A quick view of Supernova 2023ixf that’s located in the Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) in the norther night sky. The cloud cover has been a near constant here (May Gray as they call it in Los Angeles), so as soon as they parted long enough I dragged out the telescope and did what I could.

Following up on yesterday's post, I've got another region of space even more jam-packed with galaxies: Markarian's Chain. Everywhere you look in this image, there's a galaxy. Some large, some tiny, some glowing blobs, some spirals, some truly strange. I'm not generally a fan of starless astro images, but taking the stars out emphasizes just how many galaxies are in frame.

Claims of the Big Bang's death are wildly exaggerated, JWST has shown nothing extremely unusual, early wild claims were based on outdated estimates of decades-old computing. Some discoveries are interesting, will be noteworthy, and some numbers are off, but the spectacular has once again won over the hearts and minds of wild at heart surrogate SciFi writers employed at news orgs.

Screen recording of an interactive — Forms of Light: The Phantom Galaxy, Young Stars, Old Stars, Dead Stars, Gas, and Dust. At center are a series of images that show different views of a spiral galaxy. On the bottom of the image are several slider stops: Mid-infrared, Visible, Ultraviolet, X-ray and multi-wavelength. As you step through the stops, the image changes.

The galaxy is shown face-on, with the core of the galaxy in the center of the image and the two galaxy arms winding out counter-clockwise from the core toward the edges of the image. The view of the galaxy is cropped such that portions of each arm are cut off and the outermost regions of the galaxy are out of view. Two dotted lines trace the spiral arms, and labels point out important features in each view.

A black, deep space image is dominated by a large central object. This object resembles a snowflake-like feature with a bright white core and 8 pinkish orange spikes. It is surrounded by additional wisps of pinkish orange and blue gas. In reality, this “snowflake” is actually two colliding galaxies with merging cores. The brilliant light from the star formation surrounding these cores creates diffraction spikes, an optical effect that occurs when bright light interacts with a telescope’s optics. The background is punctuated with scattered red, white and orange galaxies of various shapes and sizes.

The elliptical galaxy M87 looks like a fizzy oval with a jet. But what is its actual 3D shape?

Following the motion of stars around the center of M87, like a swarm of 100 billion bees, researchers found the galaxy is potato-shaped.

This new model gives us the net rotation of stars in M87 and a more precise mass of the central black hole. With data from the Event Horizon Telescope, we can also constrain the black hole’s spin.

The image is labeled “Hubble photo of M87.” On the right is an egg-shaped grid of lines whose long axis is oriented from lower left to upper right. There is nothing like this ball of stars in our Milky Way Galaxy.

The #star cluster NGC 1850's size and shape are reminiscent of the many ancient globular star clusters which roam our #galaxy's halo. But the stars are all too young, making it a type of star cluster with no known counterpart.

NGC 1850 is also a double star cluster, with a second, compact cluster of stars visible here just to the right of the large cluster's center.

This video highlights a few intriguing objects in the recently released #JWST image of Pandora’s Cluster (Abell 2744), a region where multiple clusters of galaxies are in the process of merging to form a megacluster.

There are over 50,000 sources of near-infrared light in this image, so it was hard to choose what to feature. Zoom in and explore the full image on your own here: https://webbtelescope.org/resource-gallery/images/zoomable-pandoras-cluster

Video that highlights several areas of the larger Pandora's cluster image. A crowded galaxy field on a black background, with one large star dominating the image just right of center. Three areas are concentrated with larger white hazy blobs on the left, lower right, and upper right above the single star. Scattered between these areas are many smaller sources of light; some also have a hazy white glow, while many other are red or orange. Even without zooming in, different galaxy shapes are detectable, like spirals, ovals, and arcs.

#JWST has four different science instruments, with different fields of view. It’s possible to use two of the instruments in parallel, as was done in this observation. While NIRISS (the Near-InfraRed Imager and Slitless Spectrograph) observed the white dwarf WD1657+343, NIRCam (the Near-InfraRed Camera) captured this bonus image filled with galaxies, including the two large spirals at the bottom. Neat!

Many stars and galaxies lie on a dark background, in a variety of colours but mostly shades of orange. Some galaxies are large enough to make out spiral arms. Along the bottom of the frame is a large, detailed spiral galaxy seen at an oblique angle, with another galaxy about one-quarter the size just beneath it. Both have a brightly glowing core, and areas of star formation which light up their spiral arms.

Samsung: Yo! I heard you like software bloat. So, added more software bloat on top of our software bloat!

Bloatware pushes the Galaxy S23 Android OS to an incredible 60GB: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/02/the-samsung-galaxy-s23s-bloated-android-build-somehow-uses-60gb-of-storage/

Do you know what a #GalacticYear is? 🌌
It's time the #Sun takes to orbit once around the center of the #MilkyWay #Galaxy.
We move 230 km every second in orbit around the center. So it takes 230 mln years to complete 1 Galactic Year at this rate.

This #HubbleFriday image features the #galaxy LEDA 48062 in the constellation Perseus. LEDA 48062 is the faint, sparse, amorphous galaxy on the right side of the image, and it is accompanied by a more sharply defined neighbor on the left – the large, disk-like lenticular galaxy UGC 8603. LEDA 48062 is only around 30 million light-years away.

A faint, scattered collection of cool stars in the form of an irregular galaxy lies right of center. A disc-shaped galaxy viewed nearly edge-on lies to the left, surrounded by a wide glow. Several smaller galaxies in various orientations cluster around the two. The background is black and mostly empty.

The most massive young #star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud NGC 346, embedded in the #galaxy's largest star forming region.

The massive stars of NGC 346 are short lived, but very energetic. Their winds and radiation sculpt the edges of the region's dusty molecular cloud triggering star-formation within.

The star forming region also appears to contain a large population of infant stars, a mere 3 to 5 million years old and not yet burning hydrogen in their cores.
