Well, I guess it's time for our #Introduction post! I'm Amethyst, co-host and face of the Gemstone System, also known simply as Gemmy. I use shey/shem pronouns and I'm a #Genderqueer #Queer dyke. :genderqueer_flag: :lesbian_flag: I like playing and making #VisualNovel, doing intermediate-level #Origami, and hanging out with my friends in VCs and IRL.

My fellow co-host is Artemis, who uses she/her pronouns and is a #Demigirl. :demigirl_flag: She's what's known in #Plurality as a little, which basically means that despite our body being an adult, she's basically a kid. I tend to keep her close to the vest to keep her safe but she's an essential part of my #GameDevelopment and #Programming journey, having offered many of her own insights and hours of labor to the cause.

There's eight identities that we know of but there may be more. Despite this, only really I and Artemis front all that often and most really only ever meet me. Even still, I like to be upfront. So that's us!

Cool History: The Public Universal Friend

In 1776, after a rough illness, a 24-year-old in Rhode Island claimed to have died. They said they were then resurrected genderless. They abandoned their birth name and pronouns, becoming, the Public Universal Friend.

Becoming a Quaker preacher, The Public Universal Friend gathered a large following and was quite influential. They opposed slavery, empowered unmarried women, welcomed black people, and encouraged peace with the Iroquois. They even founded a settlement called The Gore.

There were numerous attempts to arrest the Friend for blasphemy, but they all failed. In one incident, the women of the house drove off the invading men, tearing their clothes, and in another, the Friend escaped skillfully on horseback.

I finished reading _Gender Queer_ by Maia Kobabe. It was 2022’s most banned book. I decided to read it, after hearing how often it was banned, but not being able to find any descriptions of what the fainting-couch set objected to.

And now I know why. It’s a frank memoir of Maia’s gender confusion and awakening. The key word here isn’t “frank”, it’s “memoir”. It made me more empathetic to em and eir experiences. That’s what people are afraid of most of all: empathy for those they want to demonize and erase.
