Took my group down to the river to sample for #tadpoles of the Julian's and Vaillants #frogs, two species we suspect are hybridizing. A project I started in 2019 and since have sampled hundreds of tadpoles.

I developed it specifically for hot days. Play into the river and catch little pollywogs? Sign me up!

We delimit species according to denticle rows around their mouth (pictured here). So far, we have found several dozen that exhibit characteristics of both species.

All tadpoles released! 🐸

A blue bucket filled with around 50 tadpoles of various sizes. Some gravel and leaves can be seen in the center
A close up image of the tadpoles mouth in hand. Small black lines called denticle rows, surround the mouth above and below. The tadpole has a greenish-yellow color with a marbles dark pattern

saw a new frog today!! i believe this is a Green Frog despite being more of a brown frog. i guess they can be like every single color, i saw some pictures of blue ones!! pretty cool.

i really like their thin snout and orange eye and gigantic tympanum. they were just across the way from the other frog i posted earlier. just two friends hanging out under a little bridge and there was a little concrete wall i could sit on to get a good look at em. really not sure why they let me get so close to them or take their pictures for so long but i really appreciate that they did. i love frogs.

In a backyard setting, a small pond will be very beneficial to #wildlife. Here's the hand-dug bi-level pond in my garden. The upper section is shallow for animals to bathe and drink: bees, birds, bunnies. The lower section is wider (<4.5 feet) deeper (<3 feet). #Frogs in my area prefer small quiet ponds.

The special black liner can be purchased, seen here because deer, my nemesis, knocked many rocks off.

More in future toots.

Info requested by:
@dasgrueneblatt

#biodiversity #gardening

A bi-level pond is shown. In the foreground is a shallow pond, roughly circular, perhaps four feet in diameter. It is surrounded by light colored stones. Beyond that and lower is a deeper pond no more than 4 1/2 feet wide and less than three feet deep. It is also surrounded by decorative light-colored stones that are larger. Behind the pond are canna lilies and there is a note that says they are for frog hiding. To the right in the larger pond there are water plants growing from the pond. There is a note there that says these water plants are for dragonflies to exit. At the bottom of the photo can be seen clover adjacent to the shallow pond and there is a note that says "clover lawn". In the shallow pond there is a reflection of trees that are not seen in the picture.

#Toads nab their prey 5 times faster than the blink of an eye. How do they do it? They pop their lower jaw open, and launch their supersoft tongue at their meal, enveloping their prey. When their unique saliva hits prey at a high speed, it thins out dramatically, pouring into every nook and cranny the tongue touches. Then it becomes sticky again, drawing that meal down the hatch.”

"The Izecksohn’s Brazilian treefrog might be the world’s first known pollinating amphibian. On an expedition near Armação dos Búzios, researchers observed the species eating nectar from the milk fruit tree — a messy endeavour that causes pollen to stick to the moist skin on the frog’s back, where it might be transferred to another flower."

So... #tumblr has gone and added singing #frogs to its website. Cool. Cool.

#music #LeanOnMe

a screencast of me "playing" some of the starting chords of the first verse to "Lean on Me" via the number keys on my keyboard (one through eight) on Tumblr's website. Each number key corresponds to a note and a little frog at the top of the dashboard that perks up and "croaks" said note. In the video, you can see the frogs jump up (kinda sorta) in unison as I "play."

Weeding uncovers a Fowler's Toad, common in this area. And they are always welcome!

Frogs consume large amounts of pests, not the least of which are mosquitos. By their habitat destruction and chemical use, humans kill off frog populations, then complain about mosquitoes.

This garden has a purpose-built pond for frog breeding and tadpole development. A small price to pay for 24X7 mosquito control.

Tiiiiiny green tree frog

These shots took a lot of effort in post to rescue something vaguely worth posting, since they were shot in low light on an iPhone 3GS (and with the usual handicap of two dogs on the leash). However I thought the frog was so cute is was worth a post. In the first shot is my usual measuring stick, the ISO Standard Left Leg. The frog appears to be about 1,000 little millitoes long.
