Hello (again) World!

I suppose it's probably about time for another #introduction since I’ve moved servers. Hi! I'm me. You know I'm me because I said so, and this is the Internet so why would I lie?

I'm a #security #generalist, currently focusing on securing client devices (your employee laptops/desktops/phones) and #ZeroTrust. I like to think I'm reasonably competent with #X509 certificates and #2fa.

Continuing to build out my Mastodon list of #web folks. If anyone wants to self-assemble around some hashtags, that’d be helpful!

If you’re here and you love the web, please say 👋

New year, new version of my #introduction - I'm a #generalist technician but primarily act as a computer #network admin for a range of organizations with a focus on security. I work with a truckload of different hardware and software vendors, and will post some of the weirder or more important stuff I come across in the field.

I would rather be a #bike mechanic any day of the week. When I'm not riding my #singlespeed or #commuter #bicycle I'm #reading about #transportation and #urbanism, #hiking, or trying to get my #kids to hike or bike with me. That or I'm boosting the latest/dumbest #dadjoke I see on here.

Unemployment sucks. And when you're not specialized in anything but more of a generalist you're not very attractive on the jobs market. I've studied plenty, but more of a breath within digital media and computer science, no specialization. Just give me a job, god damn it lol.

@bbak sometimes when you're a #generalist it's a problem. But when company need someone with wide knowledge, it's not that easy to find one.
And (lucky for me), still are companies on the market which needs people like me 😉

Most companies don't need what I would call a #generalist.

What they need is a rather low amount of specialists but many that are on a 80%-level of a respective #specialist in a handful of adjacent topics, so they can work on a (business) process end-to-end.

Interested in #generalist #AI systems?

With new large network models we see more domain-general AI systems emerging that are no longer restricted to narrow tasks. #genAI #LLM

To discuss the design & evaluation of these general cognition algorithms, we are organising an #AAAI #symposium in March! We would love to bring an #interdisciplinary group together. Please consider contributing your work to our symposium!

I recommend to exclude the flawed term #generalist and the overly vague term #specialist from your vocabulary!

@Alikufogo thank you for sharing the full quote. Before I retired from engineering the term 'generalist' was included in my CV on the recommendation of a professional CV adviser. It was seen as a positive attribute.

Hello! We never did a proper #introduction.

We're an #OpenSource and #NonProfit #research, #design and #development organisation, based in #Cornwall and #Sheffield in the UK. We actually care about stuff, and mostly work on #environment, #climate and #social projects.

We're all a bit #generalist, and many of our projects are rooted in rural issues, rather than being city-centric. Always open to collabs.

Most of us are on here: @nebogeo @amberfirefly @yaxu @cassandreces and @kanderson_rs

Grid of 6 photos of people, including Dave Griffiths (director), Amber Griffiths (director), Alex McLean (Research Fellow), Julieta Arancio (Non-executive director), Jane Sutherland (Non-executive director), and Karen Anderson (Non-executive director). Everyone is smiling, at least a little bit, some look kind of quizzical.

Various features of #parasites and #hosts may influence the #likelihood of #evolutionary transitions of parasites between #freshwater and #marine environments and vice versa. These include: parasite location (endoparasitism > ectoparasitism); #life cycle #complexity (simple > complex); host #specificity (#generalist > #specialist); transmission mode (#trophic > #environmental) https://doi.org/10.1093/icb/icac050 #EvolutionaryBiology #Paleobiology #Paleontology

Graphic showing the inherent features of parasites and hosts that may influence likelihood of transitions from freshwater to marine environments or vice versa (from left to right, up to down): parasite location (endo > ecto); life cycle complexity (simple > complex); host specificity (generalist > specialist); transmission mode (trophic > environmental). Parasites denoted as small circles; larger symbols = hosts. Thickness of arrows denotes likelihood of achieving transition.

I see people providing an #introduction to themselves here. That doesn't fit my mentality, but I'll force myself through it anyways. See? I like you people, mostly... I think.
I'm a full stack electromancer. I enjoy talking about anything from the silicon physics level up to modern computer science topics. In my more recent life I've adopted a #devops role professionally and continue to be a #technology #generalist.
I enjoy #worldbuilding and running #dnd campaigns for friends.

They used to call folks like me #renaissance man, but this has shifted to #polymath, and then even further simplified to #generalist.

In simple terms, it means I'm "into a lot of stuff," which results in me posting varied things, 90% of which you won't be interested in.

This is why #hashtags are SO important here - more important than "follows." Fill your feed with a hashtag #search that bring you joy, so you're seeing what you want MOST of the time.

Post account move #Introduction

I'm Ben - I was at @bentasker but have now moved to @ben

I'm a #techie and a #generalist. I do best when I'm tearing stuff apart to work out how to fix (or break) it. I occasionally write about #infosec as a result.

I write at bentasker.co.uk about various topics, gradually building up an archive of #documentation covering a range of things, but mostly around #Linux and #software development

Alleged Cyber Pathogen

Hello, World!

I suppose it's probably about time for my #introduction. Hi! I'm me. You know I'm me because I have a verified check beside my name, which is serious business. I had to prove I'm a cyber pathogen, but not that lying-dormant cyber pathogen (https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/mar/04/san-bernardino-da-baffles-security-community-lying-dormant-cyber-pathogen-iphone). Which is really hard when still no one knows what a cyber pathogen even is!

I'm a #security #generalist, currently focusing on securing client devices (your employee laptops/desktops/phones) and #zerotrust. I like to think I'm reasonably competent with #X509 certificates and #2fa. A major interest of mine is the #UX of security, applying/adding security with minimal disruption, and trying to communicate security so the average person can understand.

I'm at home with #Fedora and other RHEL-based distros, but I'm also good with macOS and #OpenBSD and I even have a decent idea of what I'm doing with Windows.

I'm #autistic and #adhd, so I tend to see things differently and I have an easier time seeing the entire system and how things flow through the system. Of course, a lot of times that's closely followed by "oh look a squirrel". I have mild face blindness and #aphantasia, so don't expect me to be able to visualize something and if I walk past you in the street I honestly didn't recognize you.

A quick #introduction

I'm a #generalist - a shy extrovert (yes we exist). I'm into a lot of things.

I'm hoping this platform has more grass roots #diy stuff than the others. I would love to learn some new interesting things.

I skipped writing an #Introduction whilst getting up and running, but correcting that now.

I'm Ben - I'm a #techie & a #generalist. I'm best at tearing stuff apart to figure out how it works (and by extension how to fix/break it), which leads me down various rabbit holes including #infosec ones.

I write at bentasker.co.uk & have been building a #Documentation archive for a little over a decade, covering #linux, #programming and some other stuff
