Although, for geographic and climatic reasons, we no longer grow the roses we once did there is one species of rose that we would/will always find a space for. The small flowers only last about a week and, sadly, are easily damaged by rain or wind but they are a light while they are here and for the rest of the summer we enjoy the red-tinged leaves.

Red and Green Currents in Blue Bowl - a blue bowl filled with fresh red and green currents still attached to thier stems. The lime green stems create a beautiful contrast with the red and blue colors.

We have to pick the red currents the moment they turn red or the birds will eat them all. They are a rare treat for all of us since currents are rarely found at the local farm stands and stores. Red currents are so beautiful, nutritional and delicious.

The latin name for red currents is Ribes rubrum. Red currents are widely cultivated but can also be found in the wild. I photographed the currents at birds-eye view to allow the blue of the bowl to fill the hole frame and for contrast in colors. In Trowbridge, Wiltshire, an orchard has been planted in a cemetery. The Friends of Down Cemetery helped organise the process, raising funds and planting the trees. Even a local woodturning club made the dedicatory plaque. It might not be 700k trees, but every local project adds up and I think it's particularly nice that they've thought about planting fruit trees that the public will be able to access for food.

I counted at least six flower buds on my 3yo black sapote when the 1st fruit hasn’t even ripened. 🙈 This tree sets fruit by apomixis, very unusual for Diospyros nigra.

In other news Bunnytrix Hopper has jilted me for my neighbor’s lawn. Are my weeds not good enough anymore? 😭 There is no satisfying these rabbits.

You know the fruit is ready to pick when the calyx has lifted off the fruit and it hasn’t done so yet.

I'm prompted to post this by @Snarkypeds's post of some waffles with strawberries. They looked delicious, and this is too. It's the best thing I know to do with fresh fruit. It's a simple 2-layer yellow cake. The egg whites are reserved to make meringues atop each layer, & the meringues themselves are topped with nuts. 1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup sugar
3 egg yolks
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup milk
1 1/4 cups sifted cake flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
MERINGUE TOPPING
3 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice or 1/4
teaspoon cream of tartar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped walnuts, almonds,
pecans, or filberts
TOPPING
2 or 3 cups sliced fresh or frozen fruit,
sliced strawberries, or whole
raspberries
1/2 to 1 cup whipping cream

One of the best cakes for accommodating fresh or frozen fruits, such as peaches, apricots, strawberries, or raspberries.
Cream the butter, then cream in the sugar until very light. Beat in the egg yolks and vanilla. Add the milk alternately with the sifted dry ingredients. This will make a stiff batter. Spread in two greased and floured 8-inch cake pans. It will make a thin layer. Beat the egg whites until frothy. Add the lemon juice or cream of tartar. Slowly beat in the sugar and beat until well blended and stiff and the sugar is dissolved. Spread in swirls on the cake batter. Sprinkle with nuts and bake in a 350-degree oven 30 to 35 minutes, or until the cake shrinks from sides of pan. Remove to a rack. When cool, loosen the cake from one pan and turn meringue side down on a plate. Sprinkle with fruit and dot with whipped cream. Put on the other layer meringue side up. Decorate the top with spoonfuls of whipped cream and garnish the center with fruit.

One of the lemons from the lemon tree at my house.

The outside looks beat up, but the inside is delicious. I usually use these with diet soda and rice, flavouring both a ton. Any of y'all have a lemon tree? Any advice for maintenance?

I thought these were oranges on the outside, with their, well, orange looking skin.

"In 1979, I had persuaded the South Melbourne council to plant fruit trees in public places. The old Scots city engineer who agreed to do this remembered that in his training courses he had been told never to plant useful trees in public places. 'We accepted that as law, he mused, 'and now I wonder why?'. That evening, we set out twenty or so fruit trees at the entrance to the council chambers. Next day, they had all been dug out and removed; stolen.
'Good,' says I.
'How's that?' says the engineer.
'We don't have to plant, water, or tend them now.'
This made so much sense, we were able to lose a few thousand trees in one season, just by putting out the pots near empty holes (they were easier to steal, and in better condition). In time the thefts tapered off, and we could safely plant some ourselves. But by then, the whole suburb was planted and we could see trees over hundreds of fences. A very cheap way to plant and rear trees, we thought. It saved the council hundreds of dollars and I still sometimes think of patenting the system for public savings. I call it 'encouraging creative theft' (E.C.T.)."

@JagCesar Great! I’m super behind on knowledge about intents so I have no idea what you said there.

As a little assignment why don’t you make yourself a fruit tracker shortcut? You make a predefined list of fruits that you eat, then when you run the shortcut you select the fruit you had and it adds it to a calendar at the current time and date, with the tag #fruit in the event’s notes field. It then launches your Calendar app to show that it saved it.
