ferns and small leafy shrubs. The stream is running high and fast, runoff from a storm that is just winding down to light drizzle.

Along the bank of a river to our right beneath a deep blue October sky. The midday sun is creating a dazzling reflection just ahead of us on the lightly rippled waters of this rather placid stretch of river. A forest surrounds the river on both sides, mostly hardwoods in bright autumn colors: yellow, golds, bright greens, oranges, reds. Hmmm ... I have no idea what to write about this morning. I'm sitting here with my feet upon my desk, sipping coffee. My head is slightly buzzing, that kind of feeling when you just wake in the morning and want to close your eyes again. I may have mentioned that in retirement, naps are not mandatory, but they are highly encouraged. I had a weird fantastical dream last night, there was some sort of entrance to another world in the basement and an elf creature with a double-barreled shotgun. It is weirder, because we don't have a basement. Anyway, the dream is fading fast and within a matter of minutes, I won't be able to recall any of the details, except for those I've written here. A strange thing about most dreams is how quickly they fade from memory.

This is a branch of an Elliots' blueberry (Vaccinium elliottii) plant. These grow wild in the area, and I recall identifying them on the edge of the forest before, but I've never actually noticed blueberries growing during season. I told myself last year I would be more observant and try to notice the wild blueberries and grapes because there are both around. Anyway, this leafy branch sticks up diagonally from the bottom right corner, the almond shaped leaves are shades of red and green.

Charlie rarely gives up when he wants something, he is in a word, tenacious. He always wants to go outside with me, and if I stand up, he will position himself near the door, ready to go. If it is time to eat and I haven't moved from my stupor, he will make noises and shake me until I get up and feed them. As a matter of fact, he is starting to pester me as I write, however I'm not quite in a stupor ... close though. Now here comes Ben, who is less assertive but will position himself to make certain that I see him. It is time to prepare their breakfast.

The coffee is good this morning.

Death is a good business, but there are far too many people in the United States who cannot afford to pay for a loved one's funeral when the time comes, and the time always comes. I know this from personal experience because we've paid for or helped pay for a few over the years. Once, while in Georgia for Thanksgiving, a young man knocked on the door, he was seeking donations to pay for his mother's funeral. It was heartbreaking to think of him having to go door to door, hat in hand asking for help. The next day, my wife and I went to see the funeral director and paid the balance of the funeral cost. We asked for his discretion, of course.

The sky is clear, almost cloudless and blue. Top right, the sun is low in the sky, casting long shadows to our left. The afternoon sunlight is tinted gold. Two of its rays are visible, slanting down towards our left. We are walking a trail through a shallow ravine. The trail and the forest floor surrounding it are carpeted with freshly fallen brightly colored leaves. Many rocks and boulders are poking through the leaves, many fallen branches are laying on top. Much of the underbrush has lost its leaves, most of what's left is rusty golden brown and burnt orange. The trees are past peak autumn color. Most of the leaves are down. A few trees still have bright gold and orange leaves. The sun shining through those leave accentuates the still bright colors, and enhances even the past peak colors.

We are climbing up a dry ravine between rather steep rocky slopes on our left and right. The ravine slopes upward ahead of us, but a bit less steeply. The floor and sides of the ravine are covered with many rocks and boulders, numerous freshly fallen golden leaves, also fallen tree branches and tree trucks. There are very few trees growing along the floor of the ravine and the bottom portions of its steep sides, but a thick forest covers the higher slopes and the head of the ravine in front of us. The trees are sporting mostly bright gold foliage with a sprinkling of orange leaves. The cloudless sky seen through the forest ahead of us is an intense light blue. The sunlight is shining towards us through the golden leaves, backlighting the rocks and tree trunks.

Kakabeak, native to New Zealand. Showy red flowers that resemble the shape of native parrot beaks and hang in clusters from an overarching branch. Pea-green fresh foliage. Clianthus species.
Our new maple tree, recently purchased from the local plant nursery. Masses of many-pointed maple leaves that are lime green further in, graduating to yellow on the most outer leaves. The lovely spring colouring of the foliage was why we bought it (impulse buy).

 I've never known poverty, at least long term, the closest I've come was in my youth. But I've seen poverty close up. Where there is poverty, the people don't really have a grasp of their situation. They might not know they are poor because they are surrounded by people in the same situation and have never known any other way to live. Poverty reeks of desperation and people are willing to do things, you wouldn't think of doing to get by, like begging and stealing from friends and relatives. Pulling themselves up by their bootstraps isn't as easy as it sounds especially in rural areas where getting a job requires transportation and transportation requires wealth.

It's Monday morning, time to get up and go to work for many of you. I wonder how many of you sometimes set you alarm clock on the weekend, just so you can shut it off and go back to sleep. I used to do that sometimes. :)

We purchased a new Christmas tree this year because we have family coming. Hmmm ... I'm not sure what's wrong with the old one, except it hasn't been out of the shed for a while. For the past two years we've gotten away with taking a small ceramic tree that I have and putting it on the dining table and saying, "done." I tried to sell the idea of doing the same thing this year to my wife, but she shot it down immediately. So, we'll do it the hard way.

The season of the money black hole is almost upon us. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and taxes, not to mention home insurance. For Thanksgiving, we always drive to Geogia and stay for about a week. Christmas, this year some grandchildren and great grandchildren decided that they are coming to visit. To top off those expenses, home insurance and property tax is due, I normally just pay for the whole year. Then income taxes, which right now is kind of like a lottery, will we end up owing or get a refund. We've seen the needle swing radically in both directions. Don't get me started on the dentists. Hmmm ... should I end my rant with a bah humbug. ;-)

No worries, I'll come around to bright side soon.

I looked for a negative or funny quote about the holidays but couldn't find one.

Just be careful, the leaves can be slippery, especially on the wooden bridge deck and even more so when they get wet.

A gravel path passes through a wooded area. Flanking the path are trees, rhododendron, and other woodland shrubs. A large tree with several trunks forming the shape of a "W" is in the mid ground on the right side of the paths.
