#Fossils tell tale of last #primate to inhabit #NorthAmerica before #humans
The story of #Ekgmowechashala, the final primate to inhabit North America before #HomoSapiens or #Clovis #people, reads like a spaghetti Western: A grizzled and mysterious loner, against the odds, ekes out an existence on the American Plains.
Except this tale unfolded about 30 million years ago, just after the Eocene-Oligocene transition during which North America saw great cooling and drying.

Kuckaraukia (Organisms 🐞)
Kuckaraukia is a genus of enigmatic Ediacaran organisms known from fossil casts of a disc-shaped biogenic structure interpreted as bifoliate, with a structured bottom layer and a less resistant top layer. It is unknown if the fossils represent single animals or a colonial organism of some kind. == References...

This interactive website called Ancient Earth made by Ian Webster for The Dinosaur Database in 2018 is wild. It has a 3D view of Earth you can manipulate - you can grab the Earth and move it in any direction, zoom, etc.
You enter a location in the search field, it marks it with a 📍 and then you can change the date to see what fossils or dinosaurs were in an area (your area!) through all different periods of history.

Primitive, heavy-boned and reliant on megafauna, the sad story of Australia's only vulture
By Caroline Horn
Vultures are found everywhere in the world today, except Australia and Antarctica. But that hasn't always been the case.
Thaumatodracon – the 'Wonder Dragon' – is a large-headed plesiosaur I co-named with Ricardo Araújo in 2017. It is known from a single specimen, an almost complete skull and neck from Lyme Regis, UK.
The paper is difficult to track down and consequently doesn't get cited as much as I think it should. I worked incredibly hard on it so I've just uploaded a PDF to my website here: https://plesiosauria.com/pdf/smith&araujo_2017_thaumatodracon.pdf

How Many #Fossils to Go an Inch? (ft. Robert Krulwich)
I went down to Cuyahoga
to buy a kookaloris
had to fake the dappled light
in the shadows of a forest
but the only kookaloris
in the town of Cuyahoga
was of a pterosaurus¹ flock
flying over beaches
with a thousand teethes eaches
but you know what they say
the play must go on
so I bought what was wrong
and we had to make it work
and Midsummmer Night's Dream
was stalked
by Mesozoic beasts
looming overhead
with their terrifying teeth
when I woke up, the semi-random playlist I fall asleep to had arrived at a chance aggregation of pterosaur podcasts:

how many atoms

ejected from a volcano?
would ghosts of ammonite

dance high up in the sky?

how often do you think
of all the dead things
whose corpses lie buried
on the bottom of the sea?
how many are headed
toward a subduction zone
where the sea floor
bends down beneath
another tectonic plate
and down, down, down
those dead things
will go
those corpses
turned to stone
to be melted
deep beneath
a subduction zone
