@AllThoseBefore I think I may have knocked down a long-standing brick wall ... The DNA evidence all stacks up, but I am not yet quite satisfied that I have enough documentary evidence to be fully confident in my conclusion. It intuitively feels right, but unfortunately, intuition doesn't constitute evidence #FamilyHistory #Genealogy

Very belatedly - only tracing this since early 1980s! - spotted the 1871 Wilton Dean #census gives more accurate birthplace for my ggg-granny Margaret Cavers, Mrs Hall. Other records say Stow parish, Midlothian or Selkirkshire. This census says Fairnehirst, Midlothian i.e. farm Ferniehirst near Torwoodlee. There's no surviving record of her baptism. Her parents moved around a lot - her dad Thomas was a shepherd. Her widowed mum Helen ended up back at #Hawick. #genealogy #FamilyHistory #Scotland

What people think #genealogy is like: Grammas telling stories, and fancy charts that look like trees.

What it's actually like: Realizing that a specific Dayton, OH, yearbook (Roosevelt High 1942 or 1943) is the thing you need/want most in the world. And you're getting a little desperate for it.

It's like a scavenger hunt YOU made up! For one thing! That no one has! What fun! #history #research

65 years ago this week, my grandfather Frank Whitworth retired. He had worked for 52 years with the same company, I J & G Cooper at 7 Dale Street ("Seven Dale House") Manchester - although that included his 3 years active service in the war.

52 years working for the same organisation sounds so strange now!

Mention in the Evening Chronicle and something in the in-house magazine.

We only overlapped by a few months so I don't remember him at all.

#Genealogy #FamilyHistory #Manchester

Newspaper cutting with grainy black and white pic of two men and an armchair in an office, a group of other people behind. Article reads as follows:

EVENING CHRONICLE Wed., Oct. 1, 1958
After 52 years’ service with I J. and G. Cooper Ltd., merchants, of Dale Street, Manchester, Mr. Frank Whitworth, of Newton Heath, Manchester, retired today. He was presented with an armchair, a pressure cooker, a cheque and a bouquet of flowers for his wife. He is shown behind the chair (on left) with Mr. B. J. Walton, director and company secretary, at the presentation.
Typewritten article reads as follows:

Mr F Whitworth.

Mr. Whitworth will be retiring on Tuesday next, 30th September. He joined the Company on 30th April 1906 as a boy in the Town Room and has successfully held positions as Accounts Clerk, Counter Cashier, Invoice Room Manager and for several years past he has been responsible for discipline and output from the General Office in Manchester. : , During the 52 years he has been in the Company's employ, he has always given loyal, cheerful and efficient service to all, and has been largely responsible for the smooth working between the office and departments and branches. His knowledge of Cooper's history and evolution on the clerical side is unique; in fact, one can hardly ask him any question regarding the Company which he cannot answer. Unfortunately, during the past year he has had indifferent health but he carries with him the best wishes of all his colleagues for a speedy and complete recovery, so that he and Mrs. Whitworth may enjoy a long and happy period of retirement.

My great x4 grandfather's baptism record. Nathaniel Taylor, 1st August 1784, at All Saints #NewtonHeath #Manchester.

Interesting that his father (my g5gf) Samuel's occupation is given as Webster - an old name for a loom operator, or weaver - although it sounds such a 21st century occupation.

Also interesting that pic 1 is from the bishop's transcript, certified as a true copy of the original (pic 2). However my g5gm's name Mary has been mis-transcribed as Margrat.

Good morning! Today I woke up still excited about a discovery I made yesterday in my family tree. I found my 2xgreat grandparents + their children on a passenger list when they immigrated from Ireland to Boston.

I know this isn't big news for anyone else, but I've worked on this for weeks. I had to learn a lot about Irish + immigration records, but I did it + I'm proud of myself. I'll be smiling all day.

Find something to smile about today, even though it's Monday.

My journey into #genealogy was inspired by my late mother Betty and her unusual maiden surname (Mum is pictured here in 1961 with her parents, Fred and Louisa #Atcherley).

I started in 2007, when I found Mum's grandparents in the 1901 #census before pushing further back into the 1800s.

Intrigued by the various Atcherleys I found I started researching them all in an attempt to work out which ones were 'mine'. This led to a #OneNameStudy (or #SurnameStudy) - hence my handle 'AtcherleyONS'.

Black and white photo of of three people standing outside the door to a house. Left to right are my late mother, holding a white handbag; her mother (wearing glasses, and looking older than she really was); and her father (wearing a suit and tie as he almost always did, but not his usual flat cap!).

Met deze tas ging hij op reis om orders binnen te halen.

If anyone can point me in any direction, to help me, thanks.

Discovered my American whaler ancestor had children with a Maori woman. He was based at Kapiti.1835-1842. Her name was Nani, their son Tamati. There was a daughter too. Their descendants will carry the blue eye gene. I don't know what happened to them. I would like to find descendants of this whanau and share stories.
Perhaps #Waikato, #Kawhia.

It's fascinating to me when a birth record has a different date on it than the headstone.

5Jul1825 In the same Ring at Knowl Hill that Baldwin defeated Cooper, Young Dutch Sam defeats Ned Stockman in 17rds & 36min. Sam Seconded by Josh Hudson & Dick Curtis, Stockman by Harry HOLT & Acton.

In the 17th Harry HOLT ended the fight out of concern for Stockman’s safety.

I’m always amused by white people who claim to have indigenous ancestry, take a DNA test, and it turns up nothing.

“These tests are obviously flawed!”

Or maybe grandma lied to you.

Thank you to everyone who has just followed me.

If I may reintroduce myself; I'm Elizabeth, a British/German citizen, writer, translator, & #history / #genealogy enthusiast.

I love discovering remarkable stories from the past, & sharing them, either in written form or (lately) as TikTok videos.

My other interests include #WW1, classic films, legal cases, & raising awareness of #GenitopatellarSyndrome, which my beloved niece has.

I look forward to getting to know you all.

Hello to anyone out there! 👋

Given the current chaos on the Bird Site, I thought I'd give Mastodon another go.

I've also changed servers to make a fresh start - and reconnect with #genealogy peeps.

I'll write more tomorrow, but in the meantime, hope you're all well.

If you need anything from #Ancestry or #Newspapers, let me know. I just uninstalled #Reddit from my phone. #genealogy

What does everyone use to store and work on their #genealogy data? As a #linux and #opensource user I have settled on Gramps https://gramps-project.org/. I use google drive to manage all of the documents that I find to support my tree.

A friend asked on social media if anyone could help them decipher some 18th century writing—it contains the birth details of one of their great-great (etc) grandparents. Top right entry only.

I'm not yet fluent in #French, so was majorly chuffed to be able to read and translate most of it!
