"XP for Reported Treasure" – is a thing I will try out soon when I run Village of Hommlet in Blueholme (Holmes D&D).

Spend a turn (10mins) to inventory/sketch treasure in situ, then tell people about it when you return to town in exchange for experience points.

Treasure you bring back with you is just treasure.

This feels like it should work fine. I'll report back on how it goes.

The day-night cycle is pretty simple in Ebb. Smooth change of ambient light + directional light intensity (if the scene has any).

Yesterday, I started work on a untitled witch game, made in Scratch.

Inspired directly by that old Star Trek mainframe game, I decided to go with a witchy/wiccan theme, using the provided and pretty assets. I've wanted to make a game with this theme for a while, so I'm glad I'm getting some work done on it!

It's VERY early, so nothing even remotely fancy yet, but I like that I've got some basics down.

Also, Nick Yee wrote an excellent article on how different genders have different motivations. I feel that as more genders with a more diverse cultural conditioning is taking up the aging space, the ore critical it becomes that these categories are not blindly applied. We'll just end up with a bunch of games designed for predominantly male players, with less targeted options for other genders. #gamedev #indiedev #gamedesign #gender

Anyone else find it problematic that the #UnifiedModel of play styles only references categories that are older than 2005? Granted, Nicole Lazarro is a woman, but in 2005 I was the only woman I knew that was a hardcore gamer.

I kind of feel that cultural conditioning of preference in the male domain influenced all the categories. I don't see myself in any of them.

There are plenty of engine builders out there, where typically you get your engine up and running and then get to turn the crank once or twice before the game ends.

What if, instead, we had an engine maintainer?

Your economic engine would be up and running at the beginning of the game. The task is to maintain it by:

Repairing or replacing components that wear out over time

Performing preventive maintenance to prevent wear

Fine-tuning the engine’s efficiency

Adapting the engine to a (relatively slowly) changing environment

Occasionally recognizing that an entire multi-component part of your engine needs to be replaced. You’d want to cannibalize what you can to both avoid the expense of buying new things and the cost of disposing of waste; limited space means you do have to get rid of your waste.

Thoughts? Does it already exist?

I've been mulling this morning on a phenomenon I've seen in game design:

Designers with little experience in the subject of their design often make games that, while fun, can make it harder for the people who know something about the subject to suspend disbelief.

Conversely, people making games about their area of expertise can fall into the trap of over-simulating and making an accurately detailed game that isn't much fun to play.

Balancing the two takes a lot of skill!

Has anyone ever calculated something like "batting average" for commercial #GameDevelopers? Mobygames plus metacritic should contain the data to know who had worked on the highest rated games over time, yeah?

Thinking about the "spikiness" we see in the careers of Big Names who get one hit and go on to produce a series of failures -- reflecting a core misunderstanding of how game development works. The names in such an analysis might be surprising.
