Photos taken at the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden. Even though it was drizzling, the rain only helps to add a bit of contrast to the photos. #flowers #flowerphotography #photography #rain #gardens #gardenphotography #Dallas #Texas #travels #travelphotography #travelblog

Good morning. The large round saucer-like leaves of this orange nasturtium were the most interesting find in yesterday's lunchtime walk to check out the street planters near the office.

Have not had these before: #Geastrum , a #fungus called #Earthstar . Probably a good sign of a healthy, #biodiverse #garden - always exciting to find something new. Not sure, which variety. Maybe someone can help.
See alt text for more.

A light cream, almost white coloured fungus consisting of a bulb sat on a star shaped base called a collar on woodland type ground.
Commonly found in hardwood forests around the world. I discovered them in a shady part of the garden, where I had a leaf pile two or three years ago.
The Native American Blackfoot Confederacy called collared earthstars ka-ka-toos – meaning 'fallen stars' – and believed them to be indicators of supernatural events.
There are several varieties. Not sure, which one mine are. Diameter is around 7 cm. Maybe someone can help with #identification

#compost really good temperature still. Just turned and saw that material from this year is already nearly ready to be used for #mulching . And it still has a whole year to go before I will use it.

Cut out the #bamboo by taking the lower leaves off and took out some stems. Looks a bit radical but may have the desired effect of letting more light through.

In the centre of the photograph the yellow and green stems of a large bamboo, from which I have removed the lower leaves. The bamboo is framed by tall ornamental grasses. Some are flowering, the grass in front of the bamboo has already turned yellow. In the foreground, very close to the camera left of centre, one shoot of a second bamboo. The bits of white in the background, barely visible through the growth, belong to the greenhouse.

How fantastic is this Gazania (African Daisy or Treasure Flower). The colours are so bright and happy.

A single large bloom on its stem. The bright colours start with a golden yellow centre and multi-coloured petals of orange, red and pink at the tips. The tips of the petals have started to curl in creating an interesting shape that adds a bit of drama.

Hello. Here's another shrub I don't think I have seen before - Aeonium Succulent. 😀

There are large waxy rosettes with deep burgundy, almost black, coloured leaves coupled with tight clusters of small, bright yellow star-like flowers thst stand above the rosettes.

The large planting of several shrubs at the Botanic Gardens in Sydney really caught my eye. I was initially perplexed. 🙂 See what you think.

These vibrant red and yellow flowers really stood out in the sunshine today. I think they might be English Primrose.

The photograph shows a romantic garden densely planted with trees, shrubs, annuals and perennials. Layer upon layer, it is difficult to gauge the size of the garden. The scene is back-lit by the low evening sun. A curved, paved path is partially visible. To one side of the path is a small sculpture of a Venetian flying lion.

Just getting around to my backlog of several hundred photos which I still need to go through (!).

Here are some from around the garden that I really liked (click in because there's lots of detail to see):

* Centre of an Osteospermum flower
* Rain on the leaves of a daylily (hemerocallis)
* A feather floating in a bowl that I need to plant up
* Centre of a ligularia Britt-Marie Crawford

I've been out in the garden again with the macro lens, finding out new things about how some of my plants look close up.

Here, we've got a poppy (self-sown so no idea about what it is!), Hosta 'Purple Heart', Caryopteris 'Dark Knight', and Canna 'Pink Sunburst'.

#AltText #Macro #MacroPhotography #plants #flowers #garden #GardenPhotography #PlantPhotography #Gardening @plants #ILikeThisNewLens

Very close up shot of the head of a frilly red poppy flower. Lots of red petals criss-cross one another like ribbons of crepe paper, hiding green-purple stamens among them.

These seed themselves in our garden from...somewhere. I have no idea the variety, but close up they look quite amazing.
Close up of the leaf and stem of a hosta plant. The leaf is green with strong pale veins running through it. The main stem is covered in purple-red dots, becoming more numerous the further down you look, until the stems is almost solid purple.

This is my favourite hosta! The flower (not shown) is a pinky-purple colour.
Close up of the tiny flowers of Caryopteris. Dark purple buds burst open with a long, dark purple stigma, and pale frilly ends on the mauve petals.

They form a cluster around the stem, with several rings above one another.

I've just got this plant. It's known as a Butterfly Bush (as Buddleia is also commonly known), so hoping it'll be interesting to some butterflies here.

I love this photo. I had no idea the flowers would come out this nicely in an image - I'm really stoked about this one!
Close up of a leaf from a Canna lily. The middle stem is strong and thick, with a good red colour (sorry, I'm a little red-green colour blind so maybe it's not quite how I'm describing it???). The veins are pale, coming out in parallel to each other at an angle to the main stem.

The leaf is backlight by the sun, and between the veins, the flesh of the leaf is different colours, from reds to oranges to greens, to purples.

Cannas are lovely plants with big, soft leaves. One of my favourites...

So I bought myself a new Macro lens, and have been playing in the garden. Here are a few highlights at the moment:

Thalictrum (I think this is delavayi), Hakonechloa Macra Aureola, Catananche caerulea, and Athyrium Nipponicum (not sure of the variety, I'm afraid!).

#plants #garden #gardening #GardenPhotography #PlantPhotography #Macro #MacroPhotography @plants #OohIBoughtANewLens

Closeup of a cluster of purple flower buds of Thalictrum. In the blurry background there are a couple of open Thalictrum flowers, looking like pink and yellow insects on the wing.

Best described as a "light, airy" plant because the flowers are so small and fairly openly spread on the flower spike, the detail on each tiny flower is lovely
Strong diagonal lines created by the striped, grassy leaf blades of Hakonechloa. One blade has a flower spike open at the end.

Known as "Temple Grass", they form a thick clump, with all the leaves pointing toward the light rather than all around
The bright purple and violet flower of Catananche. The beautiful petals have 4 or 5 notches at the end, and there's a sparse ring of bright stamens around the centre.

There's another flower behind it from the same plant, which is a double form (i.e. it has twice the number of petals).

These flowers seem to glow in the late-evening light
Close up of a painted Athyrium frond. The dark red spine branches off alternately on each side to a silver and pale grey leaf. They're lovely little things - and such a change from the more common green colouration of many ferns.
