My favorite ways to frame some of the most interesting (counterintuitive) facts about high #dimensional #geometry.

1. Cubes are Caltrops. (yes, #dnd reference)
2. Spheres are tops. (the tops you spin, thin on both ends, fat in the middle)
3. Mangoes > Oranges (but only in high dimensions, in 3D I prefer oranges)
4. Orthogonality (I don't have a catchy way of saying this. Upstanding vectors?)
5. Orthogonal everywhere (when dimensions are #infinite)
6. Unit sphere vectors are tiny (their coordinates are mostly very small; yes I know the statement as is, is wrong)

Caltrops is simply a consequence of my (everyone's?) favorite theorem about right angled triangles: #Pythagoras theorem.

Consider the unit cube in 𝑛 dimensional space. The circumradius, via repeated application of Pythagoras, is equal to √𝑛. On the other hand, the inradius is fixed at 1/2.

This gives rise to the pointy cubes visual for high dimensions. The vertices/corners of the unit cube will shoot out compared to the unit circle, despite the faces of the cube staying close.

I've also heard this referred to as "cubes in high dimensions are sea urchins." I like both names, but caltrop is just a fun word to say.

The remaining facts are consequences of exponential decay, which I'll go through in the next post in this thread.

My best lessons are often those where I go completely off plan. Today a lesson on pythagoras turned into an investigation into areas of polygons! The students constructed squares, equilateral triangles, hexagons and semi-circles with side / diameter lengths of pythagorean triples and were then really excited to match them up to make right-angled triangles.

Having a bit of a #maths day trying to work out how to uncross self intersecting shapes for #inkscape's shape builder tool. The problem is, these enclosed shapes sometimes go forwards and sometimes go backwards and i can tell what i have is a chain which switches at each crossing.

On sait que nos amis Japonais sont très forts en Origami (l'art du pliage du papier), mais je trouve que celui-ci, fait à la main, tangente la géométrie parfaite!

Chose incroyable : il a été réalisé par un élève japonais, qui paraît-il s'ennuyait à cause des vacances scolaires, et qui a passé un total de 20 heures pour réaliser cet origami (dixit son père) !

back to evening dev with a nice little problem: how to create a tunnel made of undeformed objects. majority of the roads examples using splines allows a certain distortion of the mesh. this one is trying it's best to avoid overlaps of parts.
next steps: filling the gaps if possible (rotations will make it a lot harder to solve) & animation ;)

Since some of you've asked privately, here's a wireframe (and generation code) of the underlying _single_ disc geometry used for drawing all of these shapes (each shape in the final composition is a #WebGL instance of that raw disc mesh). Originally, I've just used a triangle fan with a single vertex in the center, but that setup obviously (in hindsight!) doesn't play nice with deforming a disc in the extreme (and extremely concave) ways done here... So the trick was to create a lot more internal points, almost treating this shape as a solid (rather than a boundary representation). FWIW I'm actually using double the internal density since even with the one shown here, there're still some noticeable visual artifacts...

So I couldn't stop myself and just recreated the sim using https://thi.ng/geom & https://thi.ng/vectors. Also added support for adjustable gaps... The key parts are now <20 lines of code in total. The maths for 3D require no further changes, so from here to a proper 3D #WebGL version should be fairly trivial...
