Now that Gordon Lightfoot has passed away, I wonder if the remembrance of the Edmund Fitzgerald will fade away with him.

My favorite performance of my favorite Gordon Lightfoot song, "Summer Side Of Life", from BBC concert, 1972.
This is also my favorite Gordon song to play bass on. When I get to play it I tend to go a little wilder than here. 🙂
I never formally announced my plans for weekly posting, because I’ve got a habit of doing that and then not following through very well.

@apaulagetics I have an audio "bootleg" copy of the concert.
Yes, it was amazing, he even upgraded my seating. Great final concert for his North American Tour, and the two covers he did in honor of #GordonLightfoot were amazing!
Watched more tributes to Gordon Lightfoot. If Bowie was alive that would have been a good one because they were both folkies mid-60s. #gordonlightfoot
I think Bryan makes a good point about honoring all the people who have died on the Great Lakes.

@WLDNSTAR I know right. I took my #Vinyl to #B52S in Vegas in 2916 for a poolside party at MGM. They didn't sign. Also #Kraftwerk and #GordonLightfoot and same. However, I one brought all my #IrishRovers LP's (22 of them and they signed everyone).

Lovely local history story from Orillia about Gordon Lightfoot
"The Teen Timers was formed in September of 1954 with Bill Hughes singing bass, Gord Lightfoot baritone, Terry Whelan lead and Bob Branch tenor."
It should not have taken me a week to hear about this. #RIP #GordonLightfoot (November 17, 1938 – May 1, 2023) one of the best #SingerSongwriters of all time. #IfYouCouldReadMyMind is on repeat tonight. 😔

YouTube’s algorithm got one right today. Since I’ve been viewing #gordonlightfoot videos almost exclusively for days, they served me an ad for non-stop flights from #MSP to #Saskatoon. I know Gordon was from ON, not SK, and Saskatoon isn’t at the top of my Canadian travel wishlist, but maybe it should be now?
My friend Sam wrote this blurb ages ago. We were talking about it for obvious reasons. It struck a chord, so I dug out my very old, very scratchy copy of Lightfoot to get me through an afternoon of working from home. Even through the static and fuzz from the ancient vinyl, it still resonates.

I say it like that cause he wrote the lyrics, created the music/melodies, played the guitar, was a must c live. Only once did I c him at a festival decades ago.

I just watched this fitting tribute to #GordonLightfoot. I had a 45 of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" when I was about nine-years-old, and I would play it on my one speaker little record player, over and over for hours, day after day. It still really and actually brings tears to my eyes when I hear it now, in my 50s. And it just made me well up again watching this. https://www.youtube.com/live/4Iw7Jei8XOo?feature=share
I covered Gordon Lightfoot 12 years ago for the music blog Herohill, who organized a tribute album to the legendary songwriter. Sadly, the compilation doesn't seem to be online anywhere.
I recorded "Changes", one of my favourite songs from Lightfoot's first album. At the time I didn't know it was actually written by Phil Ochs.
To me Gordon's version will always be the essential one. #music #GordonLightfoot

“It’s (The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald) a documentarian’s song, when you think about it,” said Eric Greenberg, a longtime friend of the singer who interviewed Mr. Lightfoot as a student journalist in the late 1970s and later co-wrote a song with him.

I've been a Gordon Lightfoot fan for a long time. A few years ago I made a collection of my favorite songs by him. If you're missing him today you could do worse than to look these up on YouTube or wherever else you can find them. He was one of a kind. His fan base is international. Some of these songs have been performed by dozens of other artists. I'm sorry if I left off your favorite, but do tell me what it is.

The Way I Feel ... a tender ballad on young love lost...
@mikewise I grew up in Orillia, but moved away long ago. One of my unexpected pleasures in the past several years has been to head back there in the summer for the #MariposaFolkFestival in Tudhope Park on the shores of #LakeCouchiching.
#GordonLightfoot would invariably make an effort to stop by (unannounced) and play a couple songs in the late afternoon on Saturday just as the main stage was starting to attract a bigger crowd.
He will be missed.
In my teens there were certain musical legends that you just freaking respected. It's strange maybe but there'd be just as many of us freaks in the crowd as boomers singing and dancing if they played Ottawa.
Marley was one, but gone before we came of age. Bacharach was another.
Stompin' Tom was solid punk - there'd be mosh pits at his shows.
Belafonte was one, and now we lost him and Lightfoot in one week.
Rock on Gordon, never rest.

Gordon Lightfoot has died at the age of 84.
Calling him a Canadian icon or legend is an understatement.
He was one of our greatest singer-songwriters.
Born in Orillia, Ontario on Nov. 17, 1938, he had several #1 albums & songs.
He won 16 Junos.
RIP to a legend.
