One of my favorite American goldfinch photos. I took this one year ago today while exploring a meadow that had a lot of bird activity.

I gave it an autumn feel in post processing using a preset in Lightroom.

Two Goldfinches perched on a Creeping Thistle plant which is surrounded by more Thistles. There are many fluffy seed heads, and that's what has attracted these seed-eating finches. The adult Goldfinch has their back to us but their head turned to one side; the head is white with some black markings and crimson patch on the front, above and below the eyes. The upper and middle parts of the back are a brownish colour, with black added by the lower parts of the wings - the wings also have a long bar of yellow - not quite gold but close enough to give this species its name I guess! The juvenile has their front towards us. They lack the adult's colours on the head and their chest and belly are mottled, but the yellow wing bar is there.

Once again.
When we sit quietly in the garden, American Goldfinches land on a nearby tree.
Yesterday, this female sat very close and relaxed next to us for a while. Later she disappeared again somewhere in the forest.

Stop staring at me.

This American goldfinch (Spinus tristis) appears to look directly and the camera. She is probably eyeing the feeders below. I took this photograph just before spring came along. One good thing about winter is that the birds are easier to see.

This is a female goldfinch perched on a small horizontal branch in an oak tree. I took the photo late winter so there are no leaves, but the tree is starting to bud. The goldfinch is directly facing the camera and appears to look straight at the camera. She is yellow but her front side is lighter that her head and neck. Her eyes are shaded and dark. The black edges of her winds are visible near her tail as is the black edges of her notched tail.

Happy Bank Holiday Monday #Mastodon (in the #UK at least)

Despite the bad weather this weekend I managed to get out with my new #Panasonic #LumixG9 camera last week and am excited to share with you one of the first photos I’ve taken.

It’s of one of my favourites - the #goldfinch.

Strangely, I walked with my new #camera to where I had previously encountered a nesting pair but they were no where to be seen. Fortunately, on my way back, I heard their recognisable #bird call from another tree. It was here that I was able to get this photo.

It was shot at ISO3200 which is a value I would go nowhere near with my previous bridge camera but I’m extremely impressed with the G9’s performance. The colours are truly striking and I love how the red face of the goldfinch matches closely to the pinecones of the #tree in the background.

Montreal is starting to come out of some hours of a mega freezing rain session (ice storm) with trees down all over and massive power outages. Meanwhile this American Goldfinch seems happy enough as he eyes up the feeders in our garden. I am told freezing rain of this severity has never been known before in April.

This goldfinch is facing the camera with its head turned slightly to its right. It's perched on a very small branch, gripping it with small pink feet. Its head is very yellow with black eyes, and a short thick beak that is brown near the head but fades to black at the end of the beak. Its inner body is white though there are shades of yellow on the sides of the breast. The tail is black and white with a deep notch on the end of the tail feathers.

This house finch appears to complain about the arrival of a goldfinch.

In this photo, a gold finch is just arriving at the corner of a wood bird feeder and is less than an inch for landing. The goldfinches yellow head is barely visible above its black wing which is pointed down to slow its descent. Its pink feet hand down ready to land. The goldfinches black and white tail is extended slightly fanned and turned outward a bit to control its landing. Just beyond the goldfinch's tail is a male house finch with his beak open as if to complain about the arrival of the goldfinch. The house finch looks on as the goldfinch lands seemingly disturbed by the new arrival. The house finch's head and neck are crimson while the rest of his body is brown. His brown feet grip the edge of the bird feeder's trough.

This immature #AmericanGoldfinch perched for some time on the clothes line and was looking quite aristocratic and regal. The juvenile Goldfinches are quite beautiful in the subtle colors of buff and brownish black plumage. I find that the fact that the #Goldfinch is one of the strictest #vegetarians in the bird world quite interesting.
