The final vote was 214 to 212 against the rule to allow the military spending measure to proceed. All #Democrats voted against it, given their opposition to the #funding levels in the bill & numerous other provisions added by #Republicans who say they need to eliminate a “#woke” mentality from the #military.
#HouseRepublicans’ inability to find agreement on even a #stopgap #funding bill that is destined to fail in the #Senate again puts into focus the challenge before #KevinMcCarthy as he tries to unite his party & avoid a #GovernmentShutdown. Though #Republicans largely agree on the need to significantly curb federal spending, divisions mostly over process have given any 5 lawmakers enormous #power in the razor-thin majority.

Much cheaper to give them the dole or some sort of UBI while they're establishing themselves than the untold billions governments spend on sport, training facilities, and chasing gold medals. The contours of a possible deal mirror what #McCarthy & leadership aides had telegraphed earlier in the wk as one route to keep the government funded for a short time: an extension of current fiscal levels for 1 month that includes funding for #DisasterRelief & #border #security. Specifically, #Republicans want to tack on the border security package they passed earlier this year, but w/o controversial provisions on #EVerify…. That route also would allow the blocked #DOD #funding bill to advance.
…While #McCarthy is the target of some lawmakers’ ire, others in the conference are working to find compromise & beginning to trade paper on what a potential deal could look like on a short-term #funding bill, known as a continuing resolution, that would keep the govt funded at current fiscal levels & avert a #shutdown.
