Researchers have combined tagging technology, satellite data and machine learning to create a model that predicts the potential locations of unknown populations of reticulated giraffes in Africa.

The model also predicts suitable habitats where giraffes could be moved to for conservation purposes.

For animal & book lovers - just read a great novel based on true story of 2 depression era African Giraffes who survived a hurricane & were driven cross country to reach San Diego Zoo in a rigged up pick up truck. Depression weary Americans were captivated. It details the connection the young man who later wrote his story down-- connection he had w/ those magnificent gentle animals. West With Giraffes--Lynda Rutledge.

The ‘horns’ on a giraffe’s head are actually bony protrusions called ossicones, just like those of rhinos, Male #giraffes use them to fights with other males over territory and mating rights. 🦒 #WorldGiraffeDay

Well this is pretty sad! They say giraffes are a species undergoing 'silent extinction' and most people don't realize how important their conservation is. Breaks my heart.

Giraffes are the tallest animals on Earth and the smartest ones with relatively small brains. A new study shows that giraffes can use statistical reasoning to find food and avoid predators. They can infer the location of hidden objects based on the distribution of visible cues.

#Giraffes, despite a relatively small #brain, can handle #statistics
This sort of behavior has previously only been seen in #primates and #parrots.
Based on three experiments, it seemed the giraffes recognized that the ratio between two vegetables dictated the #probability of getting the snack that they wanted. And they did so immediately, without needing a few rounds of experimentation to figure it out.

#Didyouknow (animal sect)

#Giraffes are the only quadrupeds that walk by moving both legs on the same side of their body together, so next time you see one, just watch how they move.

Unlike Lions, Giraffes only need 5 to 30 minutes of sleep in a 24-hour period.
Tembea #Africa

did you know that #giraffes are osteophages?

#bones are rich in phosphorus, which is hard to come by on the savanna, and giraffes need lots of phosphorus to grow their own bones big and strong! (giraffes are just full of bones)

they also eat horns, antlers, and ivory, so nothing is off limits #BonePosting ☠️
