🚩 "SAG-AFTRA Members Approve Theatrical / TV Contracts" (Dec. 5)
"Dear SAG-AFTRA Members:
Today we close out one of the most important chapters in recent entertainment industry history. The 2023 TV/Theatrical Contracts have officially been ratified by SAG-AFTRA members by a vote of 78.33% to 21.67% with a turnout of 38.15%. (1/8)"

#pikaso #generativeai #abstract
“What we are going to see, in the fullness of time, I promise you, is that #Gemini is more or less in the same ball park as #GPT4, handy for a bunch of things, but untethered in reality, still with dicey, unpredictable reasoning, and a very limited understanding of the world. Don’t let the PR fool you”
I feel like there’s an allegory that exists or even a biological analog to what big tech is doing with generative AI right now, cannibalizing the creations of real humans and producing addictive junk to be consumed by other humans. All of which will ultimately drive groups of creative people underground and in hiding.
This is pretty close to what I used to get. But now I have more control, since I've put it into ComfyUI workflow. I need to learn inpainting, img2img and other stuff that may help me fix all the problems I've been facing so far and could not fix.

To no one's surprise, turns out the #GoogleGemini demo was faked.
The long video showing the system proactively responding to a video feed was in fact a series of carefully selected prompts in text + static images.
The video (featuring the system talking about ducks and magic tricks) was, as best, inspired by the answers and 100% staged.
As Marc Andreessen fights AI regulations and touts the amazing future it will create, his venture firm a16z is investing in a company that knowingly allows users to generate images that “could be categorized as child pornography.”

Will we look back on the 2020s as the time that AI made web pages obsolete and when Google chose to not even use hyperlinks anymore? God I hope not, but it is in play with #generativeAI. The extract linked is not actually about AI, but from web historian @GIFmodel writing about the “my to me” transition over past 25 years on the Web. ref: https://interfacecritique.net/book/olia-lialina-from-my-to-me/
AI creativity has come a long way in recent years, but there's still something missing.
I really enjoyed this paper (https://sci-hub.st/10.1016/S0004-3702(98)00055-1) that explores what "creativity" really is, examples of artificial creativity in computers, and the gap between us and them.
The fun part is it was written in 1998. It's fascinating to compare LLMs to the examples Boden cites, to see how far we've come and how far we have left to go. The creativity framework she provides is super useful for doing this.
In particular, we still haven't made much progress in getting AI to understand what humans value, and how to use that to assess and refine its own work (hence iterative prompt engineering). There's also still a huge problem with depending on human curation. That's less obvious now that LLMs are just scooping up vast quantities of text instead of carefully curated datasets, but it's still happening behind the scenes (often with terrible worker conditions).

I just finished writing this article. I think many are underestimating just how impactful this SAG-AFTRA tentative agreement can be: https://bit.ly/DominionOverTheMachines
My take is that we need to start thinking about #DataTrusts - where #data is kept in trust and released only for the purposes approved by data owners - and which could facilitate payment for that data ...
#SoftwareDevelopment #Programming #AI #GenerativeAI #ChatGPT #Automation: "Computing is not yet overcome. GPT-4 is impressive, but a layperson can’t wield it the way a programmer can. I still feel secure in my profession. In fact, I feel somewhat more secure than before. As software gets easier to make, it’ll proliferate; programmers will be tasked with its design, its configuration, and its maintenance. And though I’ve always found the fiddly parts of programming the most calming, and the most essential, I’m not especially good at them. I’ve failed many classic coding interview tests of the kind you find at Big Tech companies. The thing I’m relatively good at is knowing what’s worth building, what users like, how to communicate both technically and humanely. A friend of mine has called this A.I. moment “the revenge of the so-so programmer.” As coding per se begins to matter less, maybe softer skills will shine."
I made this image for an article I’m writing called “Dominion Over the Machines” about how the SAG-AFTRA AI precedents (if ratified) may move things forward not just for actors, but for every human that may face non-humans doing their work.
Interesting times we’re in.

Sometimes I'm called upon to teach a writing intensive capstone class where the main assignment has been a review paper. Given #GenerativeAI, I've been wondering what to do differently. Helping students improve their writing is totally different now...that's all I know.
I found this article [but after reading it I don't think it's all that useful]:
The role of ChatGPT in scientific communication: writing better scientific review articles
@emilymbender Thank you so much for this brilliant thread about #OpenAI and #AIHype ⬆️ that I want to recommend warmly to all #journalists and #media, but also to people in #education. Interesting links, f.e. the connection of these #billionaires to fascistoid #eugenic ideologies!
A big #followFriday from me, your work is so enriching!
A group of researchers managed to get both Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion and OpenAI’s DALL-E 2 text-to-image models to disregard their policies and create images of naked people, dismembered bodies, and other violent and sexual scenarios.
Their work, which they will present at the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy in May next year, shines a light on how easy it is to force generative AI models into disregarding their own guardrails and policies, known as “jailbreaking.” It also demonstrates how difficult it is to prevent these models from generating such content, as it’s included in the vast troves of data they’ve been trained on, says Zico Kolter, an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University. He demonstrated a similar form of jailbreaking on ChatGPT earlier this year but was not involved in this research."
I fell into an alternative Stable Diffusion hole and I can’t have enough.
AI image generation software that is open source, with hundreds of users creating models for it. Comes with enough options to require a whole new chapter in my wiki. Oh, and it’s free. #AI #aiart #generativeAI

"OSS models and Google models in LangSmith Playground for FREE
"Want to experiment with new models easily? No need for an API key! We've partnered with fireworks.ai and #GoogleAI to give you access to both OSS and Google models such as Mistral-7b, LLaMA2-70b or Bison-based foundational models for FREE" - #LangChain on Twitter
Maybe eyeing folks who, um, are more interested in LLM options than they were a week ago
Anthropic ups the ante on LLM context windows with Claude 2.1's 200K. But what does that really mean? Also, the new model offers beta tools and improved accuracy, the company says. https://www.computerworld.com/article/3711280/anthropics-claude-21-llm-turbocharges-performance-offers-beta-tool-use.html

Smart move by #Microsoft , you offer a free course on Generative AI but ofcourse while doing it you are fully embedding yourself in their ecosystem. Google and Amazon try the same with their offerings. But do you have a choice i am wondering, how do we prevent lock-ins with AI ? 🤔

My partner (who is not a "techbro") uses #ChatGPT to do their job.
So, I simply can not agree with you when you say #LLMs are useless.
Maybe they don't have a use for you, right now, but they do and will make lots of other people's lives better.
Tilt at the windmill if you must.
