There are many more insects, birds and especially swallowtail butterflies this year. I'm not sure if it's a good sign or not. I am always suspicious of these things, thinking maybe the heat is pushing species farther north. The end of May and so far in June, it feels like late July with the heat. Anyway, I am enjoying these beautiful creatures that flutter in my yard by the dozens.

Made really good progress today! Dug up as much of the invasive sumac that was in the garden as humanly possible. Got down in the dirt almost two feet to retrieve as much of the root system as possible :blobcatfearful: Really hoping we did enough damage it won't be pushing the newly-planted lilac bush out in a year ๐Ÿ˜’

Anyway, most of the front is done! Just want to get a tiny wee fence tmto protect the seedum alongside the sidewalk, finish clearing the weeds in the back corner, clean up our rosemary bush, and transplant the lamb's ear we discovered growing along the fence. But all the babies are planted, mulched, and kissed by me! :ablobcathappypaws:

#Gardening
#Springtime

The rmfront garden, finally free of the sumac tree someone had clearly planted in some bygone year. In it's stead is a small lilac bush, about a foot tall. Towards the front of the garden are W two small lilac bush babies and one tickseed baby. The soil is dark and moist, and the plants are vibrant green.
The garden that hugs our fence. In the foreground are two small creeping thyme babies, resting next to the circular bed containing the tomato plant baby. Beyond that are another four creeping thymes. And finally, in the background, is the circular bed with the purple sumac baby. All of the wee ones are mulched. And behind the garden are three bushes that still need a little tending to
A shot of the hole we had to dig to unearth the sumac's roots. The hole here is about half as deep as we ended up digging. Visible is one of what was about three large roots, roughly an inch and a half in diameter, that each burrowed into the ground going different directions. My best friend steps into a gardening shovel, about to deepen the hole and hopefully free the root (if only it had been so easy!)

#NandinaDomestica, commonly known as #nandina, heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo, is a species of flowering plant in the family Berberidaceae, native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.

This one in #Mckinnon #Australia I snapped on the weekend and itโ€™s a happy and healthy looking beauty.

It displays bright-red fruit in the cool months. Although the berries are toxic to birds, especially towards the end of the winter when other food sources become scarce. The reason the fruit is untouched and in tact.

https://plants.ces.ncsu.edu/plants/hosta-plantaginea/

Hosta plantaginea
Common Name(s):

August Lily Funkia Hosta Plantain Lily

Description

The name Hosta, honors an Austrian botanist Nicholas Host. Plantain lily is an herbaceous perennial in the Asparagaceae (asparagus) family, native to China. It grows in clumps from 1 to 3 feet high and wide.

Plantain lily thrives in sites with deep to partial shade and moist soils with good drainage and high organic matter. Locations with full sun can be a planting site in cooler climates, providing proper moisture is maintained.

Maintenance should include removing discolored leaves at ground level. After blooming has occurred, cut the stems off to encourage new plant growth.

This has got to be my fav way to grow green beans.

I have a small yard & space is at a premium. I love that I can just stick bamboo poles wherever - all I need is a small patch of soil. These are tucked around pots of small citrus trees.

As long as the poles are sunk deep enough they don't even need additional support. The beans will climb to the top, then reach over & hang on to each other.

Takes a stepstool to pick them lol, but in terms of food production, it's well worth it.

Purple-podded green beans growing up bamboo poles. The two poles are side-by-side approximately eighteen inches apart and are roughly seven feet tall. The vines have grown to the top of the poles and then reached across to each other, forming a thick cluster of green leaves at the top. Background is a dilapidated old gray fence that looks ready to collapse at any minute.

The Chelsea chop will cause the plant to rebranch. The downside is that it delays blooming, so you might want to chop only a portion. Since this can stress the plants, it should only be done to plants that have been in your garden for at least a year.

"Native plant gardens can help save you time and money, when compared with traditional gardens."

Yup, environmental reasons aside, plants that are native to your area are generally low maintenance. You don't have to keep buying plants year after year since they'll survive and come back year after year, generally.

Have you, or someone you know, ever tried growing two #tomato plants next to each other?

These are two heirlooms from Seed Savers (a wonderful nonprofit). I forget which variety, I always lose track.

I always plant two seeds per pot. It breaks my heart to end up killing one of them so I thought I'd give two plants per hole a try.

I'd guess others have tried this & it hasn't been successful otherwise it would be widely practiced.

Thoughts?
