Many here on #Mastodon are asking how people can justify still being on #X.
My personal experience is tolerable because I donโt use #ForYou and #Following, but only #Lists. So my feed is #chronological, not #algorithmic. I donโt see pushed posts by people I donโt follow, nor do I have any advertising. It only gets bad when I do a #search and select โLatestโ.

Ist this a known bug?
I think that many bloggers have their blog, they write and publish their posts because they want to gain a following and please their readers, likes, comments and especially follows are the reward they need, itโs what they crave. I say many but not all, Iโm sure there are also many who donโt require this reward to feel relevant. Maybe they have a blog and write posts for their own pleasure, maybe they wish to educate, enlighten, perhaps they have an agenda to push or just want to keep a journal, or they have some other reason to blog that I havenโt thought about.
I personally donโt believe any of these reasons is wrong, they are all equally relevant and equally good reasons to blog, blogging after all is a very personal thing to do and whatever your reason for doing so is the correct reason in your eyes and as itโs your blog then who am I, who is anyone to say you should be doing it for some other reason ?
As for me, well I write my blog for myself, simply for my own pleasure, I do it to please myself, I just enjoy putting my thoughts down into words and getting them out there, I am a purely selfish blogger. My blog is my own and I write it for me, yep selfish. Of course if I entertain someone, educate someone or whatever then great thatโs nice to know, if folk like my post, leave a comment of some kind, or even become followers then of course Iโm not gonna complain, thatโs a kind of validation right there and who doesnโt like a little validation ๐
Another thing is that a lot of peeps have a blog which centers on a particular topic, they write posts on a specific subject, something they know about and are passionate about, this places them into a particular niche and from that niche they gain a following. As long as they continue with their prime topic as the main subject of their blog then that niche following will probably stay with them as they will find the kind of things they wish to read and will keep coming back.
Now it may be be hard to tell so far as it is a very young blog and Iโm just sort of setting it up and feeling my way into it, but my blog will end up having quite a wide variety of topics and be quite general in nature as I have quite a few interests and intend to use it as a catch all general personal blog and journal.
Therefore my blog wonโt really have a specific niche as such, there might be a post about photography, followed by one about art, then aquariums, perhaps one about bonsai, a journal entry, a simple status update followed by a mad rant about something in the news and who knows what else in the future !!
This gets me wondering about my little blog, whether or not it will find an audience at all as it doesnโt really have a niche as such, just many random topics, but then again of course as Iโm doing it purely for myself, as a selfish blogger then perhaps this doesnโt matter, maybe not ๐

I feel that the #fediverse's lack of an #algorithm is *more* toxic than #Twitter; on #mastodon's #chronological timeline I feel like I'm missing out on important signal in the noise so I have to spend more time combing through it, exploring #hashtags, #following them, #mute words, build #lists, etc. With Twitter there were ads, but also there was all the best stuff since the last time you logged in, sorted by how interesting it would be to YOU! That was awesome; I miss that!

I rarely use the #Mastodon #web #interface so I don't know if the #dormant #following / #follower option has been available since I first joined last October (it's buried), but I just went through both groups and deleted most of the accounts there.
It seems a lot of them are artifacts of people migrating #server #instances, and a good chunk are folks who went back to #corporate #SocialMedia.
My follower count is now more realistic, from 1.6k to 610. Accounts I follow went from 374 to 259.

You may have seen the #SPAM account from thegx.ca making multiple accounts for nothing more than the purpose of SPAMMING people by #mass #following to #flood your #follower list with their #malicious #website.
According to their #WHOIS #domain #registration, they have obviously provided #fake #information. Because of this, I have filed an #official #complaint with ICANN.
Secondly, I found out their site is hosted by #PromoPeople, and have filed complaint with them as well. You should too!

The central writing mode on Mastodon is the #Reply. Add your comments to existing conversations. If your reply has wider relevance, boost it.

I just happened across an interesting post. It seems to be from one of those type of accounts that many complain about. Iโm just the messenger delivering the opinions that I have gathered in countless conversations on the subject but, Iโm guessing I still may get flack. This is not a complaint about this person, follow backs, or follower count, only what I have heard others talking about.
This person, a journalist, is asking for help getting twitter followers to follow here. The profile already has 106k followers but, only follows 246. I did the math. That's just under .25 %, less than 1 (one) % of their following. One of the bio tags on this persons profile is writing about โinternet cultureโ. I canโt help but wonder how this person can accurately report on a culture they do not seem to engage with 99.75% of itโs members.
As one said, in one of many discussions, it seems arrogant to not hear the voice and opinion of those that follow you. Many Iโve heard tend to agree and again, Iโm just the messenger.

Even an article on why their Twitter account was suspended. No engagement or conversation with the nearly 19,746 followers this user is reqesting assistance from, to collect more followers here.
When I want the news, I turn it on and canโt recall Lloyd Robertson or Katie Couric seeking out my attention or assistance. Today, they would probably be focused on gun violence or the plight of Ukraine, rather than the potential of lost adoration.
Two days ago was another such thread refering to another such โuser". The subject account had 20k followers and only one toot was ever posted. This โuser" follows zero of their 20k followers (Thatโs 0%). Many conversations, and several opinions cite how some big accounts arrogantly expect people to flock but, never engage or acknowledge with those that follow.
Another post several weeks ago was actually directed at another journalist, scathing them for the same lack of engagement. I understand the busyness of facing a deadline but, engaging a few is not that hard. Take a scroll down your follwers list on a Sunday morning and favor, boost or DM "hello" to a few. Its really not that time consuming and the people you get to know, are often amazing.
Me? I follow and reach out. If they follow great, if not, I don't really care. I'm about quality, not quantification. If I find those I follow seem self absorbed or clog up my feed with irrelevance, I mute or unfollow the source.
The common theme echoing is this: Mastodon is not a corporation but, is our community. To be part of any community one generally first must engage. Those who do not, are often viewed as outsiders with no regard for itโs members. Think of it like this: You patronize a shop regularly and the merchant gladly accepts your money. When you see this person on the street, they do not even nod politely, seeming only to avoid you; would you still shop at that persons business?
Whatโs your opinion on this? Iโd like to know, as long as you remember, donโt shoot the messenger. The concern of many is that ivory tower users like this, will turn our community into Twitter 2.hole. A people driven algorithm of elitist exclusion. Again, we are not a target market, we are community of persons.
[After finishing this, I looked at the profile of the individual with the 20k to zero following. I noticed 3k more followers but, now the person follows two. One of the followed is the other profile with 106k noted above.]

..there seems to still be some resistance from a lot of #Mastodon accounts to #follow people.
I was that way out the chute but once I started #following a lot of people posting a #hashtag I like my experience became much more enriched!
Don't worry about making mistakes.. bulk up, and then feel free to #unfollow accounts not adding anything to your experience. I can tell you personally most of us don't take it personally here.. a lot of us are just trying to find our new tribe!

@MarkusEicher How to find a way to make the #federatedtimeline as large as possible to allow a global fedivese search. Seems that for the current set-up all that is needed is for a few people to act as "mega followers". I would start by making a user account2 on my server1 solely for the purpose of #following everyone on the server2 JUST TO GET THE #federatedtimeline have all the posts of server2. Bonkers but the only way as far as I see it. Other megafollowers then repeat for other servers.
