I'm looking to change hosting providers for my mail server. Currently I'm using #DigitalOcean but they don't support #FreeBSD anymore and would like something with better support. Does anyone have recommendations?

Does anyone have pointers?

#FreeBSD 13.2 & FreeBSD 14 Beta 4 ARM64 images for #Vagrant (w/ VMware Fusion provider) have been released.

This should help out the macOS users running on Apple Silicon M1/M2 chips who cannot run VBox.

You would not rotate your framebuffer by 23 deg ☝️ ! #FreeBSD #KernelGirl

Excerpt of vt_fb.c :

Case handling of the flag FB_FLAG_ROTATE_23 with a circular rotation by 23 deg of the values x and y.

They are later on combined into a integer of a pixel buffer offset.

What's your favorite file in `/usr/src` and why is it `sys/dev/fb/fb.c` ?

Das passt also zeitlich.

@jhx I built a #freebsd firewall, limited CPU usage, low in memory usage. Very pleased in the first period of this setup. A NAS would be comparable. Which filesystem did you choose? #zfs or #btfrs My preference is the filesystem of Unraid, but that is not available for others I suppose

Thanks to @vermaden's article :

I 've just installed linux-brave on #FreeBSD.

I noticed that if you are running the ./linux-browser-installer when /compat/ubuntu is already installed, you encounter some errors.

You need to install curl first in the /compat/ubuntu chroot, or you'll see this:

E: Unable to locate package curl

Same thing for gnupg:

E: gnupg, gnupg2 and gnupg1 do not seem to be installed, but one of them is required for this operation

Funny how you end up using #apt on freebsd!

One of these moments where #FreeBSD (and the unixes that still use ifconfig are so much easier to use than the sillin #Linux ip command.

Just found this code that is attempting to list network interfaces on Linux:

ip a | grep BROADCAST | grep 'state UP' | awk '{print $2}' | awk -F ":" '{print $1}' | awk -F "@" '{print $1}'

I can replace that with ifconfig -l -u on FreeBSD

@jhx Nothing specific to #ZFS as far as I know.

Like with any #RAID and similar, it works best when the used drives are the same model, at least the same size and speed...

Specifically about your example: Do you have yet another drive for #swap? If not, I would suggest to create (identical!) partition tables on the drives (zpool on top of partitions is unproblematic with #FreeBSD) and have some swap space on both of them. That's better than putting swap in a file or on a zvol...

@mwl Yep. #FreeBSD is certainly not perfect, and I'm sure there are good changes to bring over from OpenBSD pf.

The unfortunate part: the ridiculous assertions that FreeBSD pf is outdated by 15 years or is unmaintained or has hundreds of issues that have been fixed in OpenBSD or that it would be "easy" to just switch to what's in OpenBSD today. There's 15 years of distinct evolution in OpenBSD and FreeBSD pf with no easy way to reconcile.

thanks everyone! Almost 300 people replied to that, and we had 30 cloud users, 66 VM users and 204 bare metal users.

Most of them run #OpenBSD or #NixOS, I guess this is due to a bias of my followers network 😅 , I've also read about FreeBSD, Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu and Gentoo.

A surprising amount of #Proxmox and #FreeBSD bhyve users for virtualization on their bare metal machines.

Many people reported using rasbperry pi boards for hosting services.

I'm surprised that there is only one mention of Docker, but multiple mentions of both LXC and FreeBSD jails. You people rocks :flan_cool:

Found this graphic I made for a rejected talk. It DOES explain the spectrum that spans #linux through #illumos to #freebsd as far what's covered by the most-upstream:

"illumos is more than the kernel, but not wholly self-contained, and therefore has distributions."

Line graph illustration: With kernel-only Linux on the left, kernel-plus-some-commands-and-libraries illumos in the middle, and whole-cloth OS FreeBSD on the right.

Is there anyone using #swift in a context outside of the #apple ecosystem?

As in, if you're using it as the backend of a service on something like #Linux or #FreeBSD, but it's a service for an #iPhone or #MacOS app, I wouldn't count that.

If it's just a generic service that's consumed by non-apple sources, I'd count that.

Boosts appreciated, this is purely for my own curiosity. Feel free to share what you work on, if you can, in replies!

Turns out #PHP's had ifunc support on #FreeBSD disabled for about half a decade, so we don't get any of those fancy SIMD-optimized base64, addslashes, or mb_ string functions.

The port maintainer plans on enabling them on lang/php83, but it will need people to test it before it gets backported.

I gave it a go with php81 on a 5700X:

addslashes, 10m iterations: 2.5s -> 0.45s
base64_encode, 10m iterations: 2s -> 0.6s

I find it fascinating that #linux users by now say #wayland is inevitable yet I've still not found a single thing where it would actually bring me an improvement (aside maybe the input handling, but that gets balanced out). Meanwhile from what I know outside of linux on the other *nix os there in many cases is just the bare minimum for wayland to work at best (#FreeBSD, my daily driver, being an exception, but still)

🎉 Celebrating two months since launching the BSD Cafe! 🎉

Exactly two months ago today (20th July 2023), I released the #Mastodon instance of BSD Cafe, effectively announcing to the world the idea behind BSD Cafe. The response was much warmer than expected from both *BSD enthusiasts and the entire #Fediverse community. This overwhelming support motivated me to keep pushing forward, expanding the Cafe with new services.

We've introduced a wiki ( - currently a site describing the Cafe services, but in the future, it will also host tutorials, tips, experiences, etc.), a Miniflux server ( - for personalized RSS feed reading), and recently, a Matrix server ( - for BSD Cafe users to chat in the Lounge, discuss various *BSD topics or interact with the world due to the decentralized nature of the protocol).

BSD Cafe will also be mentioned in the upcoming FreeBSD Status Report (

User numbers are growing weekly. Some stay active, some not as much, but one thing remains consistent among all: a passion for technology, free operating systems (especially *BSD), and a desire to collaborate and grow together.

So, a big thank you to everyone who contributes daily to make BSD Cafe vibrant and growing, those who offer advice, participate in polls, and believed in us these past two months. Without you, all of this wouldn't make sense.

Stay tuned! 🚀

Today I learned how to use LLDB to debug a program that forks!

Thanks to the #freebsd #irc channel for correcting some initial facepalming errors on my part, and to the #FreeBSDFoundation that funded Moritz Systems to add support for this last year.

Okay, I believe that the code-based Argentum theme, in combination with the minimal hooks added to libs-gui, is now at feature-parity with the modified libs-gui fork.

Tomorrow, if I have time, I will go over the changes again, see if anything needs polishing up, before submitting a PR upstream.

The gist of the PR is the the hooks added change nothing for any existing app or library, cause zero disruption, but enable this theme to do what it needs to do. I would, of course, be open to better ways for it to do what it does, but the notion is what it is.

Informal survey for folks who use BSD Unix:

1. Are you aware of any variety of BSD that has converted its base filesystem layout such that either /bin and /lib are symlinks to /usr/bin and /usr/lib respectively (possibly with several more such symlinks), or, the other way around, /usr is a symlink to /?

2. Are you aware of any variety of BSD that has concrete plans to make either of the above changes in the foreseeable future?

3. Are you aware of any variety of BSD that has considered and *rejected* making any such change?

I'm asking these questions in my capacity as /de facto/ maintainer of Autoconf. Your answers will help me document how to write third-party software that works correctly regardless of whether /usr is separate from the root.

[For the record, Autoconf already does, and will continue to, support both of the above altered filesystem layouts as well as the traditional one. The only exception I'm currently aware of is that configure scripts may malfunction or fail to start if /bin/sh does not exist at all, which I hope everyone can agree is a pathological case.]

Please boost for reach. Answers accepted either by replaying to this toot, or by email (zack at owlfolio dot org). It is helpful if you can provide references to release notes, mailing list discussions, etc. to support your answers.

Dear friends of #BSDCafe and the #Fediverse, I've been quite busy these past few days and haven't had much time to dedicate to the BSD Cafe. In the upcoming days, I plan to provide an update on the current status and refresh the Wiki with the services I've added. In the meantime, though, I'm in the process of migrating an e-commerce site based on #Magento from a simple Linux setup to FreeBSD and its respective jails. I'm documenting the entire process, and the developers are pleased with the results. It will be going live soon.

Anyway, still need to figure out how to make the application name bold. I'll get there.
